Even Though I'm So Pitiful, What's Wrong with Having Two? - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Huo Lun raised an eyebrow and suddenly stood up, straightening his trench coat. “I just remembered I have something to attend to. Please excuse me, Doctor Ning…” He gave me a meaningful look. “And Madam.”
“…”
I realized belatedly that Huo Lun was an alpha.
And, not to be narcissistic, but it seemed like he was hitting on me.
Ning Ze nodded politely, his attitude much more perfunctory. “Goodbye, Colonel Huo Lun.”
After dinner, I began to re-evaluate my relationship with Ning Ze.
Although ours was a government-matched marriage, there were currently no relevant laws protecting the rights and interests of OB couples.
In other words, the government only acted as a matchmaker.
I wouldn’t succumb to Huo Lun’s intimidation just because of Ning Ze’s job.
But if Huo Lun used that job to threaten Ning Ze, would Ning Ze hand me over?
While Ning Ze was in the bathroom showering, I lay in bed, lost in thought.
We had only lived together for a year, and we had no emotional foundation prior to that.
If he did give me up, what would I do?
“Honey, what are you thinking about?”
A voice from above interrupted my train of thought.
Ning Ze had finished his shower and was standing by the bed in his bathrobe, looking down at me.
I decided to be direct and asked him, “A Ze, what if one day you find you can’t afford to support me anymore?”
He said, “That won’t happen. I’ll work very hard. I definitely won’t let that situation arise.”
“What if you lose your job?”
“I’ll find another one.”
“What if it’s still not enough?”
“If one job isn’t enough, I’ll find several. The nights are long anyway; two hours of rest is enough for me.”
“And if it’s still not enough?”
Ning Ze frowned, his face a mask of conflict and struggle. Finally, he said, “Then for those remaining two hours, I’ll just have to close my eyes and sell myself.”
“…”
I couldn’t even roast him for that.
He was a genuine idiot.
I let out a muffled laugh and asked, “Can’t you just let me go out to work and lighten your burden?”
He countered, “Do you want to work?”
In this society, the definition of an omega was ‘delicate.’
This meant that an omega either worked in a high-profile position or was kept at home to enjoy a life of leisure.
There were omegas in high positions who participated in government affairs, but they were generally people who had endured a lot of hardship and possessed sufficiently resilient characters.
As for me, I was just a fake omega full of loopholes.
If my true identity were ever exposed, the only thing waiting for me would be a cold laboratory table.
I looked at the man before me; he always seemed to be shrouded in a soft halo.
I didn’t know if he had noticed anything unusual about me over the past year.
As a low-grade omega, I had no pheromones, no Heat Period, and even my Gland had become smooth after being blown apart.
Most fatal of all, I had periods.
Ning Ze was a Beta, but that didn’t mean he was a fool.
I comforted myself inwardly, thinking that perhaps I was just very good at hiding it.
I said, “Never mind, I don’t want to…”
He sat down beside me, lying down at my side. His hand, still carrying the warmth of the shower, rested on my cheek.
“I don’t think I’ve ever asked for your opinion regarding work before. What are your thoughts?”
I closed my eyes and rubbed against his palm. “Staying at home is quite nice.”
If the day truly came when there was no way out, I would apply to the Federal Government for a new Beta match.
I refused to believe that every Beta was one of Huo Lun’s subordinates.
“A Ze, if that day really comes, I won’t let you sell yourself.”
To lighten his burden, I would run away.
After a moment of tenderness with Ning Ze, he got up to turn off the light.
The room was plunged into darkness. Following a rustling sound, a flash of red seemed to flicker in the air above.
The mattress beside me sank as a pair of arms pulled me into an embrace.
I hugged Ning Ze back, my fingers brushing against a strand of hair. I asked in confusion, “Why is your hair so long?”
He caught my hand and pinned it to his chest. “It isn’t.”
“Oh, maybe I touched something else.”
“Go to sleep, honey. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
