Bai Cheng’s little trick had been seen through. Humiliated and angry, he pursed his lips and remained silent, ignoring Yan Jinge for the rest of the day.

At Nirvana.

Secretary Wang stared down at her phone, looking at the two messages sent by President Bai.

…How exactly had President Yan offended him?

Was it serious?

What stage had the relationship between the two of them actually reached?

Clearly, he had said earlier to let the Yan Corporation off the hook… but then came the order to take out Yan Jinge. Was it just President Bai speaking in anger, something he’d forget in a moment? Or would he stay angry until he actually did something to vent his frustration?

A flurry of information flashed through the secretary’s mind.

She had been with Bai Cheng for a long time and knew his moods were unpredictable. A plan decided one moment could be completely overturned the next, which was why she hadn’t jumped to any conclusions immediately.

Perhaps it was better to wait until President Bai returned.

As Secretary Wang was thinking idly, she saw an assistant approach carrying a large stack of documents, placing them on the desk. “Sister Wang, these are all the files President Bai just ordered me to bring over. Please take a look.”

Secretary Wang reached out and flipped through them. Looking at the codes marked in the top right corner, they were all related to Rongding Technology. There was nothing regarding the Yan Group at all. She understood immediately.

It seemed it was just a momentary outburst that had already passed.

-She didn’t even have the tools from President Bai to carry out the deed, so how was she supposed to take out Yan Jinge?

…

Two days passed in a flash.

While the label of “scumbag” would affect Rongding’s stock price after its IPO, it wasn’t the sole metric for measuring the company’s products or its future. It wasn’t beyond remedy.

However, during the quiet period, it was difficult for Rongding to issue an official denial. They could only use third parties to leak some inside information.

Soon, news that Rongding was about to launch a new product began to circulate in small circles.

“Ahhh, I’m so looking forward to it!”

“Is this for real? I wonder what they’re releasing this time. The robot vacuum I bought from them last time looks great and performs even better. My parents and my cat both love it!”

“I didn’t care much when I first saw the news, but as soon as I saw the new release was from Rongding? I got excited instantly! Go, go, go, sisters! My wallet is already itching!”

“Our two companies are currently targeting similar markets, and both are launching new mobile phones this period. Rongding likely plans to go head-to-head with us to grab market share immediately after they go public.”

Yan Wei held a tablet, tapping on the content displayed. He frowned and asked, “Jinge, what do you think?”

Yan Jinge replied, “No need to worry. Our product this time is quite good.”

Quite good…

When Yan Wei heard this evaluation, his heart skipped a beat with uncertainty. However, remembering what Yan Jinge had previously revealed to him, he ultimately decided to trust his son. He nodded and said, “If the actual results match the product concept you showed me before, then we’ve definitely won. I’m just afraid something might go wrong at the last minute… Have you overcome the hurdles for that technology yet?”

Yan Jinge smiled. “Of course. It’s currently in the final stages.”

Although the Original Host had a low EQ and had fallen straight into a scumbag’s trap, he was a very capable and creative person in his professional field.

He had many ideas in his head but hadn’t had the chance to put them into practice. After Yan Jinge took over the Original Host’s body, he immediately possessed all his memories and abilities. Combined with the system’s assistance, he naturally achieved twice the result with half the effort.

To settle things quickly and complete the task, Yan Jinge had simply utilized a technology that wouldn’t be relatively mature for another eight years in this collaboration with Nirvana.

Currently, Yan Jinge had already successfully applied for the patent.

This technology had been developed in secret. Aside from Yan Wei and the members of the technical department who had signed non-disclosure agreements, no one else knew about it-even Bai Cheng was kept in the dark.

However, once the truth came out, Bai Cheng and his company certainly wouldn’t be the ones losing out.

“I still feel that using this technology in this collaborative project lets Nirvana off too easily…” Yan Wei sighed softly.

Yan Jinge didn’t mind.

In his view, this entire world was fictional, and the people around him were basically NPCs. As long as he didn’t let the scumbag benefit, it felt the same regardless of who else did.

Besides, Bai Cheng had technically helped the Original Host by gathering information on the scumbag and sending it to him.

-Regardless of Bai Cheng’s motives, at least this action sat well with Yan Jinge.

Yan Jinge walked out of Yan Wei’s office. Just as he went downstairs, an assistant came toward him. “Manager Yan, the front desk called. They said a lady claiming to be Bai Wei’s Mother wants to see you. The front desk stopped her, but she refuses to leave, saying she won’t go until she sees you. Because her identity is somewhat sensitive, the front desk asked me to get your opinion.”

Yan Jinge said, “No appointment, no meeting.”

He added, “In the future, you don’t need to ask me about any person or matter related to Bai Wei. Just follow the standard regulations. I no longer have any relationship with Bai Wei.”

The assistant blinked. “Understood.” She ran off to relay the message.

Bai Wei’s Mother…

Yan Jinge remembered her vividly.

-Back then, no matter how humble the Original Host’s attitude was toward her, he never gained any favor and was constantly subjected to all sorts of cold mockery and sarcasm.

Although this lady came from a humble background and was raised in an ordinary family, she was exceptionally beautiful. She had been raised like a princess since childhood, resulting in a spoiled temperament and a snobbish attitude.
She had been Bai Cheng’s father’s secret mistress since university, giving birth to Bai Wei even before Bai Cheng’s mother could have a child.

