Chapter 118

At a certain Level 3 Shelter.

The moment the screens in front of them flickered into static, everyone knew-it had arrived.

Sure enough, the ground began to shudder in the next instant.

Even though they were crouching on the floor, the vibrations were so intense they were tossed up and down. Above them, the thunderous roar of collapsing structures was enough to make their hearts tremble and their bodies go cold with fear.

Wave after wave of tremors rippled through the earth as meteorites struck one after another.

*Boom!*

A section of the shelter collapsed.

Screams erupted from all directions.

Someone grabbed a megaphone and shouted, “Emergency Protocol Three! Hug the walls and move this way! Fast! Do not run blindly!”

Almost instinctively, the third rule of the Twelve Emergency Protocols flashed in their minds.

They pressed themselves against the base of the walls, shuffling toward the half of the shelter that hadn’t collapsed.

Only after reaching the safe zone did Wang Xiaoxiao’s parents let go of her hands. All three of them exhaled in unison.

However, in the next moment, someone nearby shrieked:

“Watch out for him! He’s not normal!”

Wang Xiaoxiao looked over immediately. Sure enough, a man was twitching, his expression contorted into a hideous mask. His voice came out in ragged gasps: “I’m… I’m fine… I’m just-sick-”

The police were right there. Seeing this, an officer barked, “Everyone, get back!”

The crowd scrambled away.

The officer raised his gun and approached slowly. “If you are normal, put your hands up. We need to handcuff you.”

“Okay,” the man said.

The officer drew closer.

The man’s eyes suddenly sharpened, and he lunged to snatch the gun from the officer’s hand.

*Bang! Bang! Bang!*

The other officers fired several rounds in succession, gunning him down.

This was clearly an Aberrant!

Wang Xiaoxiao covered her mouth, her eyes turning red with terror.

Someone beside her wailed, “Ugh… is there no way out for us?”

Part of the shelter had collapsed, and Aberrants were appearing… it felt as if the entire world was plunging into despair.

Among the crowd, someone else shouted, “Look outside!”

Everyone turned their gaze outward.

The partial collapse of the shelter allowed them to see the world beyond. A towering landmark of the city was currently toppling over with a roar, sending debris flying everywhere.

A meteorite trailed fire as it slammed into the distance, sending flames shooting into the sky and making the earth quake.

Smoke and fire billowed across the land as a massive shroud of dust spread out.

It was far more terrifying than any war scene depicted on television.

The shelter staff used prepared barriers to block the breach. The ground continued to sway, and several volunteers rushed over to help brace the panels.

Those who saw the outside world stood frozen in shock.

The shelter manager picked up a megaphone: “We are still alive.”

Wang Xiaoxiao blinked.

Slowly, she wiped away her tears.

That was right. They were still alive.

If there were no shelters, and they were still in the impact zones or near those landmark buildings… what would have become of them by now?

This was already a good outcome.

At least they still had hope; it wasn’t a dead end yet.

Wang Xiaoxiao’s parents led her to a corner and slowly crouched down, maintaining the posture taught by the authorities.

Others began to crouch down as well.

Some were still crying, and some were grieving, but none of them gave up.

***

The largest shelter in Jing City.

Aside from the Core Shelter, this was the safest facility, housing countless citizens.

Jing City was the least affected area.

Therefore, even though the earthquake was severe and meteorites continued to fall outside, everyone followed instructions and stayed in place, cooperating fully.

Armed police and volunteers moved through the aisles.

In one section where the shaking was particularly violent, several people were knocked flat. They immediately gritted their teeth and sat back up, doing their best to maintain a safe posture.

One woman did the same.

But soon, she noticed a squad of special police officers heading toward her with their guns drawn.

Her eyes were vacant. “What happened?”

The special police fired directly at her.

*Bang!*

The woman’s figure blurred, and she actually dodged the shot!

