Chapter 2

Long Fu was too good to me.

So good that when I handed him that spiked drink, my fingers were trembling.

But I didn’t have much time left to live.

If I didn’t engage in dual cultivation with him soon, I probably wouldn’t survive another six months.

As the Dragon Prince, Long Fu never easily drank anything handed to him by others.

Yet, he downed what I gave him in a single gulp.

Until he realized something was wrong.

Long Fu’s breathing grew heavy, and his eyes turned bloodshot.

His first instinct was still to ask me:

“Fuck, this has been spiked. Xie Zhou, are you okay?”

I met his worried gaze.

I wanted to cry.

My eyes were dry as I shook my head, forcing the words out with difficulty:

“I’m sorry. I’m the one who did it.”

Long Fu’s pupils constricted in disbelief.

“…Xie Zhou, why?”

To stay alive.

But I couldn’t say it.

Long Fu didn’t know; I had even lied to him about being a dragon myself.

His eyes were filled with the agony of betrayal, looking as though he were beyond furious.

He reached out, seemingly wanting to wrap his hand around my throat.

But in the end, it turned into a caress against my face as he leaned in, his gaze hazy.

I knew he was losing consciousness.

The dragon qi was too overwhelming. As I was on the verge of fainting, I vaguely heard him say:

“Xie Zhou, do you have any idea? A dragon can only have one partner in their entire life.”

A night of absurdity followed.

When I woke up, my body was in pain.

As my memories came rushing back, I knew I had done wrong.

When Long Fu woke up, I apologized in a raspy voice:

“I’m sorry. I really didn’t know a dragon could only ever have one partner. I just wanted a bit of cultivation…”

“You just wanted cultivation?”

His expression was terrifyingly dark as he stared me down.

Yet, he couldn’t hide the redness in his eyes.

Such a proud, high-and-mighty Dragon Prince.

He was actually crying.

My heart began to ache for some reason. I wanted to comfort him like I used to, like a good brother.

But I had no right. I was a bad snake.

Long Fu had been so good to me, yet I had deceived him and forced him to be tied to me for the rest of his life.

But I just wanted to live.

I apologized weakly once more:

“I’m sorry…”

Long Fu looked down at me, his gaze cold and piercing:

“Then you’d better take responsibility for me until the very end. As my partner, you will be at my beck and call whenever I need you.”
