My Hired Chat Boyfriend at the Blind Date Is Actually a Wolf - Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Wen Yan didn’t laugh.
Instead, his expression grew colder, as if he were suppressing something.
I initially thought he was just adding some extra flair to his performance, but in the next second, he suddenly raised his hand and lightly brushed the area behind my ear.
“Here.”
“The scent was left not long ago.”
I lowered my head to sniff myself but couldn’t smell a thing.
Just as I was about to ask if he worked part-time as a dog trainer, a familiar, punchable voice drifted over from behind me.
“Pei Wu, I’ve got to hand it to you.”
I turned around and nearly gagged from the sheer bad luck of it all.
It was Zhou Jibai.
My ex-boyfriend.
He had a young woman on his arm, and next to him was his notoriously difficult mother. The whole family of three, all present and accounted for.
Zhou Jibai looked Wen Yan and me up and down, his smile both petty and contemptuous.
“We’ve only been broken up for a few months, and you’ve already found someone new?”
“Or is this just some guy you hired to save face?”
Before I could open my mouth, Wen Yan cast a cool glance toward him.
“Who she sees has nothing to do with you.”
Mrs. Zhou recognized me and immediately let out a sarcastic laugh.
“Oh, Little Pei, I thought you had higher standards. Why are you coming to a place like this to find a partner?”
I hated that look on her face more than anything.
Back then, she used to complain that my job kept me too busy, while simultaneously grumbling that I didn’t earn enough. She basically wanted a daughter-in-law who was a combination of a free maid and a financial advisor.
I was just about to start blasting her when Wen Yan squeezed my hand, signaling me to stay still.
Then, he looked at Mrs. Zhou, his tone as calm as if he were reading a public announcement.
“Ma’am, she isn’t here to find a partner.”
“She’s here to inform certain people that losing her is a loss they’ll have to live with for the rest of their lives.”
I almost lost my composure right then and there.
Zhou Jibai’s face turned pale with frustration, but he wasn’t ready to give up. He continued to glare at me.
“Pei Wu, stop pretending.”
“If your life was actually going well, you wouldn’t need to come to a matchmaking event to find someone to put on a show with.”
Wen Yan suddenly let out a small laugh.
It was a faint smile, but it carried a hint of danger.
“Who told you this was a show?”
As he spoke, he reached out and pulled me closer into his arms. The movement was incredibly natural, as if I belonged in his space to begin with.
“Furthermore.”
“Someone like Pei Wu doesn’t need to prove to anyone that she’s doing well.”
“Her simply standing there is worth more than everything you’ve ever picked out for yourself.”
Zhou Jibai was rendered completely speechless.
Meanwhile, the tips of my ears were burning.
How did this man always manage to speak like he was hiding a blade inside a piece of candy?
It wasn’t until the elevator doors closed, cutting off that family of three, that I finally managed to catch my breath.
I looked at Wen Yan and thanked him sincerely.
“Thank you for today.”
“You’re welcome.”
“Does the platform train everyone to this standard?”
Wen Yan tilted his head to look at me, his expression unreadable.
“The platform has no control over me.”
I was about to respond when a heavy *thud* suddenly echoed from the roof of the car.
In the next second, a twisted black shadow lunged onto the windshield.
It wasn’t a dog, nor was it a wolf.
It looked more like a canine that had been torn apart and stitched back together. Saliva dripped from the gaps in its teeth, and a pair of murky yellow eyes stared fixedly at me.
“Found you…”
“The scent of a Boundary Keeper…”
My back went numb instantly.
Wen Yan unbuckled his seatbelt and said in a low voice:
“Sit still. Don’t move.”
