Chapter 13

That night, the knocking at the door never came again, but Lu Yichen still slept very poorly.

From time to time, the sound of him tossing and turning on the bed could be heard, along with very soft sighs.

At first, Gu Xiaonuan, who was working in the living room, didn’t pay much attention. But when the noises continued until 2 a.m., she couldn’t help but get up and walk over.

The man on the bed had his back to her, his entire face buried in the quilt, his body curled up tightly.

Even during the previous nights when there was knocking at midnight, he slept more soundly than now.

Soft murmurs came from his side. Gu Xiaonuan stood at the doorway and listened carefully for a few minutes, growing more uneasy the longer she listened.

This didn’t sound like a simple nightmare.

Once she was sure of this, Gu Xiaonuan quickly walked to the bedside. As her cold presence approached, the man suddenly reached out and grabbed her tightly.

“…Don’t go.” His arm circled around, pulling Gu Xiaonuan directly into his embrace. “Don’t leave me, I beg you.”

Lu Yichen’s head nudged closer, burying itself in her chest. His arms tightened around her waist, and cool liquid trickled down his face, landing on Gu Xiaonuan’s neck.

There was a faint light outside. Lu Yichen’s handsome profile was slightly visible. Gu Xiaonuan reached out and touched them – they were human tears.

The man holding her pressed her down firmly. The chaotic breathing and murmurs from earlier quickly faded away as he nestled into her arms.

Just like those previous nights when they slept in each other’s arms, he was as docile as a sleeping cat in her embrace.

Gu Xiaonuan sighed and could only lie there helplessly, but the man’s grip around her waist was too tight. She shifted slightly.

Before she could move much, the force at her waist suddenly increased.

Gu Xiaonuan narrowed her dark eyes. It wouldn’t be wise to break his arm again.

With a muffled grunt, her cold hand slowly reached the top of Lu Yichen’s head. Gu Xiaonuan awkwardly stroked it gently, vaguely recalling that Ji Xiangnan had raised a cat ten years ago and used to pet it just like this.

Whenever he stroked the cat’s head, it would obediently lie there, letting him play with it.

Under her gentle touch, Lu Yichen’s grip around her waist gradually loosened, and he relaxed completely in her arms.

His shallow breaths brushed against Gu Xiaonuan’s chest, but his arms still didn’t let go, keeping her tightly held.

Gu Xiaonuan glanced at the alarm clock on the bedside table and slowly closed her eyes.

Tap!

A sound suddenly rang out in the silent night.

Gu Xiaonuan’s eyes snapped open, blood rushed to her eyes.

Tap tap!

Outside the window, something seemed to be tapping on the glass.

Tap tap tap!

This time, it wasn’t just the bedroom-there was noise in the living room too.

Lu Yichen was awakened by the sound, frowning slightly. Before he could speak, Gu Xiaonuan grabbed the blanket and, with a swift motion, covered him completely.

“What’s going on!”

Lu Yichen’s muffled voice came from under the blanket. Gu Xiaonuan didn’t answer his question. Her slender hand grabbed both him and the blanket, hauling him onto her shoulder.

“Gu… Miss Gu?!”

Lu Yichen was completely wrapped in the blanket, his voice panicked. Gu Xiaonuan pushed open the bedroom door, heading straight for the living room and then the front door.

Crash!

The sound of shattering glass-two dark shadows darted inside!

At that moment, Gu Xiaonuan, dressed in pajamas and slippers, carried Lu Yichen out the door and ran!

Even with a man nearly 1.8 meters tall slung over her shoulder, Gu Xiaonuan ran swiftly. Fortunately, it was late at night and the stairwell was empty except for her racing figure.

Wrapped in the blanket, Lu Yichen seemed to realize something was wrong and stopped making noise, letting her carry him all the way down.

Behind them in the stairwell, there were sounds of pursuit, moving quickly, accompanied by soft laughter.

Gu Xiaonuan’s expression was cold. She’d lost count of how many times she’d been toyed with like this.

She’d been too naive, thinking the Old Man’s warning would make them back off.

Gu Xiaonuan hurried out of the building with Lu Yichen. The pursuit behind them seemed to stop quietly as well.

“Looks like we’ve really angered them-they’re getting even more brazen.”

Gu Xiaonuan spoke in a low voice, the blood in her eyes gradually fading. She suspected there were Fellow Kin lying in wait at the parking lot too, and she wasn’t about to walk into a trap.

“Gu, Miss Gu?”

The man wrapped in the blanket spoke up. “I-I can’t breathe very well.”

Gu Xiaonuan quickly set him down and yanked the blanket off him, which was covered in shards of broken glass.

“You didn’t get cut, did you?”

Gu Xiaonuan’s eyes quickly scanned him. Lu Yichen shook his head. “What just happened?”

“What else could it be? We’ve been found.”

Gu Xiaonuan sounded irritated. Normally, everyone tacitly agreed not to cause trouble at a Vampire’s lair, but for her, that rule could be completely ignored.

After all, a Vampire under fifty years old was fair game for anyone.

Her so-called lair was no longer safe.

She could only go find the Old Man. Otherwise… with Lu Yichen by her side, he probably wouldn’t last a few days.

“Let’s go. We’re heading somewhere safe.”

