Chapter 163

When Zhou Chuanning had taken Gu Huaiwei to the Pet Human Hospital for an examination, he had known nothing about the Big Fat Worm.

Gu Huaiwei immediately thought back to He Jiarui’s Coming-of-Age Ceremony.

After that event, Zhou Chuanning had brought over two screenshots from the surveillance footage. The screenshots showed two versions of Chen Liuxiang appearing at the same time.

Back then, one Chen Liuxiang was real, and the other was a fake.

The person standing before her now was likely the “Chen Liuxiang” who had attacked her back then.

“Miss Gu, I am indeed not Officer Zhou, but this Skin Suit was lent to me by him. He sent me to find you to ensure your safety.”

The purple light from the celestial anomaly outside projected onto the glass door, blurring the face of “Zhou Chuanning.” However, those pitch-black pupils were like abysses, scrutinizing her every move.

“That won’t be necessary. I am very safe inside my shop. It’s late, so please leave. I will contact Officer Zhou myself tomorrow morning,” Gu Huaiwei said with a cold smile, putting some distance between herself and the glass.

“Zhou Chuanning” kept his hand pressed against the glass and spoke slowly, trying to persuade her. “Miss Gu, your current situation is very dangerous. Officer Zhou met with an accident shortly after his last call with you.

“Whatever you do, do not go to the Dawn Alliance. Those who have met the high-ranking officials of the Dawn Alliance didn’t join them because they agreed with their ideals; they were replaced.

“They will kill you and then operate using your identity and face.”

The Alien outside, wearing Zhou Chuanning’s face, was trying to gain Gu Huaiwei’s trust.

Gu Huaiwei had no way of trusting this person of unknown origin.

She immediately retreated into the Matchmaker’s Cottage and dialed Zhou Chuanning’s number.

“Beep… beep… beep…”

The phone rang several times, but no one picked up.

No answer?

Just as Gu Huaiwei frowned, wondering if something had truly happened to Zhou Chuanning, the call she had just ended was returned.

Gu Huaiwei leaned against the door of the Matchmaker’s Cottage and looked up toward the glass in the lobby to check on the Alien.

Before she could even breathe a sigh of relief-

Where was he?

How did he disappear?

“Hello, Officer Zhou…” Once the call connected, Gu Huaiwei prepared to tell him about tonight’s events and ask him to bring his colleagues over to handle it.

However, the voice coming from the other end wasn’t Zhou Chuanning’s familiar tone. Instead, it was a burst of blurred noise, like static interference.

“Sizzle… crackle…”

Gu Huaiwei’s heart sank.

There was a high probability that something had happened to Zhou Chuanning.

If he simply hadn’t answered, she might have thought it was just too late and he hadn’t heard the ringtone. But the problem now was… who was using Zhou Chuanning’s phone to call her back and then remaining silent?

After a moment’s thought, Gu Huaiwei called Wu Ming to verify the situation.

Wu Ming was still working overtime in the office. Hearing Gu Huaiwei’s voice, he seemed to suddenly remember something, and his tone became nervous. “Miss Gu, I’m begging you, I’m already busy enough with work. Please don’t tell me you’re calling to report another crime again, and again, and again.”

Gu Huaiwei’s voice remained flat. “Congratulations, you guessed right.”

“No!” Wu Ming sounded like he wanted to cry.

Gu Huaiwei covered the receiver with her hand and whispered, “I’m not joking. Is Officer Zhou there? If he is, can you two come over together? There’s someone outside my shop wearing Officer Zhou’s Skin Suit. He’s been loitering at the door with ill intentions.”

“Huh? That’s unlikely, isn’t it? Could it be Officer Zhou himself?” Wu Ming paused, his voice becoming much more serious. “Officer Zhou has been on leave lately. I don’t know if I should tell you this, but Officer Zhou actually likes you quite a bit. Since you’ve always been so cold to him, maybe he just missed you too much in the middle of the night and wanted to come see you…”
“I can be certain that the person at the door isn’t Officer Zhou himself,” Gu Huaiwei stated firmly, dismissing Wu Ming’s suspicion.

Wu Ming glanced around his office, which was still brightly lit in the middle of the night, and said with some difficulty, “But the station is very busy right now. We’re short-handed…”

Once upon a time, his position had been considered a cushy job.

Ever since Gu Huaiwei and her Matchmaking Agency appeared in this district, violent incidents had suddenly surged. Higher-ups had sent people over, and they were now suffering through endless daily meetings and overtime.

Humans were a high-priority protected species.

Since Gu Huaiwei had reported an incident, he couldn’t simply ignore it.

Wu Ming sighed. “Are you at the shop right now? If you are, lock the doors and windows and don’t come out. I’ll bring some colleagues over to check it out tomorrow morning.”

“You can’t come now?” Gu Huaiwei wasn’t worried about her own safety; she was worried that the person outside would flee, and the lead would go cold.

“It’s really a bit difficult right now.”

“Fine.” Gu Huaiwei couldn’t force him.

Just after she hung up, a deafening boom suddenly echoed through the lobby.

BANG!

The glass vibrated violently, and the shockwave rippled through the wooden walls of the Matchmaking Agency, making the entire building tremble slightly.

The glass didn’t shatter, but a web of cracks appeared across its surface.

The lights of the Matchmaking Agency instantly shifted from a warm orange-yellow to a piercing red. The red light pulsed on and off, rhythmic like the heartbeat of the agency itself.

Bai Miemie poked her head out of the Matchmaker’s Cottage, rubbing her sleepy eyes. Her hair was a mess, and her small brow was furrowed tight from the lack of sleep. Her voice was groggy. “Sister Gu, it’s so noisy. What’s happening outside?”

Outside the Oasis Matchmaking Agency, clouds of black flying insects were hurling themselves against the glass doors. They were suicidal, splashing slimy green blood against the glass. The spiderweb cracks on the doors gradually expanded, letting out a dull, grating sound that set one’s teeth on edge.

The pungent, fishy stench of the insects seeped through the cracks and into the room.

He Xueyi was not in tonight.

Lin She was in the shop. Wearing a black silk dressing gown, he stepped out of the Employee Dormitory. The hem of his robe trailed loosely on the floor, flowing behind him like a dark river as he walked.

Under the glow of the red light, Lin She’s face appeared even paler. He walked to the center of the lobby, his dark green vertical pupils sweeping coldly over the cracks in the glass door. He wore a rare expression of gravity. “In this Dimension… there is actually someone capable of cracking the glass of a Dimensional Store.”

The natives of a minor Dimension should not have the power to contend with a Dimensional Store.

Gu Huaiwei’s expression darkened slightly as she twirled a lock of black hair falling over her chest. “It’s not a human, then? Humans can’t use Skin Suits.”

“Who says they can’t?” In the depths of Lin She’s eyes, an unfathomable darkness reflected the light.

Gu Huaiwei was slightly stunned. “You mean… humans can also obtain the abilities of an Alien?”

“Those Operators who have survived several Dimensions and ultimately remained in this world will always have some special tricks,” Lin She said in a slow, emotionless tone. “One wrong step, and they become something that is neither human nor ghost.”
