Chapter 1

My name is Pei Wu. I’m twenty-seven years old. My day job is in planning; my side hustle is cleaning up my own corpses.

By “cleaning up corpses,” I mean finding ways to drag myself out of the pile of men my mother forces me to meet on blind dates-men who are always “great on paper” but make you want to call the police the moment they open their mouths.

This was already my fourth date this month.

On my left was the Finance Guy. He’d started studying my hands the second he sat down, claiming that a woman with soft hands brought luck to her husband.

On my right was an even more impressive specimen. While cutting his steak, he asked me if my menstrual cycle was regular, as his mother was quite concerned about that sort of thing.

I wanted to dump my soup over his head right then and there.

But I couldn’t.

My mother had already laid down the law: if I ruined this blind date, she’d cut off my living allowance for next month.

Even though I have a salary, an adult can still be cowed by a precisely targeted threat from their mother.

So, I made an excuse to go to the restroom and ducked into a stall to message my best friend, Li Jianjian.

“Help.”

“If you don’t come soon, I’m going to be trending on the news tonight for murdering my blind dates.”

Li Jianjian replied instantly: “I’m working overtime. I can’t save you remotely.”

“Didn’t you mention some kind of ‘temporary boyfriend for hire’ service?”

“Yeah. The most expensive one is eight hundred an hour. It covers dominating the room, hand-holding, taking shots for you, and escorting you home. It doesn’t cover kissing, illegal acts, or meeting the parents.”

I didn’t hesitate: “Book the most expensive one.”

“Make sure he looks fierce. Ideally, the kind of guy who’d give an ex-boyfriend psychological trauma.”

Twenty minutes later, the door to the private room opened.

I had been looking down, pretending to be busy, when the entire table suddenly went silent.

I looked up and saw a man standing in the doorway.

He wore a black overcoat. He was broad-shouldered and long-legged, with features that were almost too sharp, and a gaze that was incredibly deep.

He wasn’t just handsome in the ordinary sense.

It was a wild, cold, “don’t mess with me” kind of good-looking.

Especially those eyes-they were like a predator in the dark. One look from him and you’d feel an instinctive surge of tension.

He walked straight toward me, stopped at my side, and leaned down to say my name.

“Pei Wu?”

I nodded.

In the next second, he tucked a stray lock of hair behind my ear and whispered, “Sorry I’m late.”

“Is my girlfriend mad?”

This level of professionalism was worth every bit of that eight hundred.

I immediately slipped into character, looking up at him with a smile.

“Any later and I would’ve been looking for a new husband.”

His eyes darkened slightly, as if the comment actually annoyed him.

But quickly, he pulled out the chair next to mine and sat down, naturally taking my hand in his.

His palm was hot.

His grip was steady.

It didn’t feel like a service; it felt like an instinct.

For the next half hour, he shut down everyone at the table in an extremely calm yet oppressive manner.

When a divorced director bragged about owning three properties, he said flatly, “Pei Wu pays her own mortgage. She doesn’t need to be an attachment on anyone else’s household registry.”

When the Finance Guy said women should return to the home after marriage, he didn’t even look at the man. “When she’s busy, she does the work of three planning teams by herself. You should ask yourself if you’re even worthy of wasting her time.”

When my mother pulled me aside to demand when we started dating, he held my hand with a straight face and nodded to her. “It’s my fault. I should have come to visit properly sooner.”

I almost believed him myself.

As things wrapped up, my mother asked me with a complicated expression, “Is this really your boyfriend?”

Before I could make up a name, the man spoke.

“Wen Yan.”

“‘Wen’ as in famous, ‘Yan’ as in inkstone.”

Once my mother was pulled away by another auntie, I finally breathed a sigh of relief and reached for my phone to settle the bill.

However, Wen Yan didn’t accept the payment.

He just looked at me, then suddenly took a step forward, pinning me against the car door in the underground garage.

“Pei Wu.”

“Whose scent is that on you?”

I blinked, startled. “What scent?”

Wen Yan leaned down as if sniffing the back of my neck, his voice suddenly dropping an octave.

“The scent of a male wolf.”

I stayed silent for three seconds before asking sincerely, “Does your platform offer immersive werewolf roleplay too?”
