My Deskmate is Not Human - Chapter 11
Shen An’s older sister, Shen Ning, came to see me.
She did not come to blame me.
She handed me a check of considerable value.
It was a commission for looking after Shen An.
“My brother is so disobedient.”
The woman, dressed in a black suit, was stunningly beautiful. Her long hair was neatly tied up, and she wore sunglasses, looking quite troubled as she took my hand.
“He knocks over the calming incense that the administrator uses every day, and he’s not very cooperative with his treatment. I was hoping you could help look after him.”
I nodded, but declined her kindness. “I’m happy just to be able to visit Shen An, there’s no need to pay me.”
“It’s just a bit of pocket money. Sister-in-law, this is my heartfelt token-please accept it.”
Shen Ning insisted. When I heard her call me “sister-in-law,” my ears suddenly turned red, and I responded awkwardly with a quiet “okay.”
“So well-behaved, much more obedient than Shen An.”
Shen Ning gently patted my head.
“Shen An is very obedient too.”
I defended him softly.
Shen Ning shook her head. “He was stubborn even when he was alive-naturally frail, didn’t like taking medicine, never went out to play with kids his age. When the pain became unbearable, he jumped into the river.
“You saved him once, didn’t you?”
Shen Ning lowered her voice. Seeing the confusion on my face, she smiled and explained, “It was about three years ago. He stood on a bridge, ready to jump. I got the call and rushed over, and you were there holding onto him, talking to him for a long time.
“But he just stood there in silence, staring at you. He was a boy with feminine features-very pretty, with long hair. When you saw me arrive, you thought he was my younger sister and asked me to take her home.
“Later, after he died, I performed a ritual to keep his soul in the world. He stayed at home, always gloomy. I did some asking around and arranged for him to be in your class.”
“Huh?”
I was a bit surprised.
“Shen An really likes you.
“Sister-in-law, I’ll leave him to you.”
Shen Ning shook my hand with great solemnity,
as if we were negotiating a major business deal.
“I will, s-sister.”
I called her by that title, feeling awkward.
But Shen Ning embraced me and spoke softly:
“I’ve always felt I let Shen An down.
“But it’s wonderful that he has your love.”
