Shocked, I'm the Favorites in the Survival Game - chapter 11
Day Three of the Game, 4:41 PM
They had been driving on the highway for an hour.
She turned on her phone again and played the broadcast out loud.
The repeated announcements inside gave her a great deal of motivation.
“We’re on National Highway 713 now. We need to keep going along this road for about another seven hours.”
Lu Qingyuan began to tell her about the road ahead. “This car doesn’t have enough gas to get us to City X.”
“We can siphon some gas from abandoned cars along the way,” Chu Yian suggested upon hearing this.
Lu Qingyuan shot her a cold look, as if annoyed by her pretending to be clever.
“The highway won’t stay this easy to drive on.”
He spoke slowly, “We still need a vehicle that’s sturdy enough and has strong off-road capabilities.”
Only such a vehicle could withstand stronger impacts and not get stuck on obstacles or corpses.
Unfortunately, all the cars parked along the way had basically been scrapped.
Lu Qingyuan rubbed his eyes. The injury and prolonged tension made him look a bit exhausted.
“Teacher Lu, let me drive.”
Chu Yian took out a bottle of mineral water and some antibiotics from her backpack, and took over the driver’s seat. “Just keep following the highway, right?”
She confirmed the route again.
“Yes.”
Lu Qingyuan nodded. “Don’t stop for anything on the road.”
“Okay.”
Chu Yian fastened her seatbelt and drove in the direction Lu Qingyuan had indicated.
Driven by pressure, her driving skills improved rapidly. Not only could she avoid obstacles, but she could even dodge zombies, bumping along for dozens of miles.
Bad news-the gas tank was almost empty.
Good news-there were a lot of cars up ahead.
Worse news-these cars packed every lane, and who knew how many zombies were hiding inside.
Chu Yian stopped about a hundred meters from the traffic jam, making no sound at all. Lu Qingyuan, who had been resting beside her, opened his eyes and looked ahead. “About five hundred meters away, there’s a service area.”
After the zombie outbreak, anyone with a car would naturally try to escape first.
They could avoid the cars at the highway toll station, but not those at the service area.
More cars,
More people,
Meant more zombies.
“Should we get out and walk on the other side of the highway?”
Chu Yian noticed that all the cars were jammed on one side, while the opposite lane was empty. There was even a guardrail in the middle, which could at least block the zombies a little.
As for vehicles… they’d long wanted to switch to something with higher ground clearance, and there was bound to be something drivable along the way.
“Once we get across, let’s find a better car.”
“Okay.”
Lu Qingyuan nodded. The plan was rough, but there was nothing to object to.
A few minutes later
A slightly loud snapping sound rang out, startling the zombies a hundred meters away. They let out roars, their heads whipping around, mouths gaping, pupils the size of mung beans turning mechanically.
Nothing there.
After a brief commotion, the zombies returned to standby mode.
At that moment, Chu Yian and Lu Qingyuan were huddled behind the narrow van door. Pressed tightly together, they slowly edged to the left.
They reached the opposite lane.
With car doors shielding them on both sides, the two of them moved forward like sandwich cookies.
The stench of blood and leaking gasoline grew stronger at the tip of their noses. They had reached the section of the road where the cars were jammed. Through the glass above, they could just make out the zombies on the other side of the fence.
Chu Yian stole a glance, then quietly withdrew her head again.
There were quite a few zombies across from them.
If they all charged, the fence in the middle of the road wouldn’t hold them back. The thin van doors would be even less of a barrier.
Better run quickly.
Chu Yian ducked her head and pumped her legs as fast as she could, making Lu Qingyuan ahead of her look like a duck being chased.
But soon, she stopped again.
No, it was the front that stopped.
“What’s wrong?”
Chu Yian raised her head in confusion.
“Cars.”
Lu Qingyuan replied succinctly.
Following his gaze, they had already reached the opposite side of the highway rest area. More than a dozen cars were parked inside, some of which looked quite nice.
But there were just as many zombies in the middle.
Chu Yian looked at Lu Qingyuan, “Do we have to drive one of those cars?”
“Not necessarily.”
Lu Qingyuan countered, “Can you guarantee that the car abandoned halfway is in good condition, and has enough gasoline to support us for the next seven hours?”
Look at him talking like that… You’re handsome, so you’re right.
Chu Yian pulled out her pistol, “Teacher Lu, how do you want to do this?”
“You go start the car, I’ll look for spare fuel. Meet at the rest area in five minutes.”
As soon as he finished speaking, he grabbed a van door and ran off at lightning speed, crossing the fence in the blink of an eye.
Hey!
Chu Yian stood up, but when she saw the zombies with their backs to her, she quickly crouched down again.
Teacher Lu left so fast, he didn’t give her any time to prepare.
Chu Yian peered out the van window to observe the outside. She was directly facing the rest area, only about ten meters away.
Normally, that distance could be covered in a few seconds. But even in that short stretch, there were eight zombies just standing on the road. The vehicles in the middle were packed together, with no clear path to dash through.
Wait, there was one.
If she circled around twenty more meters, there were fewer cars ahead, though it looked like there had been a crash-several cars were piled up together.
Chu Yian held up the van door and took the longer route, planning her path in her mind.
She finally reached the spot with the fewest zombies, surrounded by vehicles that made for good cover and hiding places. The downside was that the large van door was hard to maneuver, easily bumping into things and making noise.
She hesitated for a moment, then decisively set the van door by the roadside, going in light.
She climbed over the railing and hid behind a red sedan.
She watched the zombies standing dazed in the middle of the vehicles, hunched over, carefully making her way past the wrecked cars.
She was extremely nervous, her palms sweating, barely daring to breathe.
But just then, a roar sounded-so close, right behind her!
Chu Yian’s hair stood on end. She gripped her pistol tightly and aimed behind her.
A zombie was only two meters away, its lower body caught in the car’s grille and bumper, its upper body desperately reaching toward Chu Yian.
It couldn’t crawl over-a false alarm.
Chu Yian swallowed, hunched over, and continued forward.
Bang-!
A crash sounded from a nearby car. She turned to see a zombie inside the car facing her directly.
Their eyes met, and the zombie grew even more frenzied. It slammed against the glass window again and again, the noise drawing zombies from all directions toward her…
