Chapter 2

After I settled into the Black Temple, I discovered that this whole business of “marrying the Evil God” was nothing like what the townspeople had described.

First of all, he didn’t eat people.

Secondly, he didn’t touch me.

To be more precise, he came every night, but he remained as restrained as a mute trying to hold his breath until he suffocated.

Every night at the stroke of midnight, a gust of wind would first rise outside the temple doors.

The candle flames would flicker out, the curtains would sway, and black mist would slowly seep from the corners of the room.

Then, that pitch-black hand would appear.

Sometimes it brought me a bowl of hot porridge.

Sometimes it carried in a basket of fruit.

Sometimes I would wake up to find the leaking roof repaired and the creaking wooden bed nailed firm.

The Black Temple was cold, but I never froze.

The Black Temple was remote, but I never went hungry.

Once, I even ran a high fever, mumbling through the night about how cold I was.

When I woke the next morning, I was wrapped in a thick layer of black mist.

It was like a living, breathing quilt.

My medicine was placed by my pillow, and even the water was kept warm.

I stared at that bowl of medicine for a long time, suddenly feeling that this “Evil God Husband” of mine acted more like a human being than my own flesh and blood.

Of course, he still refused to show his face.

I tried many times.

I feigned sleep, tried to peek, suddenly lit lamps in the middle of the night, and even intentionally smashed cups to force him to appear.

But every time I turned my head, all I saw was black mist.

The most outrageous time, I left my hair half-washed and dripping, intentionally standing before the altar with my hair draped over my shoulders to scold him.

“If you don’t come out, I’ll just assume you’re ugly and a coward.”

The black mist churned behind my back.

A second later, a warm towel hit me square on the head with pinpoint accuracy.

I was stunned for a moment, nearly laughing out loud.

“So you do understand human speech.”

He ignored me.

Only that night, while I was half-asleep, I felt someone leaning very close.

Very close.

So close that his breath seemed to brush against my ear.

A finger gently hooked a damp strand of my hair, and a cold fingertip grazed the back of my neck.

My whole body tensed up.

Yet that hand only lingered for a moment before smoothing out my hair, bit by bit.

Then he withdrew.

It felt like he was enduring something.

As if he feared that once he crossed the line, he wouldn’t be able to stop.

This so-called Evil God was so restrained it was starting to annoy me.

I even began to wonder if he simply looked down on me.

Before I could figure it out, the townspeople came knocking.

The first to arrive was my mother.

She carried a basket of eggs and a face wrinkled with a fake smile, bursting into tears the moment she stepped through the door.

“Jinxue, are you doing alright living here?”

I leaned against the doorframe and watched her performance.

“Just say what you want.”

She choked on her words, her expression faltering for a moment before she forced a smile again.

“Your younger sister’s health is weak; she needs nourishment.”

“Since you’re already the God-Bride, you should be able to ask the god for some silver, right?”

I let out a mocking laugh.

“You sold me to him, and now you want me to ask for a dowry?”

My mother’s tears vanished instantly.

“Stop talking such heartless nonsense.”

“Do you think I raised you all these years for nothing?”

Just as I was about to speak, the water vat in the courtyard suddenly cracked on its own.

With a loud bang, water spilled all over the ground.

My mother was so startled she fell back onto her rear, her face turning pale.

The black mist from the entrance slowly crawled in, stopping at her feet like a snake ready to strike.

She trembled so hard she scrambled away on all fours, not even bothering to pick up her eggs as she turned and ran.

When she reached the gate, she didn’t forget to turn back and curse me.

“You’ll end up in hell with that monster sooner or later!”

I watched her retreating figure, feeling no ripple of emotion in my heart.

However, the mass of black mist by the door seemed stung by the word “monster,” suddenly falling still.

I remained silent for a moment, then walked over and crouched down.

“She’s the one who cursed you, so why are you the one getting upset?”

The black mist didn’t move.

I reached out and poked it.

“Even I’m not angry.”

Only then did the black mist very lightly coil around my fingertip.

Like a great beast that had been wronged but didn’t know how to speak.

My heart suddenly softened.

“Fine.”

“In the future, if anyone curses you again, I’ll curse them back for you.”

That night, for the first time, a very, very low voice came from beside the bed.

It sounded like a stone falling into a deep well-heavy, hoarse, and excessively pleasant to the ear.

“…Alright.”

I snapped my eyes open.

The room was empty.

But I knew I hadn’t misheard.
