Chapter 122

“…”

Her red eyes were cold.

Beili pursed her lips and took a step back, avoiding the reaching hand.

He showed up at just the right time.

I’ll use you to make an example of what happens when people cross me.

Thinking this, she was about to raise her hand to summon a few Morpho Butterflies, intending to shake some corrosive powder into the Rat Half-beast’s eyes.

A white figure stepped in front of her first.

Broad shoulders and a wide back instantly blocked her vision entirely.

“It seems the alcohol you’ve consumed hasn’t completely robbed you of your reason, sir.”

Facing the newcomer, he spoke warmly:

“If you still wish to see tomorrow’s sun, please keep walking and leave immediately.”

“Hic-! Who asked you?” Emboldened by the alcohol, the Rat Half-beast raised his voice. “Who are you to her?”

A faint smile hung on the man’s lips.

He stared at the Half-beast for a few seconds before adding the second half of his sentence. “Otherwise, your rat head will hit the ground immediately.”

“What… hic!”

The Rat Half-beast’s bravado wavered slightly.

He seemed to think the man looked too refined, lacking the ruthless edge of a Noble, so he hesitated for a moment before stubbornly snapping back, “Who are you trying to scare? Hic!”

Beneath the monocle attached to a fine gold chain, his emerald-green eyes shimmered with an eerie light. He spoke slowly: “When the head is severed from the body and hits the ground, the brain does not die instantly.”

“So, your eyes will see my face, my shoulders, my knees, then my shoes, before your vision finally fades into darkness.”

In a gentle voice, he asked hauntingly:

“How about it? Would you like to experience it?”

“…”

Hearing those words, the hair on the back of the Rat Half-beast’s neck stood up. His intoxication vanished, and a trace of fear flickered in his tiny, bead-like eyes.

Finally, muttering and cursing under his breath, he skirted around the two of them and left.

…

Once the Half-beast was gone, Beili poked her head out from behind Doctor Cassius.

Her ruby-like eyes sparkled as she said with a surprised smile, “Doctor Cassius, I never expected to hear such bloodthirsty words from your mouth.”

It was quite a surprise.

Doctor Cassius turned back to look at her.

“Miss Bartholomew, as you can see, it is very dangerous here.”

His lake-green pupils remained gentle.

“I wonder if that crude Half-beast just now has made you consider leaving this place?” he asked softly.

“No, not at all,” she replied.

A hint of helplessness surfaced in her smiling expression.

Cassius sighed and said, “Very well then, Miss Bartholomew. You must stay close to me from now on.”

As he spoke, he bent his elbow and raised it gallantly, signaling for her to take his arm.

Beili gave a light laugh and followed Doctor Cassius’s lead, reaching out to hook her arm through his.

The two continued deeper into the narrow dark alley.

As they walked, muddy sewage splashed up from time to time, gradually staining their shoes.

Occasionally, a few children dressed in old linen clothes ran past them.

The houses on either side became increasingly dilapidated, some looking as though they might collapse at any moment.

They walked a bit further in, nearly reaching the end of the dark alley.

Recalling the map in her mind, Beili secretly guessed that they had already reached the Flea Nest.

Just then, some strange sounds reached her ears.

Wave after wave.

They were lingering and indulgent.

There were cries of desire and sighs of release.

It wasn’t just one couple.

It was many, many people.

Unabashed sounds of passion and lust drifted out, filling the air at the end of the dark alley.

“…”

Beili: ???

Clearly recognizing what those sounds were, Beili’s footsteps instantly froze.

Her whole body went stiff. A cold sweat broke out.

It was as if she had been struck by lightning; she was charred from head to toe with smoldering embarrassment.

She almost wanted to raise her hands and cover her ears immediately.

Maybe I’m hallucinating, Beili thought, her eyes dazed.

“This is the Flea Nest, Miss Bartholomew.”

Pointing to a building at the end of the alley, Doctor Cassius spoke to her.

