Chapter 2

Gu Xiaonuan practically fled, escaping from Mr. Lu’s side.

After delivering him to the hotel, registering the room, and sending the contract to his email, Gu Xiaonuan dashed away as if she were flying.

If she didn’t run, she feared she wouldn’t be able to suppress the urge to sink her teeth into that fair, slender neck.

On the way back, her fangs were already fully exposed. If it weren’t for the fact that it was late at night and no one was around, Gu Xiaonuan wouldn’t have dared get out of the car at all.

Panting, she finally made it home. Only after the last trace of that sweet blood’s lingering taste had completely dissipated did Gu Xiaonuan begin to wash up.

Twenty years of hard self-restraint, and she had almost lost control. She was still too weak.

In the glass mirror, her pale skin showed not a hint of blood. Her sweet features, when she smiled, resembled a bright moon, but her eyes were as cold as a winter’s night.

Her protruding fangs peeked out from beneath her red lips. Gu Xiaonuan parted her mouth slightly; the two sharp fangs looked like deadly blades, able to pierce a throat in an instant.

Her eyes, reddened from the stimulation of that sweet blood, had quietly returned to a completely human appearance.

How long had it been since she last fed?

Gu Xiaonuan gave a self-mocking smile. It had only been ten days, and yet her craving for blood had reached such a degree. Just a small wound, and she was provoked to the verge of turning into a beast in the next second.

Buzz, buzz.

A message came through on her phone. It was from her only Fellow Kin in this city, Ji Xiangnan.

“Ten days. You need to feed. Come over.”

Staring at the cold words on the screen, Gu Xiaonuan let out a soft sigh.

Got it. I’ll come by at the usual time tonight.

In this world, spirits, monsters, and ghosts are all drawn to the human world, because here there is a warmth and liveliness unlike the other side. Especially for their kind-only by walking among humans could they feel alive.

The warmth of human blood and flesh was something their kind could no longer hope for after the transformation. Eternal life also meant eternal coldness and loneliness.

A notification sounded from her email. Gu Xiaonuan checked immediately, only to find it was an email from that young Mr. Lu from yesterday.

Miss Gu, there are some details in the contract that need to be discussed. Do you have time? Could we meet?

The cold words on the screen suddenly brought back the sweet, maddening memory from yesterday.

Her slender, fair fingers quickly typed a reply, without any hesitation.

I’m truly sorry, yesterday was just a temporary arrangement. For any follow-up regarding the contract, other colleagues will be in touch. There will be a designated person to contact Mr. Lu.

Not long after, a reply came through.

Alright, thank you for your help yesterday, Miss Gu.

Gu Xiaonuan replied, “You’re welcome, it’s my job,” and then closed her computer. She got herself ready in the shortest time possible and headed out for work.

She was a junior editor at a publishing house, usually responsible for errands and document revisions, never taking on any outstanding work, nor did she have any ambition.

If she wanted to blend into the human world for the long term, she had to learn to hide herself.

“Xiaonuan, are you free tonight? Let me treat you to dinner!”

The one who had asked for her help yesterday was Sister Liu, the chief editor in charge of signing books for the group. She came over warmly, “Thanks to you saving the day yesterday, I must treat you to dinner.”

The blood vessels pulsing beneath her skin seemed to be the most sincere invitation.

Gu Xiaonuan put some distance between them. “Sister Liu, I have plans tonight. Maybe next time.”

“Oh~ I get it, it’s that boyfriend of yours, isn’t it~”

Gu Xiaonuan smiled. Once, by chance, Ji Xiangnan had come to pick her up himself, worried she might get into trouble if she didn’t feed in time, and was directly mistaken for her boyfriend.

After that, the rumor that she had a boyfriend kept many would-be suitors at bay. Gu Xiaonuan neither confirmed nor denied it.