Gu Xiaonuan spoke. Lu Yichen replied with a quiet “Mm,” obediently following behind, but Gu Xiaonuan stopped first.
She glanced back and saw the man’s bare feet.

With a soft sigh, her cold body approached. Under the man’s shy, flickering gaze, she once again picked him up in her arms.

“Are you afraid my feet will get cut and bleed?”

Lu Yichen looked at her pretty face, letting his arm rest on her, as if being princess-carried by a girl was nothing to be ashamed of.

“Yes. Wounds on the feet are hard to deal with, and… they don’t taste good.”

Lu Yichen chuckled lowly, gave a soft “mm,” and tightened his arms around her neck, burying his face in her cool shoulder hollow.

There weren’t many pedestrians on the quiet street; otherwise, who knows how many looks they would have drawn.

A taxi pulled up in front of Gu Xiaonuan. The driver watched as she deftly placed the man in her arms onto the back seat and couldn’t help but speak up.

“Young lady, you’re pretty strong.”

Gu Xiaonuan got in as well, smiling lightly at the driver. “I lift weights.”

The driver gave her a thumbs-up. Gu Xiaonuan gave him an address-Ji Xiangnan’s address.

In the car, Gu Xiaonuan originally wanted to text Ji Xiangnan, but realized she hadn’t brought her phone. Lu Yichen had his, but Gu Xiaonuan hadn’t memorized Ji Xiangnan’s number.

“We’re here, miss. This is a high-end community; taxis can’t go in. You’ll have to walk from here.”

“Alright.”

Gu Xiaonuan got out, bent down, and lifted Lu Yichen out again. She did it easily, without even pausing, leaving the driver staring in shock.

“Girls these days are really getting stronger and stronger.”

The security guard at the entrance nodded at Gu Xiaonuan, and she nodded back, carrying Lu Yichen inside.

The man in her arms, docile as a fawn, lifted his eyes slightly, his gaze darkening.

They moved forward without hindrance; Gu Xiaonuan entered all the passcodes correctly, until they reached Ji Xiangnan’s door.

Lu Yichen stood beside her, watching as her fingers entered a few digits. The door opened.

The man’s gaze seemed to melt completely into the surrounding darkness.

Gu Xiaonuan pushed the door open and walked straight in, pulling Lu Yichen along with her.

The door opened to pitch-black darkness inside.

A spacious living room stretched out before them, connected to an open kitchen.

A man in a sharp suit stood in the kitchen with his back to them. Clinging to him was a woman, breathing heavily, her face flushed.

Long fingers quickly covered Gu Xiaonuan’s eyes, pulling her back a step.

In the darkness, Ji Xiangnan turned his head slightly, his eyes surging with blood-red color, fangs still stained with fresh red.

Gu Xiaonuan’s eyes were covered, but she could smell the scent of blood and instantly understood.

She quickly retreated, opened the door, and pulled Lu Yichen out with her.

Click.

The door they had just opened closed again, as if nothing had happened.

There was no need to say what was happening inside.

Standing outside, Gu Xiaonuan felt like a child sent out to stand in the hall after being scolded by the teacher. Lu Yichen was hidden in the darkness, only his eyes shining with a strange light.

“Is that your… boyfriend?”

Gu Xiaonuan was stunned. Behind the door, faint sounds could be heard. She frowned slightly. “No, I don’t have a partner.”

The deep darkness in Lu Yichen’s eyes faded bit by bit. “Miss Gu, have you ever done something like that?”

“What?”

Gu Xiaonuan looked puzzled, seeing his slightly flushed handsome face and flickering eyes.

“What’s happening behind that door.”

Gu Xiaonuan fell silent for a moment, then sighed softly. “No, I prefer biting blood bags, not people.”

“Is it more enjoyable that way, drinking blood?”

Gu Xiaonuan raised an eyebrow, not finding anything odd about the question, taking it as simple curiosity. “Maybe. After all, at that moment, human blood flows fastest and is most excited, so the taste is different from usual, right?”

His eyes flickered a few more times as he looked at her. At that moment, the door opened. Ji Xiangnan’s eyes were still blood-red, his fangs not yet retracted.

“Old-” Gu Xiaonuan was about to speak, but Ji Xiangnan seemed to know what she wanted to say. His cold gaze swept over. “Next door, same passcode.”

Bang!

The door slammed shut again, with even more noise coming from inside.

Gu Xiaonuan paused, quickly pulled Lu Yichen to the next door, opened it, and closed it behind them.

Without turning on the lights, Gu Xiaonuan curled up on the huge sofa and let out a long sigh of relief.

On Ji Xiangnan’s turf, she could finally get a good night’s sleep.

“Go to sleep. It’s very safe here,” Gu Xiaonuan said from the sofa, as if she had no intention of getting up. Not hearing any movement from Lu Yichen, she quickly sat up.

But as she lifted herself, she bumped right into his handsome face as he leaned in.

For a moment, their breaths were only a hair’s breadth apart.

Warm lips gently pressed against her forehead. Before Gu Xiaonuan could react, he pulled away.

His tall figure pushed open a door in the darkness and walked in. Gu Xiaonuan sat on the sofa, her hand unconsciously reaching for her forehead.

It seemed his warmth still lingered there.
