Chapter 10

“I can’t intervene. This is your own food.”

Ji Xiangnan’s cold voice came from the other end of the phone. “No matter how much I look after you, I can’t step in on this matter.”

Gu Xiaonuan sat on the sofa, her hand unconsciously ruffling her hair. Lu Yichen was lying on her bed, sleeping in a daze.

“Old Man, how long are they going to keep provoking us?”

“…Until they find it boring, or until you give up on him and look for other food.” “How is that possible…!”

“Other than me, none of the Fellow Kin know that he has entered into a Blood Contract with you. The Fellow Kin all think he’s just food you’ve taken a liking to.” Ji Xiangnan sounded irritated as well. “Keep him by your side until they lose interest.”

“…I understand.”

The call ended. Gu Xiaonuan sat on the sofa and let out a long sigh. His life was in her hands.

The next day, Lu Yichen woke up in bed, momentarily bewildered.

Gu Xiaonuan leaned against the doorframe, clearly having not slept all night. She rubbed her temples. “Yesterday… you were attacked by the Vampire Clan.”

After a moment of silence, Lu Yichen spoke softly. “You saved me.”

“To be precise, you were attacked because of me.”

Gu Xiaonuan frowned deeply. “If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have gone through any of this.”

“But you protected me well, didn’t you?” Lu Yichen looked up, a light seeming to shine in his eyes, making Gu Xiaonuan avert her gaze.

“There will be more Fellow Kin waiting for a chance to make a move on you. You can’t leave my sight.” Gu Xiaonuan took a deep breath. “I might have to follow you everywhere.”

“Follow me? As in, not leaving my side for a moment?”

Lu Yichen’s hand slowly clenched. “Is it to protect me?”

“Mm… I won’t interfere with your freedom, but you must stay within my line of sight.” Thinking of the Fellow Kin’s games, Gu Xiaonuan couldn’t help but bare her fangs. “They… have no bottom line.”

She had seen too many Blood Clan act wantonly. To the Blood Clan, humans were nothing more than food-something to be played with at will, even… deprived of life.

To confuse, to toy with, to draw nourishment from human blood to ease their own hunger.

As for human emotions, they would mock, deceive, and not care at all.

“Alright, I understand. I’ll do as you say.”

That night, Lu Yichen was already asleep in bed, his breathing even and shallow. Gu Xiaonuan’s laptop was open in front of her when someone arrived outside the door.

She stood up, her eyes already tinged with blood-red.

“Bang! Bang bang!”

The door was suddenly struck with great force, as if it would be broken down at any moment.

The entire door seemed to tremble under the impact. Gu Xiaonuan stood behind it, pressing her hand firmly against it.

“Hahaha!”

Outside the door was a wild, arrogant laugh, which abruptly stopped as the pounding grew heavier.

“Miss Gu…?”

Inside the bedroom, the sleeping man rubbed his eyes and got up, coming to the door. Gu Xiaonuan stood with her back to him, hand pressed against the door.

“Go back. Don’t come over.”

“Bang!”

Just when they thought it was over, the knocking came again, urgent and fierce.

Lu Yichen, standing there, swayed slightly as if he understood something. He obediently retreated into the bedroom, hiding himself in the darkness.

“Is it your Fellow Kin?”

Gu Xiaonuan gave a soft “Mm.” Her blood-red eyes shone in the night, like the finest red wine gleaming through glass.

She quickly walked into the bedroom, pulled Lu Yichen-who was standing at the door-onto the bed, and climbed up herself.

His cheeks seemed to flush again.

“Miss Gu?”

He shifted awkwardly to the side. Gu Xiaonuan rolled over to lie beside him, her cold hand clasping his ear. “Just sleep.”

“Bang bang!”

The rapid pounding on the door was startling in the quiet night, yet, strangely, did not disturb the other residents.

“This is their usual trick for amusement. I don’t care, but you can’t handle it.”

Gu Xiaonuan looked at his slightly pale face and sighed. “For humans, just a few nights of poor sleep is enough to break you.”

“Mm, I understand.”

Lu Yichen replied softly. His slender body shifted slightly on the bed, and his good arm naturally draped over her waist.

He buried his head in her arms. “Like this, I can’t hear it anymore.”
Gu Xiaonuan was forced to hold him. Just as she was about to say something, the knocking outside the door sounded again.

