Chapter 79

Xia Moyi lowered her eyes to type a note, hiding the loneliness in her gaze.

It was only natural that Hua Suihe hadn’t given her real name; in her eyes, Xia Moyi was just a stranger.

Xia Moyi put away her phone and asked, “Are you alone?”

Hua Suihe’s eyes darted around as she made up a lie on the spot. “Ah, I’m here with my wife. She went to buy some food, so I’m waiting for her here.”

Xia Moyi nodded, wrapping the leash around her palm to pull the dog back to her side.

She knew Hua Suihe didn’t want to chat much, but she couldn’t bring herself to leave such a rare opportunity behind.

Xia Moyi stroked the dog’s fluffy head. “My dog’s name is Mianbao.”

Hua Suihe stared at the massive dog, suddenly finding it hilarious. Her eyes crinkled as she laughed. “That sounds delicious. No wonder he grew so big.”

Xia Moyi’s eyes wavered slightly. She quietly observed Hua Suihe’s expression, waiting for a reaction with a mix of hope and anxiety.

But Hua Suihe’s smile gradually faded, and the reaction Xia Moyi hoped for most never came.

Xia Moyi crouched down to adjust the dog’s bib, though her fingertips were actually trembling. When she heard Hua Suihe’s polite but distant farewell, she only dared to hum in response, not having the courage to ask her to stay.

“Whimper… Woof woof!”

Xia Moyi turned her head, watching as the other woman’s back receded into the distance.

“Mianbao, she doesn’t remember you,” Xia Moyi whispered hoarsely, stroking the dog’s fur with a look of desolation. “Even though she was the one who gave you your name, she didn’t think of you at all.”

“Woof woof!”

Xia Moyi slowly stood up and composed herself. She pulled her hat lower and led the dog back the way she came.

Hua Suihe continued walking along the riverbank for a while. Passing a cotton candy vendor, she bought two oversized ones, holding one in each hand.

One for herself, and one to take back to Ye Zi.

Hua Suihe put the earlier encounter out of her mind. She passed a stall selling jewelry and bracelets and bought a few items.

Finally, she headed back fully loaded, though the cotton candy had somehow gotten squashed along the way.

Just as she was feeling annoyed at her own carelessness, she heard Ye Susheng’s voice.

“Hua Hua! I’m here~”

Ye Susheng appeared beside her like a gust of wind. Staring at the oddly shaped cotton candy in her hand, she poked the wrapper curiously. “What’s this?”

“Cotton candy,” Hua Suihe handed one to her. “It’s very sweet. Want a taste?”

Ye Susheng unwrapped it and took a bite, getting some on the tip of her nose.

With one bite, her mouth was filled with pure sweetness.

Cotton candy… Hua Suihe always called her black mist “cotton candy.” So it turned out Hua Hua liked eating it.

Unfortunately, the black mist didn’t have this kind of sweetness, which was why Hua Hua never said she liked it when it was stuffed into her mouth.

Hua Suihe saw the sugar strands on the tip of Ye Susheng’s nose and couldn’t help but chuckle. “You can tear it off with your hands first, otherwise it’ll get all over your face.”

Ye Susheng leaned toward her. “Feed me, Hua Hua.”

“I haven’t washed my hands,” Hua Suihe refused flatly. She had touched so many things-the riverbank railings, the jewelry at the stalls, and more. If she hadn’t been worried about her hands being dirty, the cotton candy would have been in her stomach long ago.

Ye Susheng felt a sudden wave of disappointment and used her black mist to consume the entire piece of cotton candy.

Hua Suihe didn’t notice. Her attention was caught by a stall selling fresh coconut juice, and she came back with two coconut eggs.

As Ye Susheng took one of them, she also took the various bags from Hua Suihe’s hands.

“What do you want for dinner, Hua Hua?”

“Anything is fine. Let’s just eat something light.”

The two of them walked a long way, buying some ingredients from a supermarket before finally heading home with their bags.
While waiting for the elevator downstairs, she heard a dog panting.

