“Rumble-”

Thunder rolled closer and closer. Wind drove the torrential rain against the windows, drumming a crackling barrage on the glass.

“Ah!”

“No, Mr. Bai, d-don’t…”

“…My brother’s in the room next door, you’ve got the wrong one. Ah!”

Even in weather like this, that grating voice still slipped through the cracks in the wall, like a mosquito you couldn’t swat away. Before long it rose to a shrill pitch, pain laced with pleasure.

Yan Jinge was jolted awake by the noise, irritation spiking.

He pressed a hand to his dull-aching head and pushed himself up from the bed. In an instant, a flood of memories poured into his mind-none of them his.

At the same time, a flat, mechanical voice sounded in his head: “Mr. Yan Jinge, hello. Welcome to Rebirth. Your soul has been placed into a Small World. Please cherish this chance at rebirth, complete your tasks, and earn a new life.”

“Mm,” Yan Jinge responded, cool and nonchalant.

Rumor had it that after death, everyone got one chance at rebirth. If you completed the tasks issued by the system, you could be granted a new life. Before he died, Yan Jinge had always thought that was just some fake ad put out by the Academy of Sciences. He hadn’t expected it to be real.

His assignment was to transmigrate into the role of the scummy gong’s cast-off spouse in various Small Worlds, and take revenge on the scum man and his foxy little homewrecker-by any means necessary.

Yan Jinge turned his head, listening to the thunder, the rain, and the cries from next door as he took stock of the room he was in.

This was a bridal suite.

A bright red “Double Happiness” character was pasted on the wall. The red mandarin-duck wedding quilt over him was exquisitely made-yet at the moment, only Yan Jinge lay beneath it.

Yan Jinge’s other half, Bai Wei, was currently in the next room, joyously tangled up with Yan Jinge’s biological younger brother.

Right then, as if in competition with the storm, a sudden high-pitched scream rang out from next door.

Yan Jinge’s brows drew together ever so slightly.

This was a villa under Bai Wei’s name. By rights, the soundproofing shouldn’t be this bad, especially on a stormy night. The only reason he could hear them so clearly was that that dear little brother of his was deliberately raising his voice, wanting to drive Yan Jinge mad.

Unfortunately for him, Yan Jinge had zero interest in eavesdropping, or in storming into the next room to demand an explanation.

He pulled open the drawer beside the bed and, expressionless, fished out a box of earplugs. He put them in.

The noise dropped off sharply, allowing Yan Jinge to finally organize his memories properly.

“Tsk.”

Once he’d sorted everything out, his patience was already wearing thin.

In this Small World, the person he was playing was a bona fide rich second generation. From high school onward, he’d nursed a secret crush on a boy in his class: Bai Wei.

The Bai Family’s business ran into trouble?

He immediately handed over the little stash of savings he’d painstakingly hoarded for years.

Bai Wei was an illegitimate son and got bullied by the legitimate son from the main wife. What then?

He rounded up some people, went straight after the main wife’s son, and taught him such a lesson he never dared so much as look sideways at Bai Wei again.

Later, after they graduated from university, the original owner devoted himself even more. He willingly gave up his right of inheritance in the Yan Family and went to work as a lowly secretary in Bai Wei’s company. In the business world he gave and gave, selflessly, helping Bai Wei quickly become the country’s new rising star in technology.

From beginning to end, you could say he loved Bai Wei to the extreme-so much that he made himself completely small.

And Bai Wei? He had only ever been using him.

He stayed with the original owner because he valued the original owner’s identity and all the conveniences that came with it.

Once he’d wrung out every last drop of usefulness, for the sake of his reputation and the company’s future development, Bai Wei got engaged to him. The two never registered their marriage, never even held a banquet, and his resistance was obvious-on the very night of their engagement, not only did he not go to the original owner’s room, he also had a real, physical fling with the original owner’s most hostile blood brother.

Disgusting.

This scummy gong was really just relying on his good luck that no lightning bolt had come down to strike him, or he wouldn’t dare trample people like this.

Barefoot, Yan Jinge got out of bed, picked up his slippers by the straps, and headed out, intending to get a glass of water to settle the nausea churning in his stomach.

He’d only just moved into the Bai Family residence less than half a day ago and wasn’t familiar with the layout. He felt his way out the door, groping along the wall for a light switch, but after a while still hadn’t found one.

Suddenly, a flash of lightning split the night sky, flooding the living room with stark white light.

In that instant, Yan Jinge saw someone.

A person was standing in the corner of the living room, most of his body swallowed by the darkness.

He had no idea how long the man had been there. His face wasn’t very old and should have looked youthful, but at the moment it was twisted with a gloomy, vicious cast. His head was tipped slightly down, and his deep black eyes were fixed unblinkingly on Yan Jinge.

