Chapter 152

Night fell.

The Mosquito People emerged in full force.

A massive swarm settled on the rooftops and outside the windows, circling back and forth with a persistent, droning hum.

Amidst the dense cluster of human-mosquito silhouettes, an even larger figure approached the glowing window, surrounded by the swarm.

As the deafening buzz reached the window, something resembling an elephant’s trunk probed tentatively, reaching into the room filled with fluttering Morpho Butterflies.

Inside the room.

Clutching the Black Lamb, Beili opened her red eyes and watched the long proboscis snake through the window.

She sensed that as her summoned Morpho Butterflies beat their wings, the corrosive toxic powder they shed was stinging the intruder.

A sharp sound, like a cold wind whistling through a door crack, erupted from outside, and the long proboscis jerked back.

At the same time.

Beili heard a series of heavy thuds coming from above her head.

It seemed the swarm of Mosquito People, who had been resting on the opposite roof but were startled by the intense light of the Morpho Butterflies, had relocated. They had moved their resting place to the roof of the hostel where she was staying.

The roof hadn’t been repaired in years.

The old, rotting wooden planks began to emit a fragile creaking sound, and dust trickled down from the cracks in the ceiling as if it might collapse at any moment.

Beili looked at the ceiling with a calm gaze and asked, “Are they trying to tear the roof off directly?”

“It certainly seems that way.”

Ashera’s voice drifted from the Black Lamb’s mouth, low and languid.

“Didn’t you say your dinner had arrived?”

Beili’s crimson gaze shifted between the dust-showering ceiling, the window filled with Morpho Butterflies, and the blood-stained door.

She struggled to keep her tone steady: “So, what is your plan?”

A low chuckle escaped the Black Lamb’s mouth as the man replied, “Do you think I look like someone capable of having a plan in my current state?”

Suddenly, a figure tried to squeeze through the window.

Beili looked over, her red eyes darkening as she instinctively tightened her grip on the Black Lamb.

Swarms of Morpho Butterflies quickly enveloped the figure. Moments later, the figure dissolved into a puddle of swamp-like black water, bubbling slightly with a sizzling, corrosive sound.

“You killed him, Little Butterfly.”

As if satisfied with her actions, Ashera, within the Black Lamb, let out a sigh. With a hint of a smile, he added, “You could even kill the one outside… but first, recall that weapon of yours.”

Hearing Ashera’s words, Beili felt a bit more grounded. She began to repeatedly call out to her weapon, the Black Bone Scythe, in her mind.

However, the latter gave no response.

This caused Beili’s slightly lifted spirits to sink again. After thinking for a few seconds, she took the Miniature Crossbow from her Spatial Bracelet, strapped it to her wrist, and quickly loaded it with ammunition.

Then, picking up the Black Lamb again, she stood up and headed for the door.

“We can’t just sit here and wait for death. Even though there are more monsters outside, at least most of them fear the light.”

She spoke as she walked: “As long as I have the Morpho Butterflies emit a blinding light, they won’t be able to get close to us.”

The rest would depend on flight; she just had to fly fast enough.

“You certainly have a lot of peculiar ideas, Little Butterfly.”

The Black Lamb flicked its ears, and Ashera’s voice, thick with amusement, came from its slightly parted mouth. “Can I interpret what you just said as ‘you’re afraid’?”

Pretending not to hear him, the girl ignored his teasing.

After all, the one outside sounded like the boss of Blood Curse Town. If she could run, she would. She valued her life too much to just charge in blindly.

Clutching the Black Lamb, she hurried to the door and stepped over the corpses piled outside the room.

The Mosquito People gathered in the hallway saw her emerge. After a two-second pause, they surged toward her like a tide amidst a cacophony of buzzing.

Beili immediately raised her hand and summoned a Morpho Butterfly.

In the next second, the Morpho Butterfly erupted with a brilliant blue-green light, illuminating the Third Floor staircase as bright as day.

Some of the Mosquito People caught in the light immediately beat their wings and fled the hostel.

However, the remaining Mosquito People, who still retained distinct human characteristics, showed no obvious fear of the light. They continued to approach, though their movements were slower.

Beili raised her arm, pressed the trigger to fire bolts at the remaining Mosquito People, and simultaneously called for the Black Bone Scythe in her mind again.

But the Black Bone Scythe was like a runaway horse, completely ignoring and failing to respond to her summons.

“Can you turn into a cloud of black mist?”

The concentrated ammunition exploded.

