Chapter 35

Yan Jinge had very little experience with romance, but he knew for a fact that he would never love someone to the point of life and death-he couldn’t even fathom such a scenario.

However, since it was a harmless setting and the subject was such a cute Familiar, he decided to let it slide.

Besides, he couldn’t find a complaint button anyway.

Yan Jinge said calmly, “I have no memory of a past life. I live in this life, so I should live according to the circumstances of this life.”

“You don’t need to have them. You just need to know that you are my lover. Never mind the past life; even in this life, by marrying Third Master, you’ve essentially married me.”

Bai Cheng snorted. “If I hear you tell Xiaohua to call me ‘Brother’ one more time, I’ll…”

He paused and threatened, “I’ll crawl into your bed right in front of Xiaohua and let him see exactly what our relationship is!” It was hard to tell if the pause was for dramatic effect or out of embarrassment.

Yan Jinge: “…”

Third Master Jing: “…”

Yan Jinge coughed softly and shot a sidelong glance at Third Master Jing. “What on earth have you been teaching him?” Although his tone was flat, there was a hint of reproach in it.

It sounded almost like flirting.

“…I didn’t. He just knows these things.”

As Third Master Jing spoke, he lowered his gaze and tapped his fingers lightly on the armrest of his wheelchair. He had half a sentence left, but looking at Yan Jinge, he couldn’t bring himself to say it.

Forget it.

Better to let Yan Jinge discover it for himself later.

“I didn’t expect to find Third Master Jing hiding here to relax. You certainly made me look for you.”

An elderly voice rang out.

Yan Jinge looked up to see an older man walking toward them, followed by Wen Yibin. The two shared similar features, making it obvious that this was the host of the birthday banquet-Wen Yibin’s father, Wen Changming.

Wen Changming’s gaze swept over Yan Jinge, noting the matching suits the two were wearing. He understood the situation immediately but asked anyway, “And this is-”

“My lover, Yan Jinge.”

Third Master Jing’s tone was natural. “He doesn’t like crowds, so I didn’t take him to see you earlier. Jinge, this is Wen Changming. You can just call him ‘Brother’.”

Yan Jinge said very earnestly, “I wish Brother Changming a life as vast as the Eastern Sea and longevity as great as the Southern Mountains.”

Wen Changming chuckled. “Thank you.”

Wen Yibin, standing behind Wen Changming: “…”

Although he already knew Yan Jinge had a partner and that the partner was Third Master Jing, he was still immersed in his feelings of goodwill toward Yan Jinge.

Suddenly, the person he was interested in was calling his father “Brother,” which made Wen Yibin feel quite awkward.

Fortunately, no one else present knew about his feelings.

Wen Yibin maintained a gentle smile on his face.

Standing slightly behind Wen Changming, he leaned in and recounted the story of how the Familiar had gone missing and was found by Yan Jinge.

Wen Changming, who hadn’t paid much attention to Yan Jinge initially, took a few more looks at him upon hearing this.

Yan Jinge smiled and waved it off. “It was just a small favor, Mr. Wen. There’s no need to keep mentioning it.”

They stood together and chatted.

Third Master Jing and Wen Changming talked about business matters, which made Yan Jinge feel a bit drowsy. Coincidentally, Wen Yibin suggested they go sit nearby, and Yan Jinge agreed.

The two of them started a conversation about the Familiar and had a very pleasant chat.

However, Wen Yibin wasn’t at the banquet just to chat; he was soon called away by Wen Changming to continue meeting other business associates.

“Mr. Yan, I’ll take my leave now,” Wen Yibin said with a slight nod.

He walked ahead with Wen Changming following.

Wen Changming let out a soft sigh and turned his head. “That Familiar by Third Master Jing’s side is the strongest of this generation, a true prodigy. I originally invited him here hoping to set the two of you up, but I didn’t expect him to already have someone else. I suppose it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Wen Yibin: “…”

…

The banquet was nearing its end.

Third Master Jing toyed with Yan Jinge’s hand. “Are you tired? Shall we go back?”

Yan Jinge said listlessly, “I am a bit sleepy, but I still have an appointment to meet Jing Wenjie. If you want to leave, you can go back first and let Bai Cheng stay with me.”

Hearing Yan Jinge mention Jing Wenjie so naturally, Third Master Jing couldn’t help but turn to look at him.

He pursed his lips. “Fine.”

Third Master Jing’s grip on Yan Jinge’s fingers tightened slightly. After a moment, he asked in a flat tone, “Are you coming back tonight?”

Watching the crowd at the banquet, Third Master Jing thought nonchalantly that if Yan Jinge didn’t return, he would kill Jing Wenjie, break Yan Jinge’s legs, and tie him to the bed-

Yan Jinge was startled. “…What are you thinking? How could I not come back? Didn’t Bai Cheng tell you? I’m going to get the third dose of the reagent. I’ll be back as soon as I have it.”

“…Mm.”

Third Master Jing’s raven-like eyelashes lowered, and he said nothing more.

[Jinge? I’m in the small garden. Come out for a moment.]

His phone vibrated. Yan Jinge took a look and informed Third Master Jing.

Just as he stood up, he remembered something and moved Xiaohua from his shoulder to Third Master Jing’s. “Watch Xiaohua for a bit. It’s not appropriate for him to meet Jing Wenjie.”

Third Master Jing: “…Alright.”

His body stiffened as he spoke. Once Yan Jinge had left, he took Xiaohua down and cupped him in his palm.

Xiaohua: *shivering.jpg*

Yan Jinge walked to the small garden Jing Wenjie had mentioned.

