Chapter 2

Fear was replaced by fury.

Without a word, I yanked the door open and snapped, “Go to hell, Shen Zhijin!

“What is wrong with you?

“It’s the middle of the night. Why are you acting like such a creep instead of sleeping?

“This is my house, do you hear me?!

“This-”

Before I could finish, he pulled me into a tight embrace.

His arms locked around my waist with terrifying strength.

I was just about to ask what kind of mental breakdown he was having when he rested his chin on my shoulder and beat me to the punch with an apology: “I’m sorry.”

His voice was as cold and clear as ever, but it held a hint of lingering attachment.

I froze, stunned by his sudden shift in attitude.

I tried to push him away, but he didn’t budge an inch.

“Let go of me,” I said coldly.

“Okay.”

He obediently released me.

A large, vibrant, and romantic bouquet of roses suddenly filled my vision.

“Flowers.”

He smiled and placed them in my hands. “For you.”

I stood rooted to the spot, my mind a complete blank.

The flowers were deep red and blooming beautifully.

I looked up at him.

The young man was dressed impeccably in a suit. His black hair was smooth and soft, and his face was both familiar and handsome-high bridge of the nose, thin lips, and a tiny mole at the corner of his mouth.

It was definitely Shen Zhijin.

The only difference was his eyes.

His pupils were pitch black. The usual indifference had vanished, replaced by a surging love that felt like it could drown a person.

Love?

How was that possible?

Yet there he was, quietly watching me.

His gaze held a tenderness I had never seen before.

I couldn’t help but feel dazed; it almost felt laughable. I was bewildered by his current performance.

“What’s wrong?”

Confusion flickered in his eyes as he reached for my hand.

I avoided him without leaving a trace.

Stepping aside, I invited him in. “Sit.”

I placed the flowers on the table and pointed to the sofa opposite me.

Shen Zhijin sat down compliantly, his expression composed. However, the tips of his ears beneath his black hair were flushed red, and he looked at me with a gentle gaze.

For some reason, I felt as if his gaze was physically clinging to me-like a cold, damp snake slowly and silently slithering over every inch of my skin.

A powerful sense of strangeness and unease welled up in my heart.

But the person in front of me was definitely him.

Ignoring the discomfort, I said mockingly, “It’s the middle of the night. You’re hugging me and giving me flowers-what’s gotten into you?”

He tilted his head, looking puzzled. “You don’t like them?”

“Since when have you ever cared about what I like?”

I let out a harsh laugh and sneered, “What? Did you get tired of playing missing person and decide to come back?

“Did you spend the last two weeks with your White Moonlight?

“Is that why you’re feeling guilty and came here to make up?

“Have you no shame, Shen Zhijin?”

I fired off one question after another.

The young man lowered his eyes and fell silent for a few seconds, as if he were thinking about how to organize his words. Then, he whispered, “I do care about what you like.”

My hand, reaching for a water glass, froze in mid-air.

With a serious expression, he answered my questions one by one:

“I didn’t go missing on purpose.

“I wasn’t with anyone else.

“I don’t feel… guilty?

“I have shame. I am… Shen Zhijin.”

His voice was stiff and awkward.

I was too preoccupied with my own shock to look into it further; I didn’t even notice how extremely strange and unnatural his behavior was.

“Stop acting crazy, Shen Zhijin.”
I looked at him coldly.

“I know you don’t like me.

“I’m not going to force it anymore.

“I’ve come to terms with things over the past few days.”

He froze, his hands resting awkwardly on his lap as if processing my words, using a mask of calm to hide his inner turmoil.

Seeing his silence, I pulled the divorce agreement out of the nightstand and tossed it in front of him. “I just finished drafting this with the lawyer the day before yesterday,” I said coldly.

“Don’t worry, you won’t get the short end of the stick when it comes to the division of assets.

“Take a look. If there’s anything you’re unhappy with, you can bring it up now.”

Shen Zhijin’s gaze shifted from my face to the table.

“What is this?” he asked.

I couldn’t help but laugh.

“What else could it be? A divorce.”

“Divorce?”

He repeated the word.

Seeing that he wasn’t moving, I held the agreement out to him.

“Take a look. If it’s fine, just sign it-hiss-”

The young man didn’t take the papers. Instead, his well-defined fingers suddenly clamped around my wrist, slowly tightening their grip.

He looked up, his dark pupils fixed on me with a strange, eerie, almost non-human intensity.

Our eyes met.

I realized his skin was pale to a sickly degree.

His hand was even colder than before.

A bone-chilling cold seeped into my marrow.

Driven by the instinct to avoid danger, I subconsciously tried to pull back.

He refused to yield, gripping my hand tightly.

Yet, in contrast to his strangely forceful behavior, his long lashes trembled slightly. He pressed his handsome, refined face against my palm, his dark eyes shimmering with moisture.

He looked at me with a fragile, pitiful expression.

“Did I do something wrong?

“Do you not want me anymore?

“Do you not love me anymore?”

He asked three questions in a row.

It felt like I was hearing the world’s biggest joke.

“Whether I love you or not-don’t you already know the answer to that?”

“I know, I know… but please, don’t drive me away. I won’t make you angry again…”

“Enough, Shen Zhijin!”

Seeing his bewildered and helpless state, I was so angry I laughed. I couldn’t resist poking him in the forehead. “Did you hit your head and break your brain?”

Shen Zhijin tilted his head oddly as if thinking, then nodded solemnly.

“You think I’ll believe that?” I asked.

He grabbed my wrist.

I watched coldly to see what kind of madness he was up to now.

He guided my hand to the back of his head.

In an instant, a wet, sticky sensation climbed up my fingertips. I caught a faint scent of blood.

I jerked my hand back and retreated several steps, looking down. My clean fingertips were now stained a jarring red.

It was blood!

I quickly walked behind Shen Zhijin to check his injury, feeling a surge of alarm. “Where did you hit it? Doesn’t it hurt?”

The wound looked like it had been caused by a blunt object. Scabs had formed in his hair, but the edges were soaked with fresh blood. It looked horrific.

He shook his head. “I forgot. It doesn’t hurt.”

I lost all desire to argue with him. I grabbed the keys from the table. “We’re going to the hospital.”

I didn’t want him dying in my house.

“No.”

He was unexpectedly resistant.

Shen Zhijin sat on the sofa with his eyes downcast and his lips pursed. No matter how much I tried to persuade him, he absolutely refused to go.

“Fine, then just stay here and wait to die!”

Seeing that I couldn’t kick him out and that it was thundering and raining outside, I turned around and went back to my room to sleep, deciding to deal with it tomorrow.

Whatever. It wasn’t my injury, anyway.