Amidst the wailing shrieks that sounded like the whistling wind, Beili looked down at Ashera-the Black Lamb in her arms-and said, “I’m going to use Beast Transformation and force our way out. Those monsters who don’t fear the light seem to have rather sluggish wings.”
Beili finished speaking in a low voice and, without waiting for Ashera’s response, placed him atop the pile of corpses behind her. In the blink of an eye, she underwent Beast Transformation into a butterfly and flew out over the staircase railing.

She had spotted a small, open ventilation window on the wall at the corner of the second floor diagonally below.

She could definitely fly out of the hostel through that window.

Recalling the layout, she realized that exiting through that window would put her at the back of the hostel building.

Slipping out from there would allow her to avoid the massive Mosquito People at the front.

Once outside, she could head right and fly directly toward the Teleportation Array.

With her plan set, Beili recalled the swarm of Morpho Butterflies guarding the window, letting them circle around her. She left only one Morpho Butterfly glowing with an intense light to continuously repel the creatures.

At the same time, she flew toward the ventilation window on the opposite side of the second floor.

As she flew past the winding corridors of the third floor, several pale, withered hands reached out.

They clearly wanted to snatch the butterfly from the air, but the butterfly was far faster than their grasping hands.

Those Mosquito People who did not fear the light could only spread their wings and take flight, clumsily pursuing the butterfly.

It was just as the girl had expected-

The light-resistant Mosquito People were slow, and the butterflies she controlled were faster than them.

As for the fast-flying Mosquito People, they feared the light; the radiance emitted by the Morpho Butterflies surrounding her was enough to force them back.

Consequently, she reached the second floor quickly.

She flew straight out through the small window.

After leaving the hostel, Beili immediately oriented herself and flew toward where she remembered the Teleportation Array to be.

A wisp of black mist soon caught up with her.

Ashera’s lazy voice drifted from within the black mist:

“Little Butterfly, are you running away?”

Surrounded by the cluster of Morpho Butterflies, the girl’s voice emerged from the swarm, tinged with an inexplicable emotion:

“Why wouldn’t I run? Am I an idiot? Am I supposed to wait for those monsters to swarm me and suck my blood?”

They were all mosquitoes.

They were all buzzing, humanoid mosquitoes.

That cloud of black mist circled the butterfly swarm once as it flew before Ashera’s voice spoke again.

He said with a hint of amusement:

“Don’t be afraid, Little Butterfly. You really can kill their leader. I’m not lying to you.”

When the words “I’m not lying to you” came from the mouth of a Demon, they carried zero conviction.

Moreover, that cursed Black Bone Scythe couldn’t be summoned back at all.

“You’re weird.”

The girl’s voice came through gritted teeth from the rapidly fluttering swarm.

“And that scythe weapon you gave me is even weirder!”

The girl gave a heavy huff.

“Once we escape this place, I’ll settle the score with you.”

Beili couldn’t be bothered with the black mist. Consuming some Mana, she beat her wings and accelerated toward the Teleportation Array.

The Mosquito People behind them seemed to still be in pursuit, the air filled with a massive, droning buzz.

In Beili’s memory…

She only needed to cross the short streets of Blood Curse Town and pass through an overgrown forest to reach the Teleportation Array set in a clearing.

However, after crossing the streets, she didn’t see a forest in the light. Instead, she flew into a thick fog.

Beili’s heart sank, and she was forced to slow down.

The fog was extremely dense; even the intense light of the Morpho Butterflies couldn’t penetrate it. With just one turn, she lost her sense of direction.

She couldn’t tell which way she had come from or which way she should go.

“Lost, are we?”

Ashera’s voice rang out from beyond the thick fog.

Suddenly, Beili was pulled out of the mist by an irresistible force, landing in Ashera’s grasp.

As if he didn’t yet have enough power to maintain a human form, he was currently just a mass of black mist condensed into a humanoid shape.

Yet this dark shadow was currently standing atop a pile of Mosquito People corpses.

“We… we can’t get out before dawn, can we?”

She looked at the black mist and asked.

Ashera’s voice, carrying a faint hint of a smile, drifted from the mist:

“Regrettably, no.”

Realizing she couldn’t escape Blood Curse Town for the time being, Beili completely settled down.

She was forced to carefully consider Ashera’s suggestion, interpreting it in her own way:

“So… what you meant just now was that once their leader is dead, the other Mosquito People will surrender? Then maybe we can try a sneak attack…”

As if hearing something hilarious, Ashera’s distinct laughter echoed from the black mist.

“No… no, my dear Little Butterfly. These lowly creatures aren’t even worthy of a ‘sneak attack.'”