When the elevator doors opened, the person leading the dog behind her stepped inside as well.

Xia Moyi said with a beaming smile, “We meet again, Peanut.”

Hua Suihe pressed the button for the 40th floor and watched as the other woman pressed the 38th. “What a coincidence. Do you live here too?”

“Yeah, I live quite close to you.” Xia Moyi noticed the two bags in her hands and instinctively wanted to help. “Are you grocery shopping alone?”

But before she could offer her assistance, the bags in Hua Suihe’s hands vanished into thin air.

The smile on Xia Moyi’s lips faded slightly. “So there’s someone else here.”

Raising an Anomaly through special secret methods wasn’t unheard of. Others couldn’t see them; only the master could. While an Anomaly couldn’t harm people in normal areas, the master still had to bear certain risks.

Was the one she was keeping a safe one?

“It’s not ‘someone else.’ It’s my wife,” Hua Suihe said, looping her arm through Ye Susheng’s. She stole a glance and saw that, sure enough, Ye Zi’s gaze was fixed straight on Xia Moyi.

Did Ye Susheng also think that Hua Suihe looked like the girl in front of them?

At that thought, Hua Suihe’s smile vanished, and she didn’t feel like talking anymore. She stared fixedly at the elevator floor numbers jumping upward.

Xia Moyi didn’t know why the atmosphere had suddenly turned cold, but she could tell that Hua Suihe didn’t really want to deal with her.

Was she afraid that the Minor Anomalies she was keeping would get jealous? So that was what she meant by “wife” today.

When they reached her floor, Xia Moyi stepped out first.

Upon reaching the 40th floor, they exited the elevator, opened the door to Room 401, and walked inside.

Hua Suihe didn’t say a single word to Ye Susheng the entire time.

“Hua Hua, should I put these vegetables in the fridge?” Ye Susheng began sorting through the plastic bags in her hands.

“Are we eating this meat today? If not, I’ll put it in the crisper drawer.” Ye Susheng neatly categorized and put everything away.

When she still didn’t get a response, Ye Susheng realized something was off. She followed Hua Suihe to the sink and watched her wash her hands. “Hua Hua? Hua Hua, why are you ignoring me~?”

She squeezed out some hand soap for herself too and washed up alongside her.

After Hua Suihe dried her hands, she walked out, took out the jewelry she’d bought today, and dumped it onto the coffee table.

Ye Susheng sat down on the sofa beside her, calling her again and again. “Hua Hua~ Hua Hua, Hua Hua Hua Hua~”

Hua Suihe pulled her hand over, picked out a dark navy woven bracelet, and slipped it onto her wrist. “Looks good.”

Ye Susheng was delighted. “Anything Hua Hua gives me looks good!”

Hua Suihe continued sorting through the cheap plastic bangles, then asked as if it were nothing, “Do you think that girl just now looked a lot like me?”

“Huh?” Ye Susheng looked completely lost. “No. She’s so-so. She doesn’t look like Hua Hua at all.”

Hua Suihe’s eyes widened. “How is she so-so? She’s pretty.”

Hua Suihe thought she was pretty, and since Xia Moyi looked like her, then Xia Moyi had to be pretty. Absolutely.

“Hua Hua, you’re praising her.” This time it was Ye Susheng who wasn’t happy. She wrapped one arm around Hua Suihe’s waist and rested her face on Hua Suihe’s shoulder. “Hua Hua, do you know her? The way she talked to you sounded really familiar.”

Hearing that cool, clipped tone, Hua Suihe felt inexplicably guilty and hurried to explain, “We just met. We’re not close.”

“Just met is still knowing her.”

“Hua Hua…”

Ye Susheng suddenly tightened her grip and dragged her down onto the sofa. She hovered over Hua Suihe, staring straight into her eyes. Her silk-like white hair spilled over Hua Suihe’s neck, and her warm lips followed, pressing down.

Hua Suihe’s mind went hazy as she thought: Wait-wasn’t I the one hung up on why Ye Susheng kept staring at Xia Moyi?