“Alright then~ I won’t play the part of the homewrecker. Tomorrow! You must make time for me!” Sister Liu patted her on the shoulder and turned to walk into the office.
Gu Xiaonuan returned to her seat, the dazzling, warm sunlight pouring in from outside, landing directly on the back of her hand.

Those beautiful eyes narrowed slightly, and she smiled gently. The Vampire clan of the new century had already evolved beyond the fear of sunlight, garlic, or crosses.

Being able to walk under the sun was the only gift evolution had granted them.

Her phone rang again – it was Ji Xiangnan.

Don’t forget, or I’ll come pick you up myself.

Gu Xiaonuan couldn’t help but laugh. Before she could reply, the phone call came through.

Ji Xiangnan’s voice was like the coldest spring water, devoid of any warmth, slow and measured, icy to the core.

“Seven o’clock. If I don’t see you, I’ll come and get you myself.”

Gu Xiaonuan tugged at the corner of her mouth. “Got it, Old Man, you’re so naggy.”

A soft chuckle came from the other end. “Kids should be obedient, don’t throw tantrums for no reason.”

Gu Xiaonuan hung up directly and sighed.

A 300-year-old Vampire-what else could you call him but an Old Man?

At exactly seven o’clock, neither early nor late, Gu Xiaonuan had just reached the door when it was opened from the inside.

Smooth black hair was simply tied back, a pair of gold-rimmed glasses with scholarly air perched on his tall nose, hiding the beast-like sharpness in his eyes.

Handsome, refined features wore a faintly lazy smile. His simple, clean loungewear gave him a touch of earthly warmth.

“Very punctual, kid.”

“Wouldn’t dare let you come and get me yourself.” Gu Xiaonuan grinned, revealing her two sharp fangs. Ji Xiangnan smiled as well, his own fangs faintly visible.

Gu Xiaonuan strode inside, tossing her bag carelessly to the floor and kicking off her shoes to the side.

“Hand it over, I’m hungry.”

Ji Xiangnan chuckled, stepping over her shoes to the fridge and taking out a blood bag.

Gu Xiaonuan took it, gulping down mouthfuls. “This is… whose blood? It tastes pretty good.”

Watching Gu Xiaonuan drink from the blood bag, Ji Xiangnan sat on the sofa. “A Vampire who doesn’t use her fangs to drink blood can only rely on blood bags. Do you know how many Fellow Kin mock you for being pretentious and timid?”

“Let them say what they want, I don’t care.”

In just a few minutes, the blood bag was empty.

Gu Xiaonuan stuck out her tongue to lick the blood from the edge of the bag, not wanting to waste a single drop. Ever since that incident twenty years ago, she could no longer use her fangs to drink blood.

Ji Xiangnan, who knew about it, silently took on the responsibility of caring for her meals, preparing blood bags for her every so often.

“Still can’t forget?”

Ji Xiangnan got up and walked over, his pale, slender fingers gently stroking her head.

“Ah… I can’t forget.”

Gu Xiaonuan raised the corners of her mouth bitterly. “Every time I’m about to bite down, that scene flashes in my mind-my hands covered in blood, the person in my arms… cold, just like me.”

“As a Vampire, you’re actually afraid of human death?” Ji Xiangnan shook his head helplessly. “Forget it, blood bags aren’t so bad.”

Gu Xiaonuan chuckled. Because of this, she never attended any Fellow Kin gatherings, and apart from Ji Xiangnan, she didn’t like interacting with any of her kind.

“Are you staying tonight?”

“Mm…”

Curled up on the sofa, Gu Xiaonuan gave a muffled reply. Only here could she temporarily forget that sweet, suffocating taste.

In her dreams, the little boy in her arms had eyes that sparkled, filled with the image of her drenched in blood.

Those eyes held no fear, only laughter and an unknown whirlpool.

As if they wanted to pull her down together.

Gu Xiaonuan frowned slightly. Twenty years… Who are you, really? Please, let me go.
