Mu Lingxi rushed to the police station and saw Gu Huaiwei crying, her shoulders shaking with sobs. Mu Lingxi’s heart twisted and she was burning with anger.

Her best friend, Gu Huaiwei, who had always been so strong-even after going bankrupt, losing her family, being splashed with paint, and ending up on the streets, she never shed a single tear. How could she now be crying so heartbreakingly?

Someone must have done something unforgivable!

Mu Lingxi zeroed in on the culprit.

She grabbed Jiang Xingyi by the collar and said angrily, “Was it you who bullied Huaiwei? You bastard! Even if I have to marry that fat slob, I’ll go home, get the money, hire the best lawyer, and make sure you end up in jail!”

Jiang Xingyi’s hair was a bit messy. He raised his hands innocently, shifting the blame elsewhere. “Hey, hey, pretty lady, you’ve got it all wrong. I was just passing by. The real culprits are those seven guys squatting over there.”

The seven little punks took the hardest beating and the biggest blame.

Even though they tried their best to defend themselves at the police station, claiming that Gu Huaiwei attacked their entire group and that they were the real victims, the police didn’t believe them.

Who told them to show up as a gang, armed with weapons, and even go out of their way to destroy the street cameras?

When Gu Huaiwei saw Mu Lingxi had arrived, she didn’t want her friend to really worry about her.

She pulled out two napkins, quickly wiped her dry eyes, then put on her glasses and pulled her bangs down.

“Officer, am I free to go after I finish my statement?”

The policewoman taking her statement looked completely exhausted.

Police are people too. Being dragged out to work overtime in the middle of the night, interrogating people from one to three in the morning, struggling to keep her eyes open-her resentment was heavier than that of a ghost a hundred years dead.

The policewoman pushed the written statement in front of Gu Huaiwei and said, “Take a look. If everything’s fine, sign at the bottom. Once you sign, you can leave.”

Gu Huaiwei carefully read the statement from top to bottom, made sure it fully recorded her version of events, then signed her name without hesitation.

She pulled Mu Lingxi with her out the door.

Once they’d put some distance between themselves and those people, Gu Huaiwei finally brushed her bangs aside and smiled at Mu Lingxi. “Don’t worry, I was acting. They were the ones who got beaten up-I’m completely unscathed.”

Mu Lingxi checked Gu Huaiwei’s face to make sure there were no injuries, then exclaimed in disbelief, “But there were seven of them…”

One against seven-and she won? Incredible.

“I had a knife. Those punks only dared to make trouble; they didn’t dare to go all out. They underestimated me, thinking I was alone, and that’s how I got the upper hand.”

Despite her words, Gu Huaiwei truly felt that her speed and reflexes were nothing like before.

Ever since she took over her sister’s job, her five senses had become unusually sharp.

She could overhear people’s whispers.

She could see distant places through wind and sand.

Now, even her physical abilities had improved significantly.

Was it that book, ‘Women’s Self-Defense Techniques’, that enhanced her body?

Or was there another reason?

Mu Lingxi breathed a sigh of relief and smiled. “You should just buy a car, so you won’t have to walk home at night after work.”

“I will. I’ll buy two.” Gu Huaiwei raised two fingers.

She really did need cars.

One for the Real World.

One to bring to the Wasteland World.

After signing, Jiang Xingyi hurried over to catch up.

His golden hair gleamed like the sun. Flashing white teeth, he gave them a bright, cheerful smile. “Ladies, wait for me! We all had a scare tonight. How about I treat you to some barbecue to calm our nerves?”

Gu Huaiwei refused without hesitation. “Sorry, my family won’t let me hang out with blondes.”

Mu Lingxi raised her hand in agreement. “Same here. Blondes, keep away.”

The two of them only left him their departing backs.
It was the first time Jiang Xingyi had been rejected so bluntly by a girl.

He felt a bit embarrassed.

“Hmph, eat it if you want, if not, I’m not going to serve you anyway.” Standing under the flickering streetlight, Jiang Xingyi had just been snubbed. He kicked a small stone by the roadside, feeling frustrated inside.

He still had to pay the final installment and medical fees to those punks later.

His act of ‘saving the damsel in distress’ hadn’t worked out; instead, he’d ended up sitting at the police station for half a day.

What rotten luck!

At this thought, Jiang Xingyi’s delicate face twisted in annoyance.

He scratched his head irritably, muttering to himself, “So annoying. Even my big brother can’t win her over, and now I’m supposed to trick her? How would I know how to do that…”

Gu Huaiwei and Mu Lingxi went straight back to their rented apartment.

The lighting was soft, and with Mu Lingxi’s decorations, the apartment felt especially cozy.

Gu Huaiwei flopped onto the sofa and let out a long sigh. “I’m exhausted. It’s almost dawn. Tomorrow I’ll go check out the car. You just stay home and rest.”

“I’m not tired. I’ll go with you.” Mu Lingxi opened the window, letting the gentle night breeze drift in. She sensed something was off. “Huaiwei, um… I think someone in the building across from us is watching?”

“Where?” Gu Huaiwei immediately sat up from the sofa.

She went to the window, leaned her head out, and used the curtain to shield herself as she looked outside.

Following the direction Mu Lingxi pointed, Gu Huaiwei saw that in the neighboring building, there was a room with the lights off, and a pitch-black telescope was sticking out.

It seemed the person had noticed them.

The telescope was quickly withdrawn, and there was no more movement.

Mu Lingxi asked worriedly, “Is it still someone from the Jiang Family?”

“Doesn’t feel like it.” Gu Huaiwei rubbed the bridge of her nose, sore from her glasses. “There are actually quite a few people keeping an eye on me. The enemy is in the dark, I’m in the light. Until they show themselves, we need to be careful.”

She thought about earning a bit more money and then rehiring her former bodyguards.

The next day.

The two of them went to the auto mall.

Gu Huaiwei walked into the Audi dealership. From a distance, before even entering, she saw someone at the entrance berating a salesperson.

“If you don’t close a deal again this month, you can get lost!

Don’t think that just because you used to work at some big company, you’re some kind of elite. Here, if you don’t make sales, you’re nothing!

Why do you always button your collar all the way up? Do you really think anyone wants to look at you? Unbutton it a bit and stand at the door!

If there are no customers, you just stand outside in the sun for me! Don’t come in here to enjoy the free air conditioning. The AC isn’t for useless people like you!”

The salesperson kept her head down, not saying a word no matter how filthy the insults got.

Gu Huaiwei looked closely and found the person being scolded looked familiar.

It seemed to be… the former executive secretary who used to follow Sister Changge.

Secretary Wang didn’t shed a single tear. In the adult world, nothing is easy. She composed herself, forced a smile, and tried to attract a few walk-in customers.

Hearing footsteps, Secretary Wang looked up and was surprised to see Gu Huaiwei. Her lips trembled as she spoke, “Boss Gu…”

Gu Huaiwei just smiled at her. “I want to buy a car. Can you help me with the introduction?”

No small talk.

No reminiscing.

Secretary Wang looked at Gu Huaiwei, a little dazed.

In her memory, the sickly little girl cared for by Gu Changge seemed to have grown up in an instant.

The Gu Family had collapsed, Gu Changge had disappeared, and the one most affected should have been Gu Huaiwei.

But Gu Huaiwei was doing just fine. She hadn’t fallen.

She herself had just changed jobs. So what?

At this thought, Secretary Wang felt a renewed sense of motivation.

What’s there to be afraid of? It’s just starting over from scratch.
