Survival Guide After Accidentally Kissing a Demon - Chapter 47
Today is the final day of the Holy Island Competition.
Beili left the attic room early in the morning and wandered aimlessly around the Holy Island.
As the closing day drew nearer, her heart grew increasingly uneasy.
The morning mist, once a golden, dreamy haze woven from white feather-like veils, gradually thickened into a suffocating grayish-white.
The waves surged, and the sea breeze carried a cold, damp chill, shattering against the rocks.
Beili looked up and realized she had unknowingly walked near the Confinement Room.
That sealed building was still as lifeless as the first time she saw it, shrouded in dim light and the biting sea wind.
Her steps grew especially heavy as she approached the Confinement Room.
Without Dean Madeline’s permission, she could no longer enter the building to visit Lisa.
Besides, she suspected Lisa didn’t need her frequent visits anymore-after all, there were still unresolved issues between them.
Standing outside the rusted fence, her gaze fixed on the tightly shut, heavy door, Beili pondered, her brows slightly furrowed.
Just then-
The heavy door of the Confinement Room suddenly rumbled and slowly opened from the inside.
A Knight appeared at the doorway, struggling to drag an unconscious figure out.
Beili had witnessed such a scene not long ago. Though she felt uneasy, she wasn’t as shocked or frightened as the first time.
The Knight looked familiar; Beili wasn’t sure if he was among those who had thrown someone into the icy sea before.
But she noticed the sinister black aura emanating from the Knight.
……
Inside the Confinement Room.
The Knight looked up and, through the thick gray mist, suddenly saw a Young Woman with gray hair and red eyes, dressed in a black dress, standing expressionlessly and silently outside the fence.
The Knight’s shoulders jolted; he released the person in his grasp, clung to the doorframe, clearly startled.
The Young Woman outside the fence blinked her red eyes, then raised her hand, pressing her knuckles to her lips and coughing lightly-a subtle way to show she was alive.
The Knight took a deep breath, calming himself.
“&%!… What a weirdo!”
He muttered a few curses under his breath, then ignored the Young Woman and continued to grab the person on the ground, intending to drag them outside.
“Hey-! Charlie, what are you doing? Wait!”
A shout came from inside the Confinement Room, interrupting the Knight’s attempt to drag the person out.
“What is it?”
One hand braced against the heavy door, the other gripping the person’s collar, the Knight looked back inside, his tone impatient.
“Didn’t we get the notice? We’re not supposed to deal with these prisoners!”
The person inside the Confinement Room said loudly, “They all have to participate in the closing event. We’re already short on numbers, so why are you trying to throw him out?!”
The Knight at the door frowned deeply and explained, “This one is barely alive-I swear he won’t last through the night. Do you really want to wake up tomorrow to the stench of a corpse?”
“That’s not allowed either!”
Before the words finished, the person in the Knight’s grasp was swiftly pulled back inside, as if snatched away.
“Give him some healing potion, let him last until tomorrow. If he dies at the event venue, it’s not our problem.”
“If you throw him into the sea, do you want to take his place on stage? Use your brain, Charlie-idiot!” the person inside the Confinement Room scolded loudly.
The Knight at the door exhaled in defeat and compromised, “Alright…”
With that, the Knight turned to close the door.
He glanced outside and found that the Young Woman beyond the fence had already vanished.
……
Noon.
Holy Island Competition Finals Plaza.
The entire finals venue was bathed in dazzling, radiant light.
Beili (Miss Bartholomew) stood at the rear of the Holy Island Competition finals ground, her expression grave, waiting for Dean Madeline’s reply.
Behind her, the finals were underway.
Beili knew that if she walked over now, weaving through the bustling crowd to the very front, she would be able to see Cyril and the other competing students in their spectacular magical duels.
But she was in no mood to watch the competition or guess at its outcome.
Her anxiety and frustration had reached a peak.
Her heart was full of doubt, and she found it difficult to believe that a new rule-“allowing prisoners to participate in the closing Hunt Banquet”-could have received Dean Madeline’s approval.
Did Madeline not understand Beili’s true intent in signing up for the closing Hunt Banquet?
Did she not know Beili wanted Lisa to regain her freedom?
No-Dean Madeline knew perfectly well.
Cheers continued endlessly behind her.
Students wearing colorful ribbons ran past Beili, laughing and playing. Occasionally, a few would notice her cold, severe expression and her unapproachable aura, and would quickly stop laughing and hurry away.
“Miss Bartholomew.” Someone spoke.
A tall, slender figure walked slowly toward Beili-it was the Nun who was often seen at Dean Madeline’s side.
Seeing that it was only the Nun, Beili’s brow furrowed, and she strode quickly toward her, asking directly, “Where is Dean Madeline?”
“I’m sorry, Miss Bartholomew.”
The Nun kept a polite smile, her tone laced with apology. “Dean Madeline is currently presiding over the finals of the Holy Island Competition and cannot leave the grounds. I hope you understand. However, I will relay the Dean’s words to you in full.”
After Miss Bartholomew nodded, the Nun continued:
“Dean Madeline said that, with only a small number of students volunteering for the closing event and a severe shortage of prey for the Hunt Banquet, the Brown-robed Bishop of the Nauze Kingdom proposed allowing prisoners from the Confinement Room to participate in the closing Hunt Banquet. Most of the Bishops from other kingdoms agreed to this proposal, so the Dean had no right to refuse.”
Beili immediately asked, “Will the prisoners, during the event, wear Defensive Magic Pendants like the other students?”
The Nun fell silent, then shook her head.
Her heart sank to the pit of her stomach.
It was exactly as she had feared-the worst possible outcome.
The royal family of the Nauze Kingdom would never allow a commoner to stand above them and flaunt their power.
Whether they had learned that someone was trying to use the closing Hunt Banquet to rescue this commoner and thus made this proposal, or had always planned to keep the commoner as prey to be released into the event, made no difference to Beili.
A commoner without magic who appeared before any of the top ten could only pray that their opponents would be swift and decisive, so the pain they suffered would be less.
The young woman’s face was blank and silent.
The Nun let out a long sigh. “Miss Bartholomew, what I am about to say next has nothing to do with Dean Madeline-this is something I wish to tell you personally, and I hope you will not reveal it to anyone.”
After Miss Bartholomew nodded, the Nun leaned close and lowered her voice:
“The Brown-robed Bishop of the Nauze Kingdom has already issued an Honor Decree to all Nauze Students participating in the Holy Island Competition-if not a single Nauze Student enters the top ten, then all students from their kingdom must unconditionally sign up to become prey in the closing Hunt Banquet, and, as prey, hunt and kill the prisoner who killed Prince Samuel.”
