The two of them walked side by side. Suddenly, there was a sharp crash of shattering glass, and shards scattered at Hua Suihe’s feet. She stopped in her tracks.

The sound came from the nearby examination room, whose door was left open.

Hua Suihe tilted her head to look inside. She saw a female doctor, her face contorted in rage. Because of the angle, Hua Suihe couldn’t see who she was angry at.

Ye Susheng walked over and knocked on the door, her tone calm as she asked, “What’s going on?”

The female doctor smoothed her messy hair and glanced nervously at the unfamiliar girl following Ye Susheng, who had come to watch. Her palms were sweating anxiously.

Hua Suihe noticed another person: a little girl, about six or seven years old, squatting on the floor. Her hair was tangled and her clothes were filthy, and she was facing away from them.

Fragments of a ceramic cup were scattered on the ground.

The little girl stood up, turned to face them, and greeted them shyly in a bright, clear voice: “Hello, sisters~”

Just now, the little girl had been anxiously fumbling for her eyes on the floor. When she finally found them and stuffed them back in, she’d put them in the wrong way-now she was staring at Hua Suihe with both eyes showing only the whites.

The female doctor’s lips twitched uncontrollably. What kind of excuse could possibly cover this up?

The female doctor spoke with difficulty, “Actually, she… she…”

Hua Suihe responded to her kindly and warmly, “Hello, little one. What were you two doing just now?”

The little girl lowered her head, fiddling with her fingers. “I was just drinking water, but I didn’t hold the cup steady and dropped it.”

Dropped by accident, and even managed to fling it out the door? The female doctor’s mind went blank at this outrageous explanation.

But Hua Suihe either didn’t realize or simply didn’t care-she just believed it, just like that!

She continued, “Oh, I saw there are disposable cups next to the water dispenser outside. Would you like me to get you a cup?”

The little girl refused repeatedly, “No, no, thank you, sister. I’ve already had enough to drink.”

Ye Susheng held Hua Suihe’s wrist, her thumb unconsciously rubbing it. She was starting to lose patience, even wondering if the security guard at the door was failing to pass along information.

They hadn’t even had a chance to see each other much all night, and the act was full of holes. Luckily, Hua Hua hadn’t been frightened-otherwise, she would have exposed everything.

Ye Susheng showed her wish to end the conversation, and gently called, “Hua Hua…”

Hua Suihe smiled as she said goodbye to them, finally letting Ye Susheng lead her away.

Two examination rooms ahead was the one with Ye Susheng’s profile on the door.

Once inside, Ye Susheng closed the door behind her, and only then did Hua Suihe dare to speak.

“Ye Zi, that little girl and doctor just now aren’t script players, are they?”

Ye Susheng paused for a moment before nodding, looking at her a bit nervously. “What’s wrong?”

Hua Suihe sounded a bit down. “Nothing. It’s just, seeing a little girl that age already suffering from cataracts… I was startled at first, but then I just felt sorry for her. She can’t be older than six or seven. Is she that doctor’s daughter?”

Ye Susheng’s red pupils flickered for a moment, and she mumbled, “Ca-ta-racts?”

“Yeah, didn’t you notice her eyes just now?”

Ye Susheng pressed her lips together and gave a soft hum in reply.

Ye Susheng had Hua Suihe sit on the sofa. “I need to go out and work. While I’m not back, Hua Hua, please don’t wander around, okay?”

Hua Suihe sat restlessly, looking at her with big eyes. “Then when will you be back?”

“Very soon. There are a lot of players, but I’ll be quick.” Even though Ye Susheng promised repeatedly, Hua Suihe’s pitiful expression made her suddenly not want to work anymore.

Hua Suihe raised her hands. “Ye Zi, do you have a phone? I want something to pass the time.”

A phone…

Ye Susheng went to her desk, bent down, opened a drawer, and rummaged around for a while before finding a phone. She turned it on, unlocked it, handed it to Hua Suihe, and told her the password.

“I’ll be back soon. Hua Hua, don’t open the door no matter what you hear, okay?” Even after saying this, Ye Susheng still didn’t feel at ease. She took out a pair of over-ear headphones. “Why not play games with the headphones on?”
Hua Suihe took it and urged her to leave, “Alright, go get busy. I can manage on my own.”

She had been here for ten days, and this was the first time she got to touch a phone.

Ye Susheng had a phone, but never brought it home-she wondered if it was some code design issue.

Ten days. After living like a caveman for ten days, she really craved it.

After Ye Susheng left, Hua Suihe excitedly turned on the phone. Checking the signal bars-empty.

She checked the WiFi. No such feature, either.

Aside from two single-player games, the phone only had basic texting and calling functions.

The phone looked pretty new-why was it still a senior phone?

She was genuinely curious about what phones were like in the game world compared to the real world. If she logged into her account and started streaming with the in-game software, could people in the real world see it?

But she didn’t even get the chance to try.

She put the earphones aside and tapped open a single-player mini game.

A logic puzzle mini game-Hua Suihe quickly became absorbed.

Meanwhile, Ye Susheng, who had gone out to work, had only one thing on her mind: to finish early and hurry home to be with her Hua Hua wife.

She teleported up to the third floor. The second and third floors really were noisy, full of people.

“Don’t make a racket, don’t wander around. Find your own pet, claim your own pet, and come to me to process your discharge before sunrise, okay~” Her voice drifted down the long, dim corridor, ghostly and haunting, seeping into every player’s ears.

“What do we do, what do we do? Su Sheng is out!”

“Shut the hell up! Do you want all of us to die here?”

“Lan Er just got killed by that pack of monsters-he died right in front of us.”

“Those weren’t our pets at all. Lan Er picked one at random, and that rabid dog ate him. Literally ate him alive.”

“I don’t want to die. I don’t want to die, wuwuwu…”

The tense atmosphere of fear and unease spread between them. Six people huddled together now; their original team had ten, but four were already dead.

Among the six, three were experienced players and three were newcomers. The new players, once rebellious and unwilling to take on quests, were now scared out of their wits.

“Su Sheng isn’t like the other NPCs. When you run into her, all the rules break down-just focus on staying alive.” The veteran player remained calm. “There’s a new system hint. This is the key to clearing the level. Everyone gets a different clue, so I hope we can share them.”

Another experienced player spoke sternly, “Either you hide and survive until dawn, or clear the level and earn points-or die.”

Suddenly, an NPC spoke up, cutting off their conversation: “You six, what are you doing here? Who’s your pet’s attending physician? What’s the number? Are you here for a visit, or to discharge someone?”

At the same time, a new system prompt appeared in Hua Suihe’s mind.

“There’s a backup of all pet records in the director’s office.” Hua Suihe set down the phone and read the hint aloud.

The director’s office?

Oh, she was a plot player. This clue was for her.

The game in her hand had reached a dead end.

Should she go out and have a little fun?

But Ye Zi told her not to go out, to wait here.

The two little people in her mind were locked in battle. In the end, Hua Suihe picked up the phone and opened the other game.

She had to be obedient, not run around. But what about the other players? Did they also feel as out of place as she did?

Ye Zi should be back soon-she’d go out together once she returned.

Hua Suihe convinced herself and immersed herself in a new game.

“Ka-chak-”

Hua Suihe’s ears twitched at the sound of the door opening. Thinking it was Ye Susheng coming back, she stood up, ready to greet her with a smile.

But seeing an unfamiliar girl’s face, Hua Suihe’s smile froze on her lips.

“Who are you…?”
