Chapter 125

The dark carriage continued its journey.

It was quiet inside, the only sound being the steady rolling of the wheels outside.

The boy’s already faint voice gradually faded into nothingness.

His body seemed to regress.

Beili felt a sudden, bone-chilling aura rapidly fill the entire carriage.

The air felt as if it had frozen solid, and she couldn’t help but shiver.

With a flick of her finger, Beili summoned several Morpho Butterflies to her side.

The hazy blue-green glow of their wings illuminated the area in front of her.

…

The dark walls of the carriage were thick, absorbing all light.

Even with the appearance of the Morpho Butterflies and their blue-green radiance, the interior remained exceptionally dim.

Squatting, the boy curled up in a corner.

At some point, he had torn off his black headscarf and tossed it aside.

The silver hair that had previously been shaved short had grown back; the front hung down on both sides of his forehead, while the back reached his nape, forming a somewhat messy wolf cut.

His black robes draped down, and the parts touching the floor flowed out like thick ink, congealing into a layer of black ice.

A thin layer of frost had unknowingly formed on the surface of the carriage wall where the boy leaned.

Silver-white ice crystals shimmered with a cold glint in the blurred light.

…

She hadn’t expected the boy to have such a strong reaction just because she refused to absorb Mana once.

Beili was secretly startled.

Her red eyes calmly swept over the closed carriage door.

After a moment’s thought, she softened her voice and said gently:

“Ashera…”

The temperature was so cold that she could almost see her breath.

The boy’s head hung low.

His pale fingers were spread wide, clutching at his hair.

Beili couldn’t see his expression; she could only hear the faint, muffled laughter and the nearly inaudible murmurs coming from him.

“That’s not it.”

She sighed helplessly in her heart.

Setting her mask aside, she took two steps forward and knelt in front of the boy. She patted his shoulder and reminded him tactfully:

“I said it just now… ‘next time.'”

She enunciated those last two words very clearly.

It wasn’t as if she would never absorb Mana from him again.

Besides, she was the one taking, and Ashera was the one giving.

That’s right…

She was the one shearing the wool, and Ashera was clearly the sheep!

And now.

This sheep was throwing a fit because she temporarily didn’t want to shear him.

Um…?

What a strange feeling.

…

On the other side.

The boy was clearly not soothed by her explanation.

His aura grew even more despondent.

His face was buried in his arms and the shadows.

His shoulders trembled slightly.

She had no choice but to pat the boy’s arm again, continuing patiently, “Ashera, don’t be like this. I really just don’t want to absorb Mana this one time.”

The boy still didn’t look up.

His hands remained buried in his hair, his knuckles turning a pale, grayish color.

Drip.

Drip.

She heard the sound of water droplets falling.

Lowering her gaze.

She saw tears that had nearly turned to ice falling from his lowered face. They hit his black robes and instantly shattered into fine icy shards.

…

This guy… is he crying?

Beili wasn’t sure.

Because even though she was so close, she didn’t hear a single sob.

She only heard short, faint, muffled laughter coming from the boy’s curled-up figure every now and then.
It was eerie.

Beili felt the hair on the back of her neck stand up. Helpless, she sighed inwardly countless times before she finally couldn’t help but blurt out:

“I’ll kiss you, alright?”

…

As soon as the words left her mouth, the youth finally moved.

He slowly lifted his head to ‘look’ at her.

His lashes, as long and thick as black feathers, bore the damp traces of tears.

Looking somewhat aggrieved, he asked softly, “…Really?”

“…”

Beili was momentarily speechless, unsure of how to respond.

By the light emitted by the Morpho Butterflies, Beili saw that those holy yet hollow golden eyes were riddled with black bloodshot veins.

After a few seconds of silence, she took a light breath and said, “Really.”

His tightly pursed, cold lips relaxed slightly, and a hint of a smile couldn’t help but escape.

His voice trembled a bit as he said, “Then you… do it n-now.”

…

He really was acting!

Seeing the smile at the corners of the youth’s lips, Beili felt extremely frustrated.

Feeling a bit uneasy, she turned her head away and said, “I didn’t say where I’d kiss you just now.”

Hearing this, a look of anticipation rose on the youth’s face.

“Okay… then don’t, don’t say it,”

he said, his voice full of expectation.

“…”

Beili: ?

How did this conversation become so strange after he took over?

The chill inside the carriage had dissipated at some point.

Her deep red gaze swept lightly over the youth’s pale, gloomy face.

Beili was currently choosing a spot for the kiss.

Wait…?

Why was she choosing a spot for the kiss?

How did things end up like this?!

She had to find a rational explanation for this bizarre situation.

Soon…

She noticed the youth’s eyes.

Those terrifying black bloodshot veins were gradually receding, and the hollow, lifeless golden eyes were returning to their original state.

She was trying to stop a Demon from going mad.

Yes.

It was just that the method of prevention was a bit… niche.

Yes, that was it.

She finally found a reasonable explanation for what she was about to do.

She straightened her arms, her fingertips bracing against the floor.

Then she tilted her head.

She lightly pressed a kiss against the side of the youth’s slightly upturned face.

It was like a night breeze brushing across the surface of a lake.

A soft, gentle touch against his cold face, followed by a quick retreat.

Beili’s heart was beating a bit fast.

It was beating even faster than during those tangled kisses when she absorbed Mana.

She gripped the grey gauze of her skirt, hearing her heart thumping heavily, making a ‘thump-thump-thump’ sound.

She raised a hand to cover her chest, pretending as if nothing had happened, while saying in a calm and composed tone, “Is that enough?”

She lifted her red eyes.

She saw that the youth still maintained the same posture from when the kiss landed, his face slightly upturned, the faint smile on his lips frozen.

He remained motionless, stunned in the corner.

A complex mix of emotions surfaced on his face-a jumble of shock, ignorance, joy, and confusion.

It was several seconds after she spoke that the frozen youth finally took a breath. His eyelashes fluttered, and a smile uncontrollably blossomed at the corners of his mouth.

It was as if brilliant, falling sunlight had dispelled the gloom.

Smiles hung from his brows and the corners of his eyes; the curve of his mouth was unmistakable.

“I… am very happy.”

The youth ‘looked’ at her, his voice soft and earnest.
