Dimensional Store: Welcome to the Apocalypse Apartment - Chapter 146
Chapter 146
Those who are favored tend to become fearless, and they find it easy to say hurtful things.
Because they know that the person who loves them won’t harm them, they feel safe enough to expose the darkest corners of their hearts.
Gu Huaiwei frowned as she read the messages He Jiarui had sent to Ji Xuan.
Everyone has a dark side.
Some things can be thought about in private, but they should never be said out loud.
Gu Huaiwei couldn’t help but sigh. “Does Ji Xuan really have no temper at all? He actually ended up apologizing.” Just reading those messages made her blood pressure spike, yet Ji Xuan had simply endured it.
“He cares about her. When he sees her sadness, he wants to apologize just to make her stop hurting, even if he didn’t do anything wrong.” Lin She looked at the screen expressionlessly. Gu Huaiwei glanced at him in surprise; she had assumed he didn’t understand human nature, yet she hadn’t expected him to be capable of such an insight.
“I didn’t realize you were so perceptive.” Gu Huaiwei rested her chin on her hand, looking at Lin She thoughtfully. “Honest people don’t usually get angry, but if they ever snap, they might actually do something world-shaking… Do you think it’s possible that Ji Xuan kidnapped He Jiarui?”
“It is a possibility.” Lin She’s dark green pupils shifted slightly.
Gu Huaiwei pulled out her phone and brought up the photo of the red circle she had taken today. Showing it to Lin She, she analyzed, “Does this circle represent a Contract Ring? If He Jiarui isn’t dead, I’m leaning toward it being someone she knows.”
Lin She stared at the pattern and said in a low voice, “Let’s go find her.”
“Hmm? How?”
“If this blood belongs to He Jiarui, He Xueyi has a way to track her location before her wounds heal.” Lin She didn’t seem to want to mention He Xueyi, but he kept his personal feelings separate from work and wouldn’t let his emotions affect their efficiency.
Gu Huaiwei immediately stood up, pressing her palms onto the desk with newfound energy. “I’ll go wake him up for some overtime right now.”
“Someone needs to stay at the shop,” Lin She reminded her in his usual cold tone.
Gu Huaiwei tilted her head, thinking for a moment. “Bai Miemie is sound asleep. Would it be a bit cruel to drag her out of bed to watch the shop now?”
Her gaze drifted stealthily toward Lin She.
If she took He Xueyi out, she wouldn’t need to take Lin She…
Lin She instantly saw through Gu Huaiwei’s little scheme. Before she could speak, he said firmly, “I am going with you.”
“Can’t you stay behind to watch the shop?” Gu Huaiwei glanced at him with a hint of disappointment.
“No.” His hair, black as night, hung down the sides of his pale face. His thin black lips uttered words that brooked no refusal. “I understand him better than you do. With me there, he won’t be able to hide his abilities.”
Lin She wasn’t going to give He Xueyi any chance to slack off.
“Fine, then you’re carrying the camera,” Gu Huaiwei agreed, casually adding the task of filming to his workload.
He Xueyi opened his eyes the moment Lin She entered the room. His golden pupils looked like suns falling into the darkness.
The blood-red shadows that had been surging out of his body quickly retracted into him the moment the door opened and light spilled in.
Gu Huaiwei gently pushed open the door to the other room and saw Bai Miemie curled into a ball on her small bed, clutching her quilt.
Bai Miemie’s short hair was curly and snow-white like fleece. Her cheeks were slightly flushed from sleep, making her look exceptionally adorable.
She was sleeping soundly, her breathing steady as her chest rose and fell. Her sheep hooves weren’t fully covered, peeking out from beneath the thin quilt.
So she really was a sheep.
Herbivores truly were lacking in vigilance.
Gu Huaiwei approached and stared at the exposed sheep hoof. She helped tuck the girl in, then called out softly, “Miemie, it’s time to get up. I need you to help watch the shop tonight.”
Bai Miemie blinked groggily, her sleepy eyes filled with confusion. She rubbed her eyes with her tiny hands and mumbled incoherently, “But I want to sleep a little longer…”
“We all have to go out, so how about you go sleep in the lobby?” Bai Miemie looked so soft that Gu Huaiwei couldn’t help but lower her voice when speaking to her, fearing she might startle the girl.
“The lobby…” Bai Miemie propped herself up and asked in a thin, delicate voice, “Does that mean I can sleep in Sister Gu’s little nest?”
“Of course you can.”
“Okay then. Sister Gu’s bed smells so nice, so I’ll go sleep in the lobby… and watch the shop for you while I’m at it.” Wrapped in her quilt, with the long fabric trailing over her feet, Bai Miemie shuffled out like a little dumpling. Before leaving, she didn’t forget to grab her small pillow, her gait wobbling and exceptionally adorable.
He Xueyi, on the other hand, looked like a corporate employee forced into overtime, called up in the middle of the night to work without being allowed a single word of complaint.
“This is the blood I collected. I haven’t run a DNA test yet, so I’m not sure if it belongs to He Jiarui. See if you can track her with it first.” Gu Huaiwei took out the test tube containing the sample. Inside was half a cotton swab stained with blood.
“Shop Manager Miss, how did you know I had a way to track it?”
“Well…” Gu Huaiwei was about to make up an excuse.
“I told her,” Lin She took the credit before Gu Huaiwei could explain. “As a member of the Matchmaking Agency, using your abilities for work is exactly what you should be doing.”
Sensing the tension in the air, Gu Huaiwei immediately cut in, “Lin She is just complimenting your professional competence.”
“Since the Shop Manager Miss is here, I won’t argue with you.” He Xueyi gave Lin She a cold glance before taking the test tube from Gu Huaiwei.
He held it through a paper towel with his slender fingers, as if he were holding something filthy.
“Sorry to trouble you,” Gu Huaiwei said, knowing how much he loathed anything dirty.
An imperceptible look of disgust flickered in He Xueyi’s golden eyes, but he still removed the swab from the tube. He slowly brought it to his lips and gave it a light lick with his tongue.
The scent in the air had not yet dissipated.
He Xueyi narrowed his eyes, catching the faint trail of blood lingering in the atmosphere.
A thin, red line of blood then appeared at his fingertips.
Lin She filmed the entire process.
Gu Huaiwei followed closely behind He Xueyi as they moved through the city shrouded in night. In the dark alleys, aside from stray cats, there were also several wandering Aliens. Some Aliens, seeing that Gu Huaiwei was human, tried to pounce with ill intent, only to be easily dealt with by her.
The red bloodline led them to a dilapidated factory in the suburbs.
After a brief search, Gu Huaiwei found a rusted iron cover leading to a basement.
Descending the pitch-black stairs, Gu Huaiwei saw He Jiarui locked in a cage.
“Who is it?” He Jiarui’s hands gripped the bars of the cage tightly. Her face was masked in terror, and tears streamed uncontrollably from her vacant eyes. “I… I can’t see…”
