The door was opened.

I took out a pair of large, fluffy white rabbit slippers for Shen An to change into, and poured a glass of warm water, letting him sit on the sofa to rest.

The hair dryer blew warm air into my palm.

Absentmindedly, I dried the half-wet school uniform in my hands, pondering the words the old lady had just said.

According to the neighbors in the community, she was a shaman.

Her reminder just now-could it be that she also knew that a month from now, I might be killed by some monster?

Foretelling the future is indeed hard to believe.

But I learned this news a month ago, from a modern supernatural novel I happened to pick up.

The city and scenic spots in the book’s world were exactly the same as those in my own, even the male lead was someone I knew.

My childhood neighbor’s older brother, Bai Shang, was a Monster Hunter, working at the Yin-Yang Investigation Bureau, responsible for handling unnatural incidents involving ghosts and monsters.

And I was the third victim killed at the start of the third case unit-an orphan with almost zero social interaction, whose death was both tragic and terrifying, making the case extremely difficult to solve.

When I read this, the book in my hands suddenly turned to ashes, as if forbidding anyone from peeking into fate and the future.

But I had already moved.

Could it be that I still can’t escape a miserable fate?

I sank into sadness, feeling rather down.

But soon, a chill crept up from the depths of my heart.

That sinister gaze, impossible to ignore, appeared again.

He seemed to be hiding in some dark corner, quietly, with a sick obsession, watching me-his gaze falling on my hands, my face, my back.

Carefully tracing the lines of my brows and eyes.

As if gently waiting for me to lower my guard, then viciously swallowing me whole.

I suddenly looked up, searching for him.

Nothing.

The white fluorescent lights in the room were glaringly bright, the hair dryer in my hand buzzed noisily, and the boy on the sofa sat with his head bowed, sipping water quietly, nothing out of the ordinary.

Was it just my imagination?

Or had some murderous monster come for me?

Cold sweat seeped from my palms. I turned off the hair dryer, placed the school uniform on the table, and uneasily sat down beside the boy.

“Shen An.”

I called softly.

He looked at me, his expression calm.

“Do you believe there are ghosts and monsters in this world?”

I noticed he seemed to freeze for a moment.

I held his hand, afraid he wouldn’t believe me, and anxiously explained the strange feeling of being watched just now.

“Will he kill me?”

Saying it out loud did make me feel a bit better.

I sobbed quietly.

“He won’t.”

Shen An’s cool, jade-like fingers wiped away my tears. His fingertips gently stroked the corners of my reddened eyes, soothing me softly: “Don’t cry.”

“Why?”

He lowered his eyes, the darkness in them deepening, his cold voice tinged with hoarseness: “It excites him.”

Some killers do enjoy tormenting their victims.

I stopped crying, my eyes red as I hugged him, curling up uneasily.

“Let me hold you, Shen An.”

Shen An gently stroked my back and said in a low voice:

“I will protect you.”

His reassurance was so steady and firm.

“Thank you.”

I looked up at the boy.

His black hair fell loosely, his features strikingly beautiful. The loose black sweatshirt revealed glimpses of his lovely collarbone, a tear mole at the corner of his eye, giving him a touch of cold, aloof charm.

“Before that, class president.”

Shen An leaned in, his falling hair tickling my neck. He cupped my cheek with one hand, his fingertips tracing my brows and eyes, lingering on my lips, his voice tempting:

“May I ask for some compensation?”

“O-of course.”

My shoulders trembled lightly, my fingers clutching the fabric at his waist, looking at him in confusion, stammering: “But Shen An, what do you want?

“I’m afraid I can’t afford it…”

Shen An didn’t answer, his delicate brows curving slightly.

His lips, red as blood, curled into a faint smile.

It was the first time I saw him smile.

Shen An was truly beautiful.

And very gentle.

I couldn’t help but be captivated, my heart racing, unconsciously murmuring, “Shen An?”

My soft, gentle tone carried a hint of alluring tremble.

Shen An’s hand paused as he caressed my lips, his gaze darkening to a chilling depth, his fingertips moving from my lips to the back of my neck.

The boy’s slender figure leaned down over me.

Just as his lips were about to touch the corner of mine-

The door was suddenly knocked.

A gentle male voice called out.

“Is Jiang Qiao here?”

The ambiguous, damp atmosphere in the air was interrupted.

I snapped back to reality, my cheeks flushed red, awkwardly pulling away from the boy’s embrace, standing up, my wrist caught by his cool fingers.

“Sh-Shen An.

“Someone’s knocking. I think it’s my neighbor’s brother. I’ll go take a look.”

I explained softly, uneasily trying to withdraw my hand.

But Shen An lowered his eyes, his attitude a bit forceful.

“Will you come with me?”

“Mm.”