…

Beili looked in the direction he was pointing.

She soon saw a house.
On the wall directly facing them, floor-to-ceiling windows were distributed densely and neatly.

Almost none of the windows had curtains drawn to block the view.

Anyone passing by the house could look through those clean, polished panes and see scene after scene of hormone-fueled activity.

And they were all in progress.

These powerful images left her completely stunned.

Beili’s red eyes instantly went wide.

Her brain had short-circuited.

“So… that’s what it is.”

So this was the Flea Nest.

Thinking back to what Doctor Cassius had said before they set out, he had placed almost all the emphasis on the word ‘chaotic.’

Only now did Beili realize that the ‘chaos’ he spoke of referred to this.

Doctor Cassius, standing beside her, didn’t seem too surprised.

In fact, he was frighteningly calm.

Doctor Cassius turned his head, lowering his eyes to look at her.

His calm, emerald-green pupils flickered with a faint smile as he watched Miss Bartholomew’s shocked, dazed, and helpless expression.

“It seems Miss Bartholomew didn’t know what the Imperial City’s Flea Nest actually was.”

Beneath the monocle held by a fine gold chain, the man looked refined and composed. His voice was soft as he spoke:

“However, it’s not too late to regret it. If you just turn around, we can leave.”

“…”

Leave?

Doctor Cassius’s words caused the girl’s frozen brain to reboot.

Sigh…

As the saying goes, since I’m already here…

Yes, since I’m already here.

Beili felt the tips of her ears grow hot, but she forced herself to stay calm, acting as if nothing was wrong. “We’ve already come this far, so of course we can’t leave. I need to find the information broker in this Flea Nest.”

“An information broker?”

His expression showed a hint of surprise before shifting to realization.

His thoughts seemed to struggle for a few seconds before he sighed and said:

“Very well then, let us go in.”

Unable to do anything about this stubborn child, Cassius raised his left hand to support his forehead.

His tone was full of helplessness.

“I really don’t know how I’m going to report today’s itinerary to the Duchess…” he murmured.

One white and one black figure walked toward the house.

Those blush-inducing sounds became increasingly clear.

Beili couldn’t help but stiffen, her deep red gaze awkwardly avoiding the windows.

However, after entering the house, the sights inside made her face turn pale one moment and flush red the next; it was quite a spectacle.

All sorts of people and Half-beasts were there.

Behind hanging veils of gauze, they were entangled in hazy, blurred shapes.

Some didn’t even have gauze to hide behind.

They didn’t shy away from the gazes of others at all; some even seemed to enjoy being watched.

Walking past the heart-pounding veils, Beili felt her heartbeat skip a beat.

Her gaze darted away rapidly as if she had touched hot coals.

Because shocking scenes were everywhere in this house.

Her mind was filled with thoughts like: ‘Confusion,’ ‘Who am I,’ ‘Where am I,’ ‘How did I end up here,’ ‘What is the meaning of life,’ ‘Where is the end of the universe’…

…

“Are you two here for some fun?”

People constantly approached them, eyeing the pair like tasty snacks and asking in suggestive tones.

Raising a hand in a dismissive gesture, Cassius looked around calmly. At the same time, he gallantly placed an arm around the girl’s shoulder, leading her toward a relatively dim corner.

There stood a hunched figure wearing a hood.

He gently patted the girl’s hand, signaling her to stay calm, and then stepped forward first.

They exchanged a few words in low voices.

The figure looked up, revealing a pair of a woman’s eyes beneath the hunched frame.

She looked Miss Bartholomew up and down, then nodded.

Beili immediately realized this person was the information broker she was looking for.

She quickly walked over.

“I want to ask for some information,” she said.

The information broker held up a hand, signaling a number.

Beili remained expressionless, directly taking a bag of gold coins from her Spatial Bracelet and placing it in front of the woman.

“As long as your information is useful, gold is not an issue. This is a deposit until I receive authentic and useful news.”
