Page after page of statements were printed out. Together with all the saved receipts, they formed a thick stack.

The original Yan Jinge hadn’t been sending things to Bai Wei every single day, but he had started crushing on Bai Wei back in high school. After all those years, the number of gifts was staggering-and none of them were cheap.

-Bai Wei would never accept anything inexpensive.

Back when the original Yan Jinge and Bai Wei had been dating for their one-year anniversary, Yan had wanted to give Bai Wei a surprise.

He’d decided to painstakingly make a journal by hand.

Yan kept a diary as a habit. From the first day they started dating to their one-year mark, he wrote down every warm little detail of every single day.

He pasted in photos, dug out all sorts of mementos to tuck in between the pages. The thick notebook took him a full month to complete. On top of his classes, he was basically only sleeping four hours a night.

Finally, he managed to finish the journal in time for their anniversary and gave it to Bai Wei.

He’d hoped that the always indifferent Bai Wei would see his sincerity and respond in kind.

But Bai Wei only flipped through it a couple of times, then tossed it onto the table.

Bai Wei casually smoothed his hair and said, “What’s the point of making something like this? It’s a waste of time and completely useless. I thought you were going to buy me that watch I had my eye on last time.”

Yan had felt a stab of grievance, but he didn’t say anything. He just turned around and rushed to the store to swipe his card.

Before midnight, he’d fastened the watch Bai Wei had been pining for onto Bai Wei’s wrist.

The watch cost over seven hundred thousand. It was everything Yan had saved for years to start a business after graduation. He emptied it all out and only got a perfunctory kiss on the forehead from Bai Wei in return.

And even then, the original Yan had floated on air for a whole week.

Yan Jinge lowered his eyes.

“Mr. Yan? Please take a look…”

Yan Jinge came back to himself. “Mm. Is everything sorted?”

“Yes. We traced everything from the start of your relationship in university up to this engagement. The total comes to about thirty-six million. The corresponding transfer dates and receipts for all the gifts have all been organized. Please check if there’s anything we missed.”

Yan Jinge flipped through it casually. “That should be about it. Make sure you back up the contract, and take a few bodyguards with you. If he refuses to listen, tell him to come to me. If necessary, don’t bother arguing-just file a lawsuit directly.”

“Yes.” The lawyer agreed, couldn’t help giving Yan Jinge a few more looks, then left with three assistants in tow.

After some time apart, Yan Jinge had completely transformed; he now carried the aura of someone at the top.

Then again, he was born into the Yan Family. Even if he’d acted like he’d been hexed when it came to Bai Wei before, someone like him-once he stepped out of the whirlpool of love-would immediately regain his former sharpness.

Bai Wei was the strange one.

With the Yan Family as such a powerful backing, if he’d just treated Yan Jinge properly, how could he not have soared to the top in the future? Only Bai Wei would dare offend someone like this just because he relied on Yan Jinge’s feelings for him.

Too bad the car had overturned now.

The lawyer had barely walked out the front door when Yan Jinge’s phone started ringing.

He’d just been about to go lie down for a nap. Frowning, he glanced at the screen and saw it was a call from the secretary at Bai Wei’s company.

This secretary held the same rank as Yan in the company.

She was determined to marry into high society and had tried more than once to secretly seduce Bai Wei, the tall, handsome company director. But Bai Wei didn’t care for her, so she’d never been able to climb up.

The fish refused to bite, and the secretary grew anxious. Every time she looked at Yan, who was dating Bai Wei, he was like a thorn in her eye. Her attitude toward him was always terrible.

Yan had been putting up with her for a long time. He’d gotten angry before and wanted Bai Wei to fire her, but in recent years Bai Wei had become increasingly impatient with him, feeling that Yan was bossing him around. Naturally, he chose to go against Yan on purpose.

The more Yan insisted she be fired, the more Bai Wei kept her.

The secretary, thinking Bai Wei was also interested in her, grew even more arrogant.

As soon as the call connected, the secretary launched into a tirade: “Yan Jinge, where are you? Do you even know what time it is? You still don’t bother coming to work? President Bai is already in his office waiting. Is the company paying you for nothing?”

Yan Jinge let out a soft laugh.

“Are you Bai Wei’s dog or something? You bark awfully loud.”

He drawled, “Dogs really do take after their owners.”

The secretary froze, her voice going shrill. “What did you just say to me? How can you be so uncivilized? Believe it or not, I’ll have President Bai fire you!”

That last part was pure bluster.

She didn’t have that kind of authority.

But scaring Yan a little would be nice.

She’d thought he would panic. Instead, all Yan said was, “Please hold.”

Then he opened his laptop and, with a single click, sent the resignation letter Lawyer Fang had drafted for him. “Okay. As of one second ago, I am no longer an employee of your esteemed company.”

“What are you talking about? You resigned? Even if you resign, you have to submit an application one month in advance-”

“Sorry, but your company has been in arrears with my salary for… a full two years and one month. Under the law, I have the right to unilaterally resign and terminate the contract immediately.”

Yan spoke at an unhurried pace.

The secretary, on the other hand, was stunned.

He resigned?

Just like that?

No way!?

There had been rumors in the company that Yan and Bai Wei were engaged. She didn’t know if it was true…
Whenever she thought about the engagement, resentment bit so hard her jaw ached.

