Chapter 60

“Aren’t you fine now? Walk properly.” Gu Xiaonuan gave Lu Yichen a push as he kept leaning his weight against her. The more she pushed, the more he pressed into her.

“Who said I’m fine?” Lu Yichen leaned half his body over. “My chest hurts.”

Gu Xiaonuan sighed and resigned herself to supporting him as they walked forward. Lu Yichen chuckled and pulled her even closer.

“Editor Gu!” Xiao Wu spotted them from a distance and called out. Taohua quickly looked up, her expression darkening the moment she saw Lu Yichen practically glued to Gu Xiaonuan.

“Is Teacher Lu alright now?”

Xiao Wu glanced at Lu Yichen’s arm. The wound was no longer a major issue and had been treated well.

“I’m fine now.” Lu Yichen only straightened up once they reached them, though his arm remained draped around Gu Xiaonuan’s shoulders. “What else do you want to play? Let’s go.”

“Oh, right, sure.” Xiao Wu looked at Lu Yichen’s hand, then at Taohua. “Taohua, what do you want to do?”

“…Whatever. I’m fine with anything.” Taohua lowered her head and sketched a few more strokes. Xiao Wu checked the time.

“How about this? The noon parade is about to start. Let’s find a good spot and watch it.”

Gu Xiaonuan hummed in agreement, and Lu Yichen smilingly said yes. Taohua walked over and showed them the tablet in her hand.

“Teacher Lu, I drew you.”

Gu Xiaonuan looked over and couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration. She looked up at Lu Yichen; the drawing was truly well done.

In Taohua’s drawing, Lu Yichen appeared as a manga character. It was only a profile view, but she had captured his charm and the look in his eyes perfectly.

Giving her the manga rights to Lu Yichen’s book was a good choice.

“Thank you.”

Lu Yichen spoke with a smile, then looked around. “Let’s find some shade. How about over there?”

“Sure, let’s go.” Xiao Wu quickly pulled Taohua along. “I’m telling you, Taohua, even if you can’t land Teacher Lu, I think the manga rights are a sure thing.”

Xiao Wu took a quick peek back. “Editor Gu looks very satisfied. Work a bit harder, and we’ll try to sign the contract as soon as we get back.”

“Oh.”

Taohua seemed disinterested. It was clear she had come for Lu Yichen himself, but she hadn’t expected Gu Xiaonuan to be in the picture.

“Oh, come on. Teacher Lu is excellent, a rare handsome guy, but isn’t money even better?”

Xiao Wu looked at Taohua. “If it comes down to it, just draw him! You can project yourself onto the female lead. You’ll definitely be thinking of Teacher Lu for the male lead anyway.”

Taohua turned to look back and let out a soft sigh.

The group stood in the shade waiting. As noon approached, the sunlight grew increasingly intense.

Gu Xiaonuan felt the sun overhead. Although she no longer feared the light, vampires were still far more fragile under the sun than humans.

“Uncomfortable?” Lu Yichen asked softly. Gu Xiaonuan hummed in response and quickly pulled out a prepared parasol.

“You watch from here. I’m going to the back.” She turned to leave, but Lu Yichen pressed down on her shoulder and pulled her back. “Where are you going?”

“I’m going to the back to use the umbrella. It’ll get in people’s way here.” Gu Xiaonuan waved the parasol in her hand. “Don’t worry, I’ll be able to see.”

At this distance, a vampire’s vision was more than clear enough.

“I’ll go with you.” Lu Yichen held her and walked straight to the back. “With my height, I’d actually be blocking people if I stood in front.”

He smiled at Xiao Wu and Taohua. “The two of us are going to the back. You guys watch from here.”

Xiao Wu nodded with a grin, watching the two walk to the back and stand together under the same umbrella.

A handsome man and a beautiful woman-passersby couldn’t help but steal a few glances.

Xiao Wu looked at Taohua beside her. Taohua’s face was pretty enough, but that only mattered if the guy didn’t have a girlfriend. Given how clingy Lu Yichen and Gu Xiaonuan were, Taohua didn’t have a ghost of a chance.
Before long, upbeat music blared through numerous speakers. Though the parade floats had yet to arrive, the tourists lining the road were already swept up in the rhythm, their excitement palpable.

Gu Xiaonuan stood at the back, Lu Yichen by her side holding a parasol over her. The music was deafening, making it impossible to hear anything clearly.

Soon, the floats arrived.

Accompanied by the music, staff members in elaborate costumes interacted with tourists on the floats, while those surrounding the vehicles danced with infectious energy.

The parade stopped every few steps, and the tourists, caught up in the atmosphere, began dancing along with the staff. The scene was incredibly lively.

Lu Yichen looked down at Gu Xiaonuan’s expressionless face; she didn’t seem particularly interested.

“Come on! Join us!”

The command rang out over the speakers, followed by a distinct, rhythmic drumbeat. All the staff members began clapping their hands.

The tourists joined in excitedly, and the sound of synchronized clapping pulsed through the air in time with the music.

The floats moved and stopped, the music looped again and again, and the tourists cheered with joy. Gu Xiaonuan stood in the shade of the parasol, watching the bustling spectacle before her without any emotional reaction.

As the final float moved forward, some of the crowd couldn’t help but follow it. While the excitement continued further ahead, it was beginning to quiet down here.

“Not interested?” Lu Yichen looked down at her. “I haven’t seen your expression change once. You’re as cold as a stone.”

He smiled and reached out to gently pinch her cheek. Gu Xiaonuan gave his hand a light pat, signaling for him to let go.

Instead of letting go, Lu Yichen quickly brought both hands up to her face, applying a bit of pressure to squeeze her cheeks and her mouth together.

Gu Xiaonuan’s current expression made Lu Yichen laugh.

“You’re so cute like this.” Lu Yichen leaned down and kissed the pouted red lips he was pinching. “Just like… a living person.”

Having said that, he gave her another kiss before finally releasing her face.

“Oh my god, I’m dying from the sweetness,” someone nearby whispered. “I’ve heard of the ‘head pat kill,’ but is this the so-called ‘cheek pinch kill’?”

“Ugh, I want a boyfriend so bad. I want a sweet romance too!”

Gu Xiaonuan listened to the two girls’ conversation. Romance-wasn’t the current relationship between her and Lu Yichen that of a boyfriend and girlfriend?

The Old Man had said that if she was willing, using a human relationship to bind and tether him was the best way.

Gu Xiaonuan tilted her face up. Lu Yichen gave a soft, questioning hum with a smile, as if asking what was wrong.

Thinking about what he had just said, Gu Xiaonuan brought her hands to her own cheeks and squeezed them toward the center, mimicking what he had just done.

What Lu Yichen craved was likely the vibrant, living appearance of a human.

Gu Xiaonuan’s dark eyes looked at him, seeing her own reflection in his pupils. She suddenly felt that her face looked very strange when squeezed like this.

The parasol dropped instantly. The moment the sunlight hit her, she was pulled into his embrace.

He gently pressed her face against his chest with one hand, while his other arm rested across the top of her head, casting a bit of shadow over her.

Flushing, Lu Yichen raised the parasol again, shielding her within the shade of the canopy.

Gu Xiaonuan tried to look up, but Lu Yichen lowered his head, resting his chin on the top of her head.

“Don’t look up yet.”

Gu Xiaonuan gave a compliant hum and stayed still in his arms.

A deepening blush crept up Lu Yichen’s cheeks. He had only one thought in his mind: to hide her away, to hide her deep where no one else could catch a glimpse of how she had just looked.
