Ning Zhuyun rose gracefully and nodded. “Since the matter’s settled and it’s already so late, let’s call it a night. When we have time, come over to my place and we’ll get together again.”

As she spoke, she shot Yan Qingyu a look.

Seeing Ning Zhuyun heading out, Yan Qingyu hurried after her. He bit his pale lower lip, limping as he walked. Passing in front of everyone, he felt even more like some caged ape on display.

For a while, Yan Qingyu felt he had no face left to show his relatives.

The moment they stepped out the door, Ning Zhuyun grabbed Yan Qingyu by the collar and yanked him forward. She was clearly furious, though she still kept up her elegant demeanor. She only ground out, “You’re kneeling when we get back.”

Yan Qingyu didn’t dare breathe too loudly. “Yes.”

He agreed obediently, but he’d been spoiled since childhood, not the type to read the room and keep his mouth shut. Tears pattered down his cheeks. He shuffled forward a couple of quick little steps, tugged at the corner of Ning Zhuyun’s jacket, and whispered, “Mom, I really didn’t know… I was sleeping just fine, it was Bai Wei who-”

“Enough.”

Ning Zhuyun’s voice was cold. “Save that line for fooling other people.”

Yan Qingyu truly had nothing to say to that.

Ning Zhuyun thought for a moment, then added, “When we get back, have the servants move your things out of Jinge’s room. He’ll be coming home to live tonight.”

Yan Qingyu mumbled his assent, a flash of hatred flickering in his eyes.

Why?

Why was Yan Jinge always more important than him at home? Why was his room bigger than his, why was he subjected to stricter discipline… Even his current status as heir only came to him because Yan Jinge didn’t want it anymore.

He was determined to steal Yan Jinge’s things.

In the living room.

Yan Jinge’s aunt sidled up to him. “Jinge, about that plot of land you mentioned on the phone before…”

Yan Jinge let out a quiet laugh. “Don’t worry, Auntie. I don’t go back on my word.”

Though she still had her doubts, since Yan Jinge had said as much, his aunt couldn’t very well slap his face in public by saying she didn’t believe him. She could only praise him instead. “That’s true, Jinge has always been reliable. Then I’ll head out first. You can get in touch with your aunt later?”

“Okay.”

Yan Jinge’s uncle was nowhere near as composed. As soon as they stepped outside, he grabbed his wife’s arm. “Can he really pull this off? Don’t let it end with us running this whole trip for nothing. In this pouring rain…”

His aunt was silent for a long moment, then said perfunctorily, “We’ll see.”

Once everyone was sent off, Yan Jinge returned to the bedroom and started packing.

Outside, the thunder had faded. Only the torrential rain remained, drumming against the leaves outside the window with a sharp patter.

Staring at the wardrobe crammed full of clothes, Yan Jinge frowned.

The original owner really was in deep with Bai Wei. They were only engaged, yet he’d already moved into the Bai Family residence and had basically hauled his entire wardrobe over, acting like he was never leaving.

Too passive.

Yan Jinge shook his head and only packed a few outfits that he found acceptable. He planned to throw the rest out. He put all his personal belongings into a suitcase, straightened up, rolled his neck, and called the driver.

Before long, his phone buzzed. Yan Jinge picked up his suitcase and headed out.

As soon as he reached the living room, he suddenly felt a prickling sensation on his back.

He turned and saw Bai Wei’s younger brother, Bai Cheng, with his bedroom door cracked just a sliver, peeking out at him.

This kid…

Why did he always do such creepy things?

If he didn’t know what kind of story he’d landed in, Yan Jinge would’ve thought he’d entered a horror scenario.

Yan Jinge simply called out openly, “Bai Cheng?”

With a bang, the door slammed shut.

Standing where he was, Yan Jinge was baffled. Still, there was bad blood between him and Bai Cheng-the original owner had given the younger boy trouble more than once. It was only normal Bai Cheng didn’t want to talk to him.

He didn’t dwell on it and left with his suitcase.

