Painting Enchantment - chapter 4
The scene before my eyes was mottled and intertwined.
“Speak, how did you die?”
I knelt on the cold, desolate hall floor. A murky, icy river flowed past, stretching endlessly out of sight.
On both banks of the river bloomed endless crimson demonic flowers, while ghostly blue flames flickered and drifted all around.
Suddenly, a sharp poke landed on my back.
“Hurry up and tell! The Prefect is asking how you died. Heh, are you embarrassed? So thin-skinned! Let me answer for you.”
Behind me, the Little Ghost in white cackled mischievously.
“Oh my, she has a handsome ghost Husband at home. She couldn’t resist his charms, so every night she lay with him.”
“But sleeping with a ghost shortens your lifespan! She didn’t even know that, kept tumbling with him every day, and-died!”
His mouth ran like a broken jar. I truly regretted not stuffing something in it:
“Hee hee, what kind of death? Of course, it was that kind… in bed. Hey, don’t pull me!”
I grabbed the Little Ghost by the collar.
“Shut up! What do you know!”
I glanced up at the Prefect, instantly blushing so hard I wished I could crawl into a hole.
On the high dais, the Prefect of the Yellow Springs Prefecture flipped through the Book of Fate with casual indifference.
He spoke again, just as carelessly.
“Interesting. What’s your name?”
That voice seemed to scratch at my heart, stirring up ripples.
I mumbled, “Zhou Yan.”
“Mm,” he replied.
“Zhou Yan, is there anything else you wish to say?”
I opened my mouth, about to say no.
But on the high dais, those eyes, black as ink, gazed down at me.
My nonexistent heart skipped a beat.
“Oh, there is one thing. It’s quite a coincidence-my ghost Husband…”
Almost instinctively, I blurted it out.
“He looks exactly like you, Prefect.”