At night, the garden was lit by only a few lamps, and the surroundings were dim. Even the moon in the sky was hidden behind the clouds, making it a perfect spot for a secret tryst.

As soon as Jing Wenjie saw Yan Jinge, he stepped closer and made a move to take his hand. “You’re here.”

Yan Jinge gave Jing Wenjie a cool look. Showing no regard for the other man’s feelings, he dodged the hand and got straight to the point. “Where’s the third reagent? Give it to me quickly so I can finish the job.”
“…In such a hurry?”

Jing Wenjie watched Yan Jinge pull away from him, his expression darkening. “I thought you and Third Master Jing were on great terms. I didn’t expect you to be so eager to get rid of him behind his back.”

“Mhm.”

Yan Jinge gave a noncommittal response without offering an explanation. He asked again, “Where is the medicine?”

Jing Wenjie, however, showed no intention of handing over the drug in his hand.

He said coldly, “Yan Jinge.”

Yan Jinge arched an eyebrow.

He sensed something unusual.

In the past, whenever Jing Wenjie and Yan Jinge were alone, Wenjie would always call him “Jinge” to sound intimate. He rarely used Yan Jinge’s full name unless he was about to interrogate him.

Had Jing Wenjie discovered something?

Sure enough, in the next second, Jing Wenjie demanded, “Do you take me for a fool? Yan Jinge, I trusted you so much, and this is how you treat me? You actually conspired with the Third Master to frame me! Tell me, were you the one who made my Familiar disappear?”

Yan Jinge remained silent.

Jing Wenjie’s face didn’t show the typical signs of an angry person; it was only when he mentioned his “Familiar” that he displayed a hint of genuine anxiety.

Acting?

As if he were the only one who knew how to play a part.

Yan Jinge stood quietly in place. After a moment, a single tear rolled down his cheek. He whispered, “Jing Wenjie, is this how you doubt me?”

“Your Familiar is gone, but what does that have to do with me? How can you slander me like this?! I’ve been devoted to you. I did whatever you said, whatever you asked of me, and what is the result? You actually suspect me? You say I teamed up with your uncle to frame you? On what grounds? Do you have any evidence? Bring it out then! Let me see exactly how I framed you!”

By the end, Yan Jinge’s voice had grown louder.

Fearing that someone nearby might discover their meeting, Jing Wenjie hurriedly reached out to cover Yan Jinge’s mouth. However, Yan Jinge took two steps back, looking at him with eyes full of disappointment.

His voice was much steadier now, though the tears continued to flow. “Don’t come near me. I find you disgusting.”

Jing Wenjie was struck speechless.

His heart suddenly felt as though it were being squeezed by a pair of giant hands.

He truly didn’t have any evidence for what he had just said. It was mainly because he couldn’t find his Familiar and Yan Jinge’s attitude had changed so drastically that he had tried to bluff him.

He hadn’t expected to force such a heartfelt confession out of Yan Jinge.

But didn’t this prove that Yan Jinge still had feelings for him?

Jing Wenjie thought about how many people had tried to push partners onto Third Master Jing, only to be ignored-yet the man had accepted Yan Jinge alone. He thought about how, after not seeing Wen Yibin for so long, Wen Yibin had told him he’d fallen in love with Yan Jinge at first sight before they even had time to exchange pleasantries.

He thought of the smile Yan Jinge had shown him.

He thought of Yan Jinge-

A fire seemed to ignite in Jing Wenjie’s chest.

He felt a reckless urge to simply take Yan Jinge and elope. But as soon as the thought emerged, it startled him.

What was happening?

The person he loved was clearly Wen Yibin. Why would he think about taking Yan Jinge away?

Could it be…

That he had actually fallen for Yan Jinge during this time?

“You… don’t cry. Just now, I was only…”

Jing Wenjie felt lost. He had many things to say to Yan Jinge, but for a moment, he didn’t know how to explain himself.

He had sounded so angry just now; Yan Jinge must have been frightened into laying his heart bare, showing the feelings he had been keeping hidden.

Thinking this way filled Jing Wenjie with a sense of satisfaction and smugness.

The person Wen Yibin fell for at first sight, and the person Third Master Jing was willing to marry, happened to love him-and loved him to death.

If Third Master Jing found out, wouldn’t he be fuming?

If Wen Yibin found out, wouldn’t he be dying of envy?

The humiliation he had suffered at the hands of Third Master Jing was instantly tossed to the back of his mind.

Jing Wenjie couldn’t help but let his lips curl into a wide grin.

Just as he was about to comfort Yan Jinge, he suddenly saw the other man look up expressionlessly and let out a low chuckle. “This is what you wanted me to say, isn’t it?”

Jing Wenjie froze. “Wh-what?”

Yan Jinge’s gaze was ice-cold, the previous pain and heartache completely vanished. Before Jing Wenjie could react, Yan Jinge raised a foot and kicked him squarely! Caught off guard, Jing Wenjie tumbled into the nearby bushes, his face still blank with confusion as he fell.

Yan Jinge strolled over with a leisurely pace.

He stepped onto Jing Wenjie’s chest and leaned down, his beautiful green eyes narrowed and filled with indifference. He reached into Jing Wenjie’s pocket and, as expected, found a perfectly packaged vial of medicine.

It was identical to the one Jing Wenjie had given him before.

“Did you really think I still liked you?”

Yan Jinge toyed with the vial in his hand, a playful look on his face.

Jing Wenjie tried to get up, but he felt as though his body were being controlled, pinned to the ground and unable to move. His face turned pale. Amidst his panic and unease, there was still a hint of disbelief. He asked, “What do you mean?”

Yan Jinge said in a measured tone, “Do you really think a scumbag like you deserves to be loved?”