The driver was waiting at the door with an umbrella. He first took the suitcase, then held the umbrella to shield Yan Jinge as he got into the car. After that, he jogged back through the rain to fetch the suitcase and stowed it in the trunk.

The Yan Family lived in the same gated community. The driver pulled out and drove them home; the whole trip took less than ten minutes.

The butler came forward under a black umbrella and opened the car door. “Young Master Yan, welcome home.”

“Mm.”

Yan Jinge responded, then instructed, “Tomorrow, take some people over to the Bai Family and throw out everything I left there. You can recognize my things, right?”

There was a hint of surprise in the butler’s eyes, but he quickly smoothed it over. “I can.”

“If you can’t, that’s fine too. Just toss whatever. If Bai Wei kicks up a fuss, ignore him. Tell him to come find me.”

The butler stared and nodded. “Understood.”

In the past, the young master would get all worked up over anything to do with Bai Wei. Now his tone was offhand, and he even said that if Bai Wei made a scene, they didn’t need to bother with him…

Had he really changed?

The butler had practically watched Yan Jinge grow up, and he felt a bit gratified. He added, “Young Master Yan, sir is inside as well. His mood wasn’t too good when he came back today. Please be considerate.”

He couldn’t say much more than that.

Yan Jinge paused mid-step and turned to look at the butler.

The butler was getting on in years and had served the Yan Family for nearly twenty years. His hair was going gray. As he held the umbrella for Yan Jinge, most of it tilted toward the young man’s side, leaving a large patch of his own shoulder soaked through.
Yan Jinge dipped his head. “Thanks. Go change.”

“No need to thank me. It’s what I’m supposed to do.” The butler smiled mildly. Then, for once, he said something extra: “He’s your father. He definitely loves you.”

“Mm.” Yan Jinge walked into the Yan Family home.

His father was Yan Wei.

Just like the name suggested, he looked stern.

Even without anger, he carried a heavy, intimidating presence.

While Yan Jinge was in the entryway changing his shoes, Yan Wei sat on the sofa.

It was as if he’d been waiting for Yan Jinge to come back.

And yet he didn’t even look at him.

His brow stayed furrowed.

His mouth was set in a hard line, the corners turned down.

When his gaze finally swept over, there was anger hidden in his eyes.

Yan Jinge finished putting on his slippers and turned around.

He called out naturally, “Dad. I’m home.”

Yan Wei: “…”

All the scolding Yan Wei had been holding in his chest stopped cold.

It had been a long time since he’d heard Yan Jinge say the word “Dad.”

Yan Wei couldn’t help staring at him for a long moment.

Yan Jinge looked exhausted.

So exhausted he rubbed at his eyes like he was about to fall asleep on his feet.

Yan Wei remembered what Ning Zhuyun had told him earlier when she returned.

He also noticed how late it was.

In the end, he only grunted a short “Mm” and said, “Go upstairs and sleep.”

Yan Jinge hesitated. “Dad…”

Yan Wei cut him off immediately. “Whatever it is, we’ll talk tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

Yan Jinge’s eyes curved slightly.

He looked very obedient.

He said goodbye to Yan Wei and headed upstairs, following the layout from memory.

He intended to take a hot shower.

Then he would sleep.

He wanted to loosen up and properly rest.

But the moment he pushed open his bedroom door, he froze.

There was someone on his bed.

He stepped closer.

It was Yan Qingyu.

Yan Jinge was so furious he nearly laughed.

Ning Zhuyun had brought Yan Qingyu back from the Bai Family.

Only a little over ten minutes had passed.

There was no way Yan Qingyu could have washed up and climbed into bed and fallen asleep that fast.

Besides.

Yan Wei downstairs had clearly been waiting.

The Yan Family definitely knew Yan Jinge was sleeping at home tonight.

So how could they allow Yan Qingyu to sleep in Yan Jinge’s room?

Yan Jinge’s face went blank.

He walked over.

He flipped the blanket back.

Yan Qingyu really was faking.

He yelped, “Ah!” and sat bolt upright.

His eyes went wide. “What are you doing?!”

