Chapter 146

“I must trouble you again to treat my father,” someone said.

“It is my honor to treat the King of Sainthos, Your Highness Cumberland,” another person replied, their tone gentle and respectful.

“Since you resigned from your position as a Royal Family physician, my father’s body hasn’t known a single day of comfort. The physicians in the palace are at their wits’ end. They can only frequently mention-”

The speaker paused slightly, intentionally mimicking a panicked and helpless tone. “If only Doctor Cassius Alfredo were here…”

…

Two figures sat on ornate golden chairs, their backs turned to her.

However, Beili could still identify the two of them from their voices and silhouettes.

On one side was, of course, the master of this dream-the King of the Santos Kingdom outside of the dream world.

Only, in this dream, he did not yet wear a crown on his head.

So, at this moment, he was still His Highness Prince Cumberland Elvis.

On the other side was the person with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a soft voice-Doctor Cassius.

“Those physicians are not wrong, Your Highness Cumberland.”

Doctor Cassius’s voice carried his usual humility and a hint of a smile.

“His Majesty is getting old. Even if Your Highness were to selflessly offer your own heart as a replacement, it would not compensate for much.”

“Regrettably, I can only temporarily use some nerve-numbing herbs to alleviate the King’s pain,” he said.

“I also know that Father doesn’t have much time left.”

Prince Cumberland let out a heavy sigh, his head drooping low.

“I only hope that Father can pass away peacefully and not suffer from the torment of illness in these final moments.”

His tone sounded full of sorrow and regret.

But it only lasted for a few seconds.

When he lifted his head again, his voice was once more filled with a smile-

“Look at me, talking so much and wasting your time.”

“Doctor Cassius Alfredo, this time, do you still need to take some dead butterflies from this conservatory for specimens?”

Prince Cumberland asked in a lighthearted tone.

“Yes, if I may.”

“Of course you may.”

As the words fell, half a face peeked out from behind the back of the chair.

Prince Cumberland spoke to the servants who were quietly tending to the flowers and plants in the conservatory: “Pick up all the dead butterflies and give them to Doctor Cassius Alfredo.”

“Yes.”

The servants in the conservatory answered in unison.

They then put down their work one after another and began to search for the stiff butterflies fallen on the ground, among the flowers, and between the leaves.

After a while.

A silk bag filled to the brim with butterfly carcasses was handed to Doctor Cassius.

Perhaps seeing that bag of butterfly remains prompted Prince Cumberland to suddenly ask, “Doctor Cassius Alfredo, you are well-traveled and knowledgeable. Do you know which kingdom or region has immortal butterflies?”

“Butterflies that don’t die?”

“Yes, you heard correctly. Smaller butterflies can only live for a few weeks, and larger ones can live for a few months, but that’s about it. This means that if we gather here for tea again this time next year, not a single butterfly in this conservatory will have survived until then.”

Doctor Cassius’s tone was somewhat surprised as he said, “So that’s what you meant… Your Highness Cumberland, at first I thought you were talking about the Constance Family of Butterfly Valley.”

“But they only possess the ability to heal themselves; they clearly cannot escape the fate of aging and death.”

He gave a silent smile before continuing, “So, as for the immortal butterflies Your Highness mentioned, I am afraid I haven’t heard of them and cannot provide you with any useful information.”

“The Constance Family…”

Prince Cumberland’s tone was thoughtful. “I had actually forgotten about that family…”
“…Your Highness?”

“Oh, it’s nothing. But you’ve given me some new ideas.”

Doctor Cassius remained silent for a few seconds before saying, “I don’t quite understand the meaning behind your words, Your Highness, but if I could be of help, it is my honor.”

…

Beili flattened her blue-green wings, remaining motionless on a leaf as she listened to their conversation.

A brown butterfly suddenly fell from above her.

Like a withered leaf in winter, it plummeted straight down, landing beside her.

A set of footsteps approached.

Beili watched as a servant walked up to her, crouched down, and reached out to pick up the stiff butterfly beside her.

Then, the dream shifted again.

Beili’s vision plunged into a brief darkness.

Just as she thought a blinding light would strike her eyes after the transition, it didn’t happen.

The dream scene shifted, yet it was still the massive arched glass conservatory.

However, outside the stained-glass dome, the sunny blue sky had turned into night.

Beili remained motionless on the leaf.

She quickly scanned the conservatory.

There were no servants in the garden room now; only Cumberland Elvis remained.

In this dream context, he could once again be addressed as His Majesty the King of Sainthos.

For now, a crown rested upon his head.

Amidst the blooming flowers and spotless greenery, he still sat upon a golden chair.

However, the chair was of a different style-more magnificent, more eye-catching, and encrusted with countless crystals and gemstones.

It was impossible to tell how many batches of butterflies in the conservatory had been replaced, but their numbers remained as vast as ever.

They fluttered through the air or perched among the delicate blossoms and the trailing vines of hanging spider plants.

Then, Beili noticed some distinct differences.

Directly opposite the King’s seat, a lattice wall constructed of gold thread had been added, covered in climbing vines.

Several Golden Cages were hung haphazardly across the lattice wall, each containing a single butterfly.

At that moment.

A Magic Screen hovered in front of the King, and a Communication Orb floated beside him.

Then.

Beili heard a man’s voice say:

“Your Majesty, Miss Bartholomew has arrived at Holy Island.”

She heard her own name and felt that the voice was incredibly familiar, as if she had heard it somewhere before.

She fluttered her wings and flew up, landing on a spider plant that offered a better vantage point.

She looked at the Magic Screen hovering before the King.

Sure enough, she saw the silhouette of Messenger Yue clearly displayed on the screen.

The King gave a faint “Mm.”

With an expressionless face, he said to Messenger Yue, “Then proceed according to plan.”

“Yes,” Messenger Yue replied respectfully.

“Feed her something first to see if that child truly cannot die. If she is still alive, have the Red Cardinal try using magic…”

The King spoke with a smile, pausing for a few seconds as if suddenly remembering something before adding:

“…Just in case this child really can’t be killed. Oh, right, remember to use memory-erasing magic on her first.”

“After all, the Constance Family is still very important to Sainthos.”

In a slow, gentle tone, the King said, “So, things must be done cleanly. If the child really dies, do not let their family notice any clues.”

“Yes.”

Messenger Yue replied respectfully once more.

“Give me an answer as soon as it’s over. I’ll be waiting.”

“By your command, Your Majesty.”

Messenger Yue bowed slightly to him through the Magic Screen.

Then, the image on the screen distorted, turning into a solid page of grayish-white.