She clung to the wall like a predator, her expression twisting into something monstrous. “How did you find out?!”
No one answered, because in the next instant, Team 0 members Chen Yue and Jiu Su fired simultaneously, gunning her down.

Ruan Zifeng stepped out from behind the SWAT officers, baring his teeth. “Because I’m here.”

As soon as the words left his mouth, Chen Yue pulled him behind his back with a cold expression.

“Stay back,” he barked.

Ruan Zifeng: “…Oh.”

He rubbed his nose and obediently stayed protected in the middle of the group.

The Chief Base Commander sat in the Core Shelter. The screen in front of him was still a mess of static, but this situation had long been predicted, so he wasn’t surprised.

The Communications Department needed time to recalibrate.

Surrounding him were countless core members, including relevant scientists, as well as Hao Jingye and Gu Cheng.

The ground was still vibrating.

One person here had been killed by the King’s Anchor, and two others had fainted from high fevers, but the rest remained unchanged.

His voice was hoarse. “Even though we knew it was coming, the actual arrival is still a disaster more terrifying than we could have imagined.”

A foreign scientist was weeping.

Another person patted his shoulder comfortingly, sighing silently.

His country was an island nation; they had moved as far inland as possible in hopes of avoiding this disaster, or at least… to minimize the losses.

However, the moment the Meteor Shower truly arrived, and as he watched the photos flashing occasionally across the static-filled screen, he finally understood why this day was called the apocalypse.

Jing City was already a safe zone, and the Core Shelter was the safest place within that zone. Hua Country had the Apocalypse Special Affairs Department and countless powerful Sparks.

They were up in the sky, intercepting the massive meteorites and adding a layer of protection over Jing City.

Yet, even with the impact reduced to this extent, Jing City still suffered such a severe earthquake. More than half the buildings in the city had collapsed. The photos coming in showed smoke and dust billowing everywhere.

The ground was shaking so much that they had to hold onto brackets fixed to the floor just to stay upright.

The foreign scientist felt his world spinning, both mentally and physically…

With a disaster of this scale, did his country even still exist?

Hao Jingye pursed his lips and spoke softly:

“This is already the best-case scenario. The Core Shelter hasn’t suffered much damage, and the other shelters in Jing City haven’t fallen. As for the specific casualties in the other shelters… we’ll have to wait until the Meteor Shower is over.”

The meteorites with the greatest impact had already landed.

However, the smaller meteorites were slower and arriving later, continuing to pelt the ground one after another.

The Chief Base Commander nodded and let out a breath, immediately issuing orders-

“It wasn’t easy for the Apocalypse Special Affairs Department to intercept those large meteorites. Go up and meet them. If they’ve finished the interception work, make sure the footage is preserved. Once communications are restored, use it immediately to inspire the various bases. Also…”

Hao Jingye responded immediately, “Yes, I’ll go meet them!”

He turned and strode away.

In the corner, Old Man Qin picked up Qin Xuan and hurried to follow.

After the first wave of meteorites hit the ground, the tremors gradually weakened, and the Communications Department became a whirlwind of activity.

Finally, the static on the screens began to dissipate-first in the Core Shelter, then in the various shelters across Jing City, and then gradually expanding outward.

As communications resumed, distress signals and calls for support from various regions were all sent out.

Countless pieces of information were dispatched from the Core Shelter, and countless reports were consolidated back into it. Before the dust on their clothes could be shaken off, and before the dizziness had fully passed, the hubs of every shelter roared into operation.

And the screen that had been full of static slowly became clear.

On the dust-covered ground lay a group of people, along with a “bird” that was struggling to move its body.

They were all covered in wounds and blood, their clothes scorched and tattered.

One of them stood up unsteadily.

Sheng An was burning with a fever, her vision blurred and her face covered in grime. Yet, amidst the dust, her eyes remained bright. She slowly raised her hand in a salute, her voice weak-

“Reporting! The Apocalypse Special Affairs Department has successfully intercepted the large meteorites. Mission accomplished.”