Yan Jinge didn’t even bring up the fact that Yan Qingyu was in his bed.

He only asked, “What did you call Bai Wei today at the Bai Family’s place?”

Yan Qingyu froze.

He had been pretending to sleep on purpose.

He wanted to disgust Yan Jinge.

He’d heard the door open downstairs.

He’d already planned the whole thing.

He even thought out what he’d say.

If Yan Jinge asked why he was here.

If Yan Jinge questioned him about Bai Wei.

He had lines ready.

But Yan Jinge didn’t follow the usual script.

Instead, he asked a completely different question.

Yan Qingyu hadn’t decided what to answer yet.

Yan Jinge grabbed his arm.

Yan Jinge’s grip was strong.

He forced Yan Qingyu down onto the bed.

With one hand, he flipped Yan Qingyu over.

Yan Qingyu’s pajama pants were loose.

Yan Jinge yanked them down.

Then-smack.

A hard slap landed on Yan Qingyu’s backside.

Yan Qingyu had already been feeling uncomfortable because of what happened with Bai Wei.

Now, being hit like this, it wasn’t just physical pain.

It was humiliation.

A shame that burned straight through him.

He immediately started screaming.

“What are you doing-”

“Let go of me-ah! Yan Jinge!”

His voice was so loud it felt like it could pierce the beams of the house.

“What’s going on?”

Not even three minutes later, Ning Zhuyun appeared in the doorway.

A sheet mask covered her face.

On the surface, she looked calm.

Inside, she was cursing up a storm.

The first thing she saw was Yan Qingyu in pajamas.

In Yan Jinge’s room.

On Yan Jinge’s bed.

And Yan Jinge was right there, spanking him.

Ning Zhuyun took a deep breath.

She’d told Yan Qingyu already.

Yan Jinge was coming back to sleep here tonight.

Yan Qingyu had agreed so nicely.

So why was he being this disobedient?

Then she remembered something else.

At the Bai Family’s place earlier, Yan Qingyu had kept calling Bai Wei “brother-in-law.”

Over and over.

That form of address really was inappropriate.

Ning Zhuyun frowned.

In the end, she decided not to interfere.

She turned and left.

“Mom-”

Yan Qingyu’s voice went hoarse from crying.

He still couldn’t call Ning Zhuyun back.

Yan Jinge, as if he hadn’t heard any of it, continued at his own pace.

Each time he brought his hand down, he paused.

Then he asked, “Do you know how to address people properly from now on?”

Another slap.

A pause.

“Do you know?”

Yan Qingyu sobbed.

He thrashed.

But Yan Jinge held him down.

He couldn’t get free.

Twenty minutes later.

Yan Qingyu had cried until the bedsheets were damp.

He’d been beaten until all his attitude was gone.

His steps were even more awkward than before.

He held his waist, moving slowly as he shuffled out of Yan Jinge’s room.

From behind him, Yan Jinge’s voice drifted out again.

“Do you know how to address people properly from now on?”

“I know.”

Yan Qingyu answered in utter humiliation.

“You’re my real brother.

From now on, when I see Bai Wei again, I’ll call him sister-in-law.”

Yan Jinge said, “Mm?”

Yan Qingyu immediately corrected himself.

“Ex-sister-in-law!

You already dumped him!

He doesn’t deserve to be called that by me!”

Yan Jinge drawled lazily, “Fine. Go sleep.”

He called a servant over.

He had them change the sheets and the duvet cover.

Then he turned and went into the bathroom.

He took a long, comfortable shower.

When he came out again, the servant was already gone.

Yan Jinge burrowed into the dry, warm bedding.

That night, he slept incredibly well.

Next door, Yan Qingyu had nightmares all night.

In every one of them, Yan Jinge was hitting him.

The next morning.

Yan Jinge ate breakfast with the family.

Afterward, he had a lawyer come to the Yan Family home.

He had them list out everything he’d given Bai Wei over the years.

Every gift.

Every transfer.

All the money moved through the bank.

He was getting it back.
