Chapter 191

A vessel for the heart.

After the surgery, the little girl fell into a long, seemingly endless slumber.

The room Doctor Cassius used to house her was kept neat and tidy, and the bedding was brand new.

Every morning, the softest sunlight would slant through the window and fall upon her.

In Doctor Cassius’s eyes, she had become like a wooden casket crafted from the finest materials, containing an equally precious treasure.

Therefore, even though he left early and returned late every day, he still made time to maintain the “wooden casket.”

He used magic to clean her body, comb her hair, and trim her nails.

Until one day.

Cassius returned to the house and saw that the person who should have been lying quietly in bed had appeared in the kitchen.

She was crouching on the stove, holding a baguette in her hands and chewing it with great effort.

Beyond that…

The entire house looked as if it had endured a chaotic war.

Vases were shattered, the kettle was overturned, and the water tap was left running.

Pillows, quilts, curtains, pots, and pans were all strewn across the water-soaked floor in a state of total disarray.

No wonder…

Cassius suddenly understood why his neighbors had looked at him with such hesitant, lingering expressions when he returned just now.

As a vessel for the heart, the two had fused perfectly.

In fact, after being nourished by the heart for a period of time, the little girl who had already died had come back to life.

However, she had lost all her memories.

She was like a blank sheet of paper, like a small forest animal; she had to relearn all the rules of being human from scratch.

This included the fact that she couldn’t make such a mess of the house when he wasn’t home.

“Your name is Cassius.”

After she, a quick learner, began to express herself, the first complete question she asked was:

“What is my name?”

Cassius’s lips parted slightly, and he paused. After thinking for two seconds, he replied, “Your name is Little Ba.”

“Little Ba…”

The little girl’s eyebrows knitted together. Naturally fond of beauty, she had heard from the bedtime stories Cassius read that the protagonists all had beautiful names.

Clearly, “Little Ba” was not beautiful.

As for why Cassius called her Little Ba…

It was because it was simple and easy to remember.

As a vessel, she didn’t need a magnificent name.

“Cas-si-us. Your name has three syllables,” the little girl said, counting on her fingers. “Lit-tle Ba. Little Ba’s name only has two.”

“No, no! No, no!”

Her tone was thick with dissatisfaction as she repeated her protest four times.

“Little Bartholomew.”

Cassius gave a silent smile.

“There, now you have more parts to your name too.”

Clearly, “Little Bartholomew” wasn’t particularly beautiful either.

However, satisfied that her name was now as long and grand as Cassius’s, the little girl nodded.

…

As a vessel.

Little Bartholomew’s living space was limited to a single two-story house.

The first floor contained the living room and kitchen, while the second floor had two rooms.

The larger, more spacious room was hers, while Cassius’s room was the smaller one.

Little Bartholomew liked to be lazy.

If Cassius was home, she would make him use magic so she wouldn’t have to take a bath that day-bathing was a hassle, but Cassius wouldn’t let her be lazy two days in a row.

Cassius read her a bedtime story every night so she could have wonderful dreams while she slept.

One night.

Little Bartholomew dreamed that she appeared in a very peculiar place.

She saw carriages there that moved incredibly fast, houses built incredibly high, and people wearing very strange clothes. Even the food was completely different.

It was as if her soul were tethered to someone.

She went wherever that person went and saw whatever that person saw.

She saw that person return home, toss their things onto the floor, and flop onto the bed.

Then, they picked up a glowing object and quietly stared at the dense rows of words upon it…

Little Bartholomew suddenly woke up.

Next door, the sound of a door opening and closing came from Cassius’s room. He seemed to be in a great hurry; the door shut with a loud bang.

Little Bartholomew quickly put on her shoes, opened her door, and ran out.

“Cassius-” She tilted her head and asked, “Where are you going so late?”

In the darkness, only a flash of a white coat hem caught her eye.

Little Bartholomew froze for a moment before chasing him downstairs.

“Cassius-”

“Don’t leave in such a hurry! I want to tell you about the dream I just had…”

By the time Little Bartholomew finished speaking, Cassius had already grabbed his overcoat from the rack, put on his hat, opened the door, and left in a rush.

He left so hurriedly, as if he were racing to meet someone, that he didn’t even have time to turn back and tell the girl running downstairs to “stay inside and don’t wander off.”

He didn’t even have time to lock the front door.

The front door remained slightly ajar, leaving a narrow crack.

Little Bartholomew waited for Cassius behind that crack for three days.

She couldn’t remember clearly; perhaps it was five days.

By the time Cassius returned to that house after delivering Bertie Swan’s daughter to Duke Constance’s home in Butterfly Valley…

It was already empty.
