Chapter 116

Her rapidly beating heart suddenly grew heavy.

The sun rising in the distance emitted rays that had become piercingly bright.

Beili raised her hand, shielding her eyes at the brow bone, her forehead creasing.

“It probably doesn’t look very good.”

His hollow golden eyes still ‘watched’ the dazzling sun.

The man’s pale, broad hand pressed against the back of hers, mimicking her gesture to help shield her from the light.

“Because I can sense your heart. At this moment, there is nothing left but irritation.”

He sighed softly.

Beili pursed her lips and remained silent for a few seconds.

She felt the question was a bit melodramatic, but she asked it seriously nonetheless:

“Ashera… do you have someone you like?”

“That is a very interesting question, dear Little Butterfly.”

As if hearing an unexpected query, his chin tilted up slightly, and a low chuckle vibrated through his moving Adam’s apple.

“Someone I like? Hmm…”

Tilting his head, a smile spilled from his cold, thin lips as Ashera answered unhurriedly, “…Probably not.”

“…”

The girl’s red eyes stared at him coldly.

Could a Demon like someone?

Or rather…

Did a Demon even know what liking someone meant?

She recalled that every time Ashera kissed her, his face was always a pale, grayish white.

That perfectly sculpted face had never once flushed red.

“Ashera, do you know what love is?”

Beili looked at him and asked without much emotion.

She saw the corners of the man’s hooked lips pause for a moment.

Then, the curve deepened as he gave a lazy sigh. “Too many questions, Little Butterfly. I warned you not to develop curiosity toward me; it is not a good thing.”

“So you don’t know.”

“Hmm?”

“You don’t know what it means to like someone.”

Beili stated directly in a calm tone.

The cold, broad hand moved away from her brow and stroked her slender neck.

Beili inwardly rolled her eyes. Without panic, she retrieved the blood-stained contract from her Spatial Bracelet.

If you want to go back to your ‘happy old home’ right now, then go ahead and make your move.

As a reminder, she ostentatiously unfolded it for a glance before closing it again.

The man let out a low laugh. His icy hand did not tighten around her neck; he merely caressed it before moving down.

His hand covered the full curve over her heart.

Beili’s heart gave a violent jolt.

A vein throbbed in her forehead. She quickly pushed his hand away and crossed her arms to protect herself.

Beili was about to snap, “What are you touching, you bastard!” but then she heard Ashera say with a voice full of mirth:

“To like someone is to voluntarily offer one’s heart to them. Regrettably, I do not meet that condition.”

Hearing his words, Beili was slightly stunned, her movements pausing for half a beat.

Ashera was right.

How could a heartless Demon like anyone?

He couldn’t even feel the sensation of a heartbeat.

Her red eyes lowered slightly, thick eyelashes concealing the strange emotion in the depths of her gaze.

It seemed to be disappointment.

“Then that truly is a pity,”

Beili said slowly.

Ashera, however, seemed completely indifferent, merely offering a light smile.

“…A pity? Though I don’t know what is so pitiful about it, this is the state of my existence.”

“So, one of the three things you want to reclaim is your heart.”

Through a layer of black fabric, she used one end of the blood-stained parchment contract-tied with a red ribbon-to tap lightly and erratically against the man’s left chest.

Because he frequently supplemented it with other hearts, that spot had not shown its eerie, sunken appearance for a long time.

“Sainthos owes you a heart.”

Her tone was calm as she voiced her deduction as a statement of fact.

“The clue is hidden with Susanna. Perhaps… it’s related to her vanished Swan Family, right?”

Ashera neither nodded nor shook his head.

His hollow golden eyes continued to ‘watch’ the piercing sun in the distance, his long eyelashes unmoving.

As if he hadn’t heard a word she said, he gave no response to her deduction.

Or rather, he could not respond.

“Ashera, is it that you aren’t allowed to say?”

Watching the curve of the man’s pale, cold lips gradually deepen, the confusion that had lingered in her mind for so long began to unravel.

Ashera had entered into a cooperation with her, but he had been very vague about it. The described terms of their cooperation were only a simple outline, leaving her bewildered all day.

Only now did she understand. Perhaps due to a contract or some other reason, Ashera could not explicitly reveal information about the three items that had been taken from him.

“I understand,”

she said softly.

Only then did Ashera resume his movements.

“We’ve seen enough of the sun. I can send you back now.”

A smile slowly spread across his lips.

He stood up while holding the girl, his pale toes treading upon the air.

His long, straight silver hair cascaded down, shimmering like starlight in the sun as he turned around.

He brought her back to the tent and placed her on the bed.

“Clever Little Butterfly…”

Before leaving, he pressed a cold kiss to her forehead.

“Next time we meet, I will have a little gift prepared for you.”