The man in her arms showed no reaction, as if he truly couldn’t hear anything.

She pressed her lips together, placed her hand on his ear, leaned her back against the wall, her blood-red eyes staring into the deep night outside.

Such harassment would only escalate. Previously, she was alone, but this time… it wasn’t just herself anymore.

Fortunately, Lu Yichen recovered quickly. Within a few days, his hand was as good as new. Such rapid healing was thanks to him drinking her blood.

The blood of the Vampire Clan possesses a powerful regenerative ability. Unless special means are used, the life of the Vampire Clan cannot be easily ended.

Ever since his hand healed, Lu Yichen continued living at Gu Xiaonuan’s home. After the hotel incident and the repeated late-night door pounding, Gu Xiaonuan was certain that the Fellow Kin wouldn’t let him go for now.

“Miss Gu, I need to go out for a bit, regarding the new book…”

“Alright, I know.”

Gu Xiaonuan stood up, glancing at the object hanging around Lu Yichen’s neck-a tiny glass vial containing a single drop of her bright red blood.

It was like a collar, worn by the human him.

“You’ve been with me all these days. What about your work?”

In the car, Lu Yichen, sitting in the back, spoke softly. Gu Xiaonuan chuckled, “My work isn’t limited to the office. It doesn’t affect anything.”

“I see. I thought you’d quit, so I could pull you to work by my side.”

The man in the back laughed lightly, wearing a baseball cap and casual clothes, looking youthful and sunny, like a college student untouched by the world.

Gu Xiaonuan smiled, looking at the building ahead, raising her brows slightly. The Old Man’s company was here too.

Inside the office building, men and women in business attire filled the place. The elevator area was packed.

Lu Yichen needed to go to the 45th floor-taking the stairs was out of the question.

Ding.

The elevator doors opened, people streamed out, and Gu Xiaonuan was the first to step in, standing in the innermost corner. Lu Yichen shielded her in front.

“Everyone squeeze in, there’s still room for a few more.”

As more people entered the crowded elevator, the whole crowd was pushed back. Gu Xiaonuan saw Lu Yichen turn to face her, and as the crowd pressed in, he was pushed right up against her.

“S-sorry.”

His arm braced above Gu Xiaonuan’s head, trying to maintain some distance between them. But as the crowd surged again, his tall body pressed even closer.

Gu Xiaonuan suddenly looked up, noticing his flushed earlobes. Her cold hand reached out, steadily supporting his waist.

It felt as if his presence enveloped her completely, his soft breaths and quickening heartbeat sounding in her ear.

The elevator kept moving, but at every stop, more people got on.

Not until the 30th floor did the elevator start to empty, allowing Lu Yichen to straighten up and stand beside Gu Xiaonuan.

At the 35th floor, the doors opened, some people left, and others entered.

Gu Xiaonuan’s dark eyes swept over, meeting the gaze of someone entering the elevator.

The eyes behind the glasses were as cold as ever. Upon seeing Gu Xiaonuan, his thin lips curled slightly, “Here to accompany him?”

Gu Xiaonuan tugged at her lips, “Yes.”

Ji Xiangnan stepped in, standing directly on Gu Xiaonuan’s other side. The people following him entered as well, and the elevator doors closed again.

No one spoke. Aside from the mechanical sounds of the elevator, it was silent.

At the 45th floor, Lu Yichen exited first. As Gu Xiaonuan was about to leave, Ji Xiangnan spoke, “I’ve already warned those who were banging on the door at night.”

Gu Xiaonuan paused, turned back and smiled, “Thanks.”

Ji Xiangnan looked at her little fangs, finally showing a hint of a smile in his eyes. Outside the elevator, Lu Yichen called, “Miss Gu?”

“Go on.”

Ji Xiangnan spoke coldly, and the elevator doors closed. With Ji Xiangnan’s words, Gu Xiaonuan felt a weight lift from her heart. “Starting today, you should be able to sleep well.”

“Hm? Really?”

His beautiful, clear eyes lowered to her smiling lips, “So… someone helped you solve it?”

Gu Xiaonuan grinned, “Yes, it’s been settled.”

“That’s wonderful.”

Lu Yichen’s eyes curved like crescent moons as he smiled, but when he looked up again, they were deep and unreadable.
