Chapter 117

Sheng An’s mind worked at high speed. She stared intently at the screen, commanding the members of the Apocalypse Special Affairs Department in this battle.

She had to lead them to complete the mission; failure was not an option.

This was her battlefield.

The final step was the most critical.

At the moment of their final interception, the instant they heard Sheng An’s voice…

The faltering Wu Buyu let out another long howl. With a violent flap of his wings, he shook off the three weakened people on his back and caught Li Wanyun as she was sent over by Long Tianyu.

Without a moment’s pause, he poured every ounce of his strength into a desperate maneuver. He carried Li Wanyun beneath the meteorite, streaking toward the right at extreme speed. The friction from the meteorite ignited his feathers.

Simultaneously, Nie Changsui’s winds swept up Ji Yani. Treading on the gale, she carried Zhang Kun toward the left at breakneck speed.

They had only one and a half seconds.

This second and a half had been bought by Li Xin, Lou Mingwei, and the others at the cost of exhausting their Supernatural Abilities.

Sheng An stared fixedly at the display.

In this second and a half, everyone’s blood seemed to reach a boiling point.

After multiple interceptions, the meteorite’s speed had dropped to its lowest point.

Liu Yue and Geng Leqian, the two Fire Ability Users who had held back until now, simultaneously extinguished the flames surrounding the meteorite.

Li Wanyun and Zhang Kun passed by like afterimages, one on the left and one on the right.

-The fractured giant meteorite was pulled into the Space Ability!

The area Li Wanyun had cleared in her Space Ability was for this very day.

Everyone before them had drained their Supernatural Abilities just for this moment.

They had succeeded!

Meanwhile, the falling Li Xin and the other two were caught by strands of hair, dangling beneath the aircraft.

Many were exhausted, their Supernatural Abilities completely spent.

“Phew-”

“Watch out!” Yu Feng, who was piloting the helicopter, cried out in alarm.

Though the giant meteorite had been taken away and the lethality of the smaller fragments hitting the ground was greatly reduced, the battle had caused one fractured piece of the meteorite to change direction. It was hurtling toward Jing City!

That absolutely could not happen!

Qiu Yu’s expression shifted drastically.

Sheng An’s body swayed. She instinctively raised her hand, but her vision went dark and her body burned with a high fever.

Zhuang Fan’s pupils constricted.

As a Verbal Spell Ability User, he hadn’t played a major role in this engagement. He had stood inside the aircraft, watching his teammates fall one by one, watching them fight with everything they had.

Now, he watched that flaming meteorite plunging toward Jing City…

Zhuang Fan’s face turned beet red as he roared-

“Immediately disappear right now!”

It was the first time he had spoken four words without stuttering.

It was also the first time he had used his Verbal Spell Ability on such a massive scale.

The more difficult the command, the higher the consumption of his Supernatural Ability, and the lower the chance of success.

Making a meteorite disappear was difficult beyond measure.

Zhuang Fan’s body went limp, and his vision blurred.

But he held on with sheer willpower, struggling to watch as that flaming meteorite-vanished into air.

Zhuang Fan finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Sheng An also let out a long breath, her body propped up against the screen in front of her.

Countdown: 0 seconds.

Meteorites fell like rain, crashing into the world.

*Bang!*

*Rumble!*

Apocalyptic sounds echoed across the planet. The entire world shook from the impact. Meteorites crashing into the ocean triggered tsunamis, and entire swaths of land vanished in an instant.

Even regions not hit by the large meteorites suffered violent earthquakes.

Human civilization was collapsing.

Landmasses shrank amidst the tsunamis. Half of the dense primordial forests were swallowed instantly as fires broke out and wild beasts fled in all directions.

Tall buildings fell like dominoes, toppling in an instant.

Cities were razed to the ground.

Smoke and dust billowed across the landscape, shrouding the earth in a thick haze.

The magnetic field destabilized again, suffering severe breakdown. Every aircraft in the sky began to fall.

Li Wanyun and Zhang Kun had taken away the largest meteorites.

On the map of Hua Country, a massive safety zone had been established with Jing City at its center. The smaller meteorites were not enough to destroy this entire sanctuary.

This would be their hope-the last pure land of human civilization.

The ground was shaking as the aircraft descended.

Sheng An issued the command: “Return to the surface.”

“Jiang Ling!” Qiu Yu shouted, pulling Sheng An as they jumped from the aircraft.