Her status rose because of her son, and combined with her immense patience, she lived secretly in a villa arranged by the elder Mr. Bai. She was always gentle and attentive toward him, handling everything with perfect grace. Finally, she outlasted Bai Cheng’s mother, and after the latter passed away, she officially moved into the Bai Family home with Bai Wei.

Bai Wei’s Mother was extremely devoted to her precious son.

She was single-mindedly focused on her plan to have Bai Wei marry a wealthy socialite to rid their bloodline of its “common” elements. Naturally, she never had a kind word for the male Original Host and even secretly cursed him for leading Bai Wei astray.

Her visit today certainly wouldn’t be for anything good.

Yan Jinge would have to be a fool to go downstairs and meet her.

Entering the office, Yan Jinge immediately saw Bai Cheng lounging with his legs crossed, playing on his phone.

Thinking of the person downstairs, he said, “Don’t leave right after work. I’m treating you to dinner.”

Although Yan Jinge didn’t mention any names, he and Bai Cheng were the only two people in the office. Bai Cheng looked up, his dark eyes once again fixed on Yan Jinge as he looked him up and down. “What are you up to?”

When someone is being unusually kind, they must have an ulterior motive.

“Can’t I treat you to a meal for no reason?” Yan Jinge thought for a moment. “Then consider it a thank-you for taking down Rongding…”

“Wait.” Bai Cheng interrupted Yan Jinge without hesitation. “I took down Rongding for myself, not for you.” He said coldly, “That was my own decision and has nothing to do with anyone else.”

Something occurred to him, and he let out a mocking sneer. “You couldn’t possibly be so conceited as to think I like you, and that’s why I deliberately approached you as the project lead? And that taking down Rongding was my way of getting revenge for you?”

Yan Jinge: “?”

Yan Jinge hadn’t thought that at all.

He had just been looking for a casual excuse, but when he turned to look, he saw Bai Cheng’s face full of disgust, clearly convinced that this was Yan Jinge’s true thought.

Yan Jinge couldn’t help but shake his head.

Kids really did overthink things.

They say a three-year age difference is a generation gap. Even though he was only two years older than Bai Cheng, it felt like there were two generation gaps between them.

Yan Jinge didn’t bother explaining. He felt that even if he did, Bai Cheng wouldn’t believe him, so he didn’t waste his breath. After all, this guy was just an NPC in the Resurrection Game.

Yan Jinge shrugged. “So, are you going or not?”

Bai Cheng stared intently at Yan Jinge.

Two hours later, Bai Cheng said impatiently, “Still not done?”

Yan Jinge replied leisurely, “Just a little bit more. What’s the rush?”

Once Yan Jinge finished the work at hand, he checked the time-it was already an hour and a half past the end of the workday. That lady probably couldn’t wait that long.

Only then did he stand up and stretch his body slightly. “Sorry for the wait. Let’s go. What do you want to eat?”

Bai Cheng said irritably, “Whatever.”

Yan Jinge reached out to lock the office. “Then let’s have hotpot. You seemed to like it quite a bit during the last team dinner.”

Bai Cheng stood beside Yan Jinge at a moderate distance. He had been casually looking at the scenery in the distance, but upon hearing this, he turned to glance at Yan Jinge with a strange look in his eyes.

He lowered his head, staring at the tips of his shoes, and gave a casual “Mm.”

They took the elevator down to the parking lot together.

Bai Cheng drove.

Yan Jinge sat in the passenger seat, buckled his seatbelt, and looked down to find a hotpot restaurant. “It’s getting late, let’s find somewhere close…”

As he spoke, Bai Cheng suddenly jerked the steering wheel.

Yan Jinge’s body immediately lurched to the side, and he nearly dropped his phone. “…What happened?”

Bai Cheng’s expression was cold. “Nothing.”

Bai Cheng stepped on the gas, and the car roared out of the parking lot. Through the window, Yan Jinge caught a fleeting glimpse of a panicked woman in a navy blue dress.

Yan Jinge immediately guessed her identity and couldn’t help but frown.

It had been so long since work ended; why hadn’t she left yet?

Feeling a bit displeased, he sent a message to his assistant: [Next time Bai Wei’s Mother comes, just have security escort her out.]

Assistant: [Understood.]

Bai Cheng’s expression was very sour. Only after the car had traveled some distance did he turn and ask calmly, “Which way?”

Yan Jinge: “I’ll turn on the navigation.”

Bai Cheng remained in a low mood throughout the drive, and neither of them spoke much. When they arrived at the hotpot restaurant, Bai Cheng went to park while Yan Jinge’s number was called just in time. A server led them to their seats.

Yan Jinge didn’t stand on ceremony with Bai Cheng. He ordered a bunch of things he liked first before handing the tablet to Bai Cheng.

Bai Cheng looked down at the screen and suddenly said, “Thanks.”

Bai Cheng wasn’t stupid.

If Bai Wei’s Mother came to find Yan Jinge and he refused to see her, she would sit in the lobby and wait for him like a predator waiting for its prey.

Bai Cheng was picked up and dropped off by a driver every day, so he would inevitably pass the entrance after work. If they met and that woman saw Bai Cheng at Yan Jinge’s company, there was no telling what she might suspect.

That was why Yan Jinge had invited him to dinner and deliberately stalled for an hour and a half-to avoid a confrontation between him and Bai Wei’s Mother.

Even if the result wasn’t entirely perfect.

Yan Jinge was pouring lemon water for Bai Cheng. Hearing his words, his expression remained neutral as he said casually, “It’s nothing. You’re just a little brother to me.”

Author’s Note:

Bai Cheng slowly types out a question mark.