Last month, President Bai had taken her along on a business trip. She’d seized the chance to get him drunk, and after finally giving him her first time, President Bai had been just about to soften and acknowledge what they had-only for Yan Jinge to stir up trouble and ruin it!

Good. Let him resign.

From now on, she wouldn’t have to see that clingy tagalong hovering around Bai Wei anymore!

Besides, over the past two-plus years, who knew how much blood Yan Jinge had sucked out of Bai Wei!

The secretary snorted, smugness dripping from her voice. “Oh, I get it. You and President Bai broke up, and you know you can’t stay, so you’re resigning, right? Let me tell you-Rongding is the biggest tech company on the market right now. Once you quit, you won’t get into a company this good again! And don’t just talk about salary. Last time President Bai went on a business trip, that watch he brought you was three hundred thousand. That’s enough to cover four or five years of work here, isn’t it? And that’s not even counting all the other gifts, big and small… and you’re still not satisfied? So when are you going to return everything President Bai gave you? Taking the benefits and still acting innocent…”

She kept chattering, only to realize there hadn’t been a single sound from the other end.

Startled, she pulled the phone away and looked.

At some point, Yan Jinge had already hung up.

Everything she’d just said had been nothing but her talking to herself.

The secretary was so furious she nearly slammed her phone into the floor.

After forcing herself to calm down, she thought back to what had happened and let a small smile curl at her lips.

With a huge problem like Yan Jinge gone, no one would stop her from getting closer to Bai Wei.

She was thrilled inside, but on the surface she knit her brows, putting on an anxious expression as she knocked and entered Bai Wei’s office. “President Bai, something’s wrong. Yan Jinge resigned.”

Bai Wei, seated behind his desk in the executive chair, lifted his eyes, his face dark.

On the computer screen in front of him was his email, and the first thing open was Yan Jinge’s resignation letter.

In his hand, his phone was playing the housekeeper’s complaining voice: “Mr. Bai, the Yan Family’s butler came today. He said he’s here to pack up Mr. Yan’s things and move them out. They’re carrying stuff around inside right now-the whole house is a mess…”

Bai Wei was already irritated and furious, with nowhere to vent. The secretary choosing this moment to come in and repeat something he already knew was like pouring oil on a fire.

Completely unnecessary.

He covered the phone’s microphone and glared at her. “I already know. Get out.”

The secretary froze, pouted, and shot Bai Wei a wronged look, but she didn’t dare poke at his temper. She hurriedly backed out.

Inside the office.

Bai Wei ground out into the phone, “If they want to take Yan Jinge’s things, let them take them!”

So what if they took them? He didn’t care about Yan Jinge’s things.

As if he’d gotten where he was now solely through his own brains. Yet those irrelevant people kept wagging their tongues, saying he’d climbed up by clinging to Yan Jinge, that he’d been kept by Yan Jinge.

Blind fools-completely unable to see his talent.

He’d make them watch. It wasn’t that he liked Yan Jinge or lived off him. It was Yan Jinge who stuck to him, and he couldn’t shake him off no matter what!

Besides, Yan Jinge having people move the stuff out now didn’t mean anything. Sooner or later, he’d move it back anyway.

When that time came…

Bai Wei was in the middle of imagining what he’d make Yan Jinge do when the office door was knocked on again. The secretary rushed in, her face drained of color.

Again?

And she couldn’t even manage her expression-making a scene like the sky was falling.

Bai Wei’s brows drew together. Just as he was about to snap at her, she blurted, “President Bai, there’s a whole team of lawyers outside-with more than a dozen bodyguards! They say they’re here to serve some kind of notice. They want to recover the gifts Yan Jinge gave you over the years, and they said there’s a clause about this in the engagement termination agreement-you already signed it.”

As she spoke, the secretary felt dazed.

A legal team hired by Yan Jinge?

Recover the gifts he’d given President Bai over the years?

Wasn’t Yan Jinge just an ordinary college student? What could he have given President Bai?

All these years at the company, the secretary only knew that every time Bai Wei went on a business trip, he’d have her buy gifts to give Yan Jinge. She’d never once seen Yan Jinge give anything back.

Wasn’t it Bai Wei who was supporting Yan Jinge? Why did the lawyers’ words make it sound like it was the other way around?

Across the office, Bai Wei’s expression shifted.

Would Yan Jinge really be that ruthless-demanding every last thing back? But those were gifts Yan Jinge had given while pursuing him. They were Yan Jinge’s sincerity. Since when did people break up and demand gifts returned?!

That was just-

Petty.

Miserly.

Shameless.

Others might not know, but Bai Wei knew exactly how much those things were worth. If this got blown up, with his money tied up in the company, he wouldn’t be able to come up with that much cash in a short time.

He hadn’t expected there to be a trap like that in the contract…

Damn it-he’d been enraged that day by Yan Jinge’s attitude, and by the way Yan Jinge had called in a crowd of relatives to watch him make a fool of himself. He hadn’t even bothered to read what the contract actually said.

But since he’d already swallowed it, there was no way he was spitting it back out.

Bai Wei forced himself to stay calm and pulled out his phone to call Yan Jinge and ask what the hell was going on. But the moment the call connected, all he heard was a repeating mechanical tone.

Yan Jinge had blocked him.