Jiang Ling’s hair entangled everyone. Then, she latched onto the falling Wu Buyu. The strain on her scalp was so intense she bared her teeth in a grimace.

Jiang Ling cursed, “Fuck! It hurts so much! After today, I’m going to lose half my hair!”
Wu Buyu: “…”

He beat his wings until they were nearly plucked bare, yet he still couldn’t stop their descent.

Nie Changsui exhausted the last of his Supernatural Ability, slowing their speed in an attempt to reduce the force of gravity.

Li Xin pried his eyes open. “Are we about to hit the ground and turn into loot boxes?”

Long Tianyu shoved his head back down. “Just stay unconscious.”

Despite the rapid fall, Sheng An wore a smile.

*

The ground was vibrating. In an instant, almost no one could keep their footing. While the tables were bolted down, the chairs rattled and clattered in the shaking.

The newly restored communications collapsed once more. Wan Yuan presided over the Communications Department, standing at the front with a gun in hand.

His voice was hoarse. “Keep debugging.”

Even while swaying, they had to do their best to debug the communications and restore monitoring as quickly as possible.

This was an essential task.

Today, everyone was giving their all to fight for a future.

And now, they had something even more terrifying to deal with-

The moment the meteorites struck the ground, they brought with them a terrifying energy. Carried along with it was a special substance that instantly dispersed across the world. Amidst the rising smoke and dust, it silently began to infect everyone.

Some people developed fevers and collapsed.

Others’ bodies convulsed as their eyes gradually changed.

“Ah-!”

“Dad! Something’s wrong with my dad!”

…

“Watch out, run!”

“Someone’s acting strange here too! Quick, tie her up first!”

…

“Everyone move back! Don’t get close! The patrol is here!”

…

Core Shelter.

There weren’t many ordinary citizens here; it was mostly populated by national administrators, staff, and researchers. Several major research academies, the Wasteland Cultivation Research Center, the Communications Headquarters… they were all located here.

They were the backbone of the nation and the key to maintaining order during the Apocalypse.

Despite the earthquake, everyone persisted in their work.

Others were rushing back and forth.

Aberrants would not fail to appear just because this was the Core Shelter.

Tang Fang and Lu Ming were two medical workers. Both were stationed at the Core Shelter, ready to reinforce other shelters at a moment’s notice.

During the most violent part of the earthquake, Tang Fang leaned against a nearby wall, waiting for the strongest wave to pass.

Lu Ming did the same.

Lu Ming said, “I wonder how things are on the surface? I always feel unsafe underground; I’m terrified the earthquake will make everything collapse.”

Tang Fang replied, “It must be terrible. This is the end of the world, after all. Still, the underground shelters are safer than the surface. A major earthquake causes cracks up there, buildings collapse, and dust fills the air-it’s easy for chaos to break out. These underground shelters were specially built by the state and reinforced by Metal Element Superpower Users. They definitely won’t collapse.”

He exhaled. “Damn, that earthquake was at least a magnitude eight. I’m about to vibrate until I puke. And this is only after the Sparks from the Apocalypse Special Affairs Department handled the giant meteorite. I can’t imagine what would have happened if they hadn’t…”

He rambled on, only to realize there was no sound coming from his side.

Tang Fang froze and snapped his head around.

The man beside him stood stiff and motionless.

Tang Fang’s pupils constricted. Before he could even try to flee, “Lu Ming” lunged at him, his expression bloodthirsty and ferocious.

The movement was sudden, vicious, and powerful-almost impossible to escape.

Tang Fang went rigid, his teeth chattering as he trembled.

*Bang!*

Before the creature could touch him-the very moment it moved-Lu Ming collapsed, his breath gone.

Tang Fang was dazed.

Then, realization struck him.

That’s right!

The Apocalypse Special Affairs Department also had a Psychic Ability master, the King’s Anchor. Today, he was guarding the Core Shelter.

Tang Fang relaxed instantly, filled with a sense of security.

In a place hidden from everyone’s sight, Qi Lingwu stood quietly. His eyes were closed, his consciousness covering every core member of the shelter.

A massive Sniper Rifle manifested in the void, silently firing shot after shot.

These people were the backbone of the nation; they were vital.

But the Chief Base Commander had said that once someone turned into an Aberrant, they were to be killed immediately-including the Commander himself.

The transformation into an Aberrant was very brief, and he needed to capture that fleeting window of time.

The surface was Sheng An’s battlefield.

-And this place was his.