He laughed for a moment before adding:

“Furthermore, my meaning wasn’t just to kill their leader, but to kill every lowly creature here.”

“As for how to do it, I will teach you. After all, I am your Magic Mentor.”
Oh…?

“Ashera, you actually remember that?”

The butterfly emitted a fake sense of surprise.

If he hadn’t mentioned it, Beili wouldn’t have remembered at all, because this guy had never actually taught her any magical knowledge in a proper manner.

A casual Magic Mentor had created a casual student.

As if sensing the girl’s profound speechlessness, a low chuckle escaped from Ashera within the shadows.

Then, a finger condensed from the black mist brushed against the butterfly’s wings.

Though he lacked a physical form, Beili could still feel a familiar cold touch, just like he usually did-patting her head or poking the tip of her nose.

Just then.

A heavy buzzing sound reached their ears.

Beili spun her body quickly, turning her gaze toward the source while sending a Morpho Butterfly, glowing with an intense blue-green light, flying in that direction.

She saw a swarm of dark figures surrounding a massive silhouette as it approached.

As the Morpho Butterfly flew closer with its light, the smaller shadows quickly dispersed, leaving only the massive figure still flapping its wings and drawing near.

By the blue-green light of the Morpho Butterfly, Beili finally saw the creature’s appearance clearly-

It was nearly two stories tall, with a long, trunk-like proboscis protruding from its mouth and a pair of giant wings covered in black spots behind it.

It also had six slender arms, but these six arms were as long as human legs.

Its head was shaped like an inverted triangle, and a pair of compound eyes, bulging at both ends and packed with pupils, covered almost the entire face except for the mouth and nose.

Contrasted against the six slender arms, its round belly appeared gargantuan, like a balloon blown to its limit, ready to burst at any moment.

The next second.

Ashera’s voice pulled her thoughts back.

He said,

“Now, first, sense the location of your weapon.”

Beili withdrew her gaze, cleared her cluttered mind, and carefully felt for the location of the Black Bone Scythe.

The butterfly with blue-green wings paused for a few seconds as if it had found the direction. It flapped its wings and flew rapidly toward a certain part of Blood Curse Town.

The shadow also transformed into a cloud of black mist, following behind her.

…

Following the Mana fluctuations of the Black Bone Scythe, Beili consumed Mana to fly quickly to a desolate, open clearing.

As she was about to land, she shifted from her Butterfly Form back into her human form. Just as she took a step, a faint snapping sound came from beneath her foot.

Beili took a step back.

By the light of the Morpho Butterflies, she saw that she had stepped on and broken a branch stuck in the ground.

Feeling a vague sense of familiarity, Beili waved her hand, causing the Morpho Butterflies to scatter their light around the area. Finding the surrounding ground covered in stuck branches, she finally remembered-

This was the graveyard where she had come to absorb Mana during the day.

“Why did it run back here again?” Beili muttered in confusion.

“Because this is the place where the Mana is most concentrated,” Ashera’s voice came from the cloud of black mist floating beside her.

Not seeing the Black Bone Scythe, Beili sensed its location once more, only to find that at this moment, it seemed to be… under her feet?

She shook her head, pushing aside the absurd thought that a group of Mosquito People had dug a hole to bury the Black Bone Scythe, and attempted to summon it in her heart.

The Black Bone Scythe responded to her immediately, excitedly sending back a signal that translated to something like-

‘A bountiful harvest tonight!’

Beili’s expression darkened inwardly. She used a serious, cold, and irritable command to summon it-

Get your ass back here to Big Sister!

Soon, the Black Bone Scythe flew out from an inconspicuous collapsed house nearby and landed in front of Beili.

Drip-

Drip-

The sound of dripping liquid and a thick, foul stench of blood mixed with the residue of other unknown substances wafted through the air.

Beili couldn’t help but take a step back, and the surrounding Morpho Butterflies moved back with her.

The Black Bone Scythe approached her again, seemingly waiting to turn back into a pendant to be worn on her necklace.

“…”

Looking at the viscous blood coating it, Beili said nothing. She simply raised her hand tactfully and covered her nose.

Just then.

A dense, heavy buzzing sound approached them.

The swarm of Mosquito People had caught up.

This time, they were even faster.

Beili could even clearly see the largest one-

The waxy white skin on its belly had become very thin, and the blood inside its stomach was like a barrel full of red wine, rising and falling with its heavy breathing.

“Now, Little Butterfly, tell your weapon to slaughter every last low-level creature in this town.”

Ashera spoke from within the black mist.