The lightning faded, and the living room sank back into darkness.
The man slipped back into the darkness as well.

Yan Jinge’s body went rigid.

Anyone who suddenly witnessed that would have an unsteady heartbeat, but Yan Jinge still kept a calm, composed look on his face.

This person-

What was he doing standing here?

And without making a single sound.

Was he also unable to sleep because of the noise next door?

Yan Jinge searched through the original host’s memories and recalled that this was the son of the Bai Family’s first wife, someone the original had once bullied-Bai Cheng.

He was three years younger than Bai Wei, the illegitimate child, and was currently in college.

Ever since Bai Cheng was five and his mother died of a serious illness, Bai Wei and Bai Wei’s mother had been brought into the home together. From then on, the two children were inevitably compared side by side.

Bai Cheng’s circumstances only grew more difficult.

Yan Jinge finally found the switch.

With a snap, the living room lights came on.

Bai Cheng, who had been standing in the corner just a moment ago, was already gone.

Yan Jinge didn’t care.

He poured himself a glass of water, sat down on the sofa to the side, pulled out his phone, and started making calls one after another.

“Yes, Mom, Dad. Bai Wei said he has a surprise for you today, and he asked that you come over no matter what. Yes, it is a little late right now, but he’s being so enthusiastic-I can’t exactly refuse.”

“Hello? Auntie, it’s Jinge. Sorry to disturb you in the middle of the night, but Bai Wei said there’s something he wants to talk to you about. It sounds like it’s about that piece of land in the north of the city…”

After several calls, Yan Jinge felt downright invigorated.

This Small World wasn’t big. For Yan Jinge, it was basically a beginner village: the wealthy district was all clustered together, and nobody lived far from anyone else. Before long, they arrived.

Yan Jinge opened the front door, then deliberately got up and went to the entrance to greet them.

Every single person wore a beaming smile. Even if a bit of rainwater had splashed onto their clothes, not one of them so much as frowned.

“Today really is a good day!”

“Isn’t it? Today’s Jinge and Bai Wei’s wedding day-how could it not be?”

“Hey? Why is only Jinge out here? Where’s Bai Wei? Didn’t you say he had something to see us about?”

Yan Jinge wore a perfectly polite smile. “Bai Wei is upstairs. If you don’t mind, would you come up with me?”

“That’s so embarrassing to trouble you-though it’s good to go up and take a look. After all, this is where Jinge will be living from now on. We aunts will feel more at ease,” Yan Jinge’s aunt said, affectionately clasping Yan Jinge’s hand.

That plot of land in the north of the city-she was determined to get it.

“Bai Wei’s really promising now. Jinge truly chose a wonderful partner,” his uncle added at once from the side.

Yan Jinge’s mother swept a glance over the hand being held, frowned slightly, and lowered her eyes to hide the disdain within them.

She lifted her hand to smooth the stray hair by her temple, her movements elegant, her voice gentle. “But this is the Bai Family residence. Bai Wei’s parents aren’t here, and if all of us go upstairs in such a noisy crowd… wouldn’t that be a bit improper?”

“It’s fine. You’re all my dearest family, and you’re only here because you care about me. Bai Wei has such a good temper-he definitely won’t be angry.”

Upstairs, Yan Jinge led everyone straight to a room and pushed the door open-only for it to be empty.

The crowd had been ready to welcome Bai Wei, but one look inside and everyone froze.

Yan Jinge tapped his forehead. “Ah, look at my memory. I just moved into the Bai Family house, so I’m still not familiar with the place. Bai Wei isn’t in this room-he’s next door.”

Next door?

But judging from the decorations, this was clearly the bridal suite.

The red “double happiness” character was still pasted up inside.

So why was Bai Wei staying next door?

Everyone looked at each other.

With so many people packed into the hallway, it had been loud and bustling. Now that they’d gone quiet, they could hear certain things they really shouldn’t be hearing.

Yan Jinge’s mother’s face changed, and she immediately snapped, “Yan Jinge!”

But it was already too late.

Yan Jinge reached out and pushed open the door to the room next door.

On the bed, two bodies were stacked together.

Yan Jinge’s younger brother, Yan Qingyu, clung to Bai Wei, his nails carving bloody streaks across Bai Wei’s back. His body rocked in a steady rhythm. Catching sight of Yan Jinge standing in the doorway from the corner of his eye, he felt smug-and immediately cried out even harder, putting on an even more shameless performance.

The sounds instantly carried to everyone.

In that moment, everyone in the hallway understood exactly what was happening, and their expressions shifted in all kinds of ways.
