Chapter 136

After the last batch of meteorites landed in Shi City, the Core Shelter dispatched a team of experts to the city, escorted by an armed force. At the same time, they borrowed Zhang Kun, the Space Ability user from Group B, to bring back the meteorites.

Sheng An had been uneasy, so she sent Liu Yue and Ke Jiaxue along as well.

Water and Fire Supernatural Abilities were currently the two most viable powers for survival in the outside world. Furthermore, as Superpower Users who had awakened early, it should have been impossible for any newly awakened Superpower Users or Aberrants to defeat them.

She never expected that something would still go wrong!

Moreover, the phrase “the Aberrants” implied that it wasn’t just one or two of them.

Sheng An’s expression was grim. She turned and headed out. “To the Communications Department.”

The others were stunned, looking somewhat lost.

Lou Mingwei asked, “What happened?”

Hao Jingye immediately followed her. “Doesn’t matter. Let’s go see for ourselves first!”

With that, the entire Group B followed.

Li Xin didn’t forget to scoop up the cat they had just named “Shan Hua.” After all, it was now a member of Group B; since the whole team was assembling, the cat couldn’t be left behind.

His hands didn’t grab empty air; Shan Hua was very cooperative.

The few members of Group A were left behind, staring at each other in confusion.

Ruan Zifeng said, “Let’s go find Team Leader Qiu first. I have a feeling something big has happened; everyone should be notified soon.”

*

At the Communications Department.

Elder Zhang and Elder Li had both arrived. One was Sheng An’s direct superior, and the other was Qiu Yu’s.

Just like Sheng An and Qiu Yu, they bickered constantly in their daily lives, but in the face of a major crisis, everything else was set aside.

Qiu Yu was also present. She had been reporting her work to Elder Li when the news arrived, and she had followed him there.

Wan Yuan’s face was pale. “Eight hours ago, feedback from the Scientific Research Team indicated that many of the meteorites in this batch in Shi City carried fragments. The high concentration of fragments has made the situation in Shi City dire.

“The area around the meteorites has been burned clean. The fires are spreading outward and are impossible to extinguish. Because the flames are sweeping through so quickly, they couldn’t even establish a firebreak.”

It wasn’t just that they couldn’t put out the fire; it wasn’t only Shi City that was burning. Even the areas surrounding Jing City were on fire. The weather was dry, and even if they mobilized all their forces, they couldn’t stop the spread.

Elder Zhang nodded and signaled for him to continue.

Wan Yuan said, “Therefore, the Scientific Research Team chose to enter Shi City by Helicopter. They landed near the meteorites, and after inspecting their condition, they prepared to take all of them away directly.”

Elder Li said, “That plan is sound. What happened next?”

Wan Yuan took a deep breath. “Six hours ago, they successfully bypassed the fires to approach the meteorites and found a suitable landing spot.

“Four hours ago, they sent their penultimate message. The Meteorite Fragments in Shi City are not only numerous but also large, causing massive changes to the terrain. They requested to establish a Meteorite Research Institute in Shi City.”

The meteorites were large and numerous. Many research institutes were built outside the shelters; not only were the meteorites themselves valuable for research, but the study of their impact on the Earth was also of great significance.

Wan Yuan continued, “Two hours ago, they sent their final message. They were sending Zhang Kun and Ke Jiaxue back first with the Meteorite Fragments and requested that we prepare for their arrival.”

He paused, his expression dark. “But after that, there was no further news. We have been constantly trying to contact everyone, but it’s like a stone sinking into the ocean. All communications are cut off. After repeated signal searches, we have confirmed-the helicopter transporting the Meteorite Fragments back was shot down shortly after takeoff.”

Elder Zhang and Elder Li’s hearts sank.

Disappearing right after takeoff meant they had been in trouble for two hours already.

“How can you be sure it was an ambush by Aberrants?” Elder Zhang frowned.

Wan Yuan pulled up various reports. “Because the returning helicopter suffered multiple types of attacks.”

It was already the Apocalypse.

With constant disasters outside, every helicopter they sent out on missions had undergone multiple modifications. They were incredibly hard and sturdy.
Furthermore, since the satellites had been destroyed, the Helicopter’s signal was being transmitted via the Core Shelter. They could infer what the aircraft had encountered based on the signal feedback.

When they couldn’t contact anyone else, whatever the Helicopter had encountered was effectively what the others had encountered as well.

Multiple attacks meant there was naturally more than one Aberrant.

After Wan Yuan finished speaking, the atmosphere grew increasingly heavy.

After a moment of thought, Elder Zhang said, “The Nation must send people to investigate immediately.”

Elder Li nodded, then shook his head. “I don’t object to sending people, but the Scientific Research Team dispatched this time includes five Superpower Users. Not counting the Space Ability user, the water and fire users are both high-level Superpower Users who awakened early. The crisis in Shi City is not simple. Acting rashly might result in even more casualties.”

Elder Zhang looked at him. “Time waits for no one. What if they aren’t dead yet and are waiting for rescue? We should send people immediately.”

Elder Li met his gaze. “What if they are already dead? How many more will we lose if we keep sending people? We should conduct an Investigation and analyze the situation before taking action.”

Their viewpoints differed, each with its own merits, and they fell into a standoff.

*Beep beep-*

A red light flashed on the large screen as Wan Yuan received the latest message.

“News just came in from C9 Shelter. Four Aberrants have escaped the Shelter, and they’re heading toward Shi City!”

He stared intently at the screen, his voice rough. “D3 has also sent word. Aberrants have escaped there as well.”

Usually, after Aberrants awakened, they either went into hiding or engaged in bloody massacres. This was the first time they had encountered Aberrants escaping in an organized manner. Without a doubt, they were all heading for Shi City.

Elder Zhang and Elder Li’s expressions instantly turned grim, filled with underlying anxiety and worry.

Qiu Yu took a step forward, eyes sharp. “Elder Li, let me go to Shi City to see exactly what happened.”

Outside the door, Sheng An’s voice rang out-

“I’ll go. Regardless of what happened in Shi City, or what is about to happen, an organized and coordinated action by Aberrants must be nipped in the bud.”

She walked in from outside, the wind from her stride catching the hem of her windbreaker. Her features were sharp and cold, radiating a murderous intent and a cutting edge.

Behind her followed the entirety of Group B, every member already in a state of combat readiness.

Their teammates were in Shi City. Whether they were alive or dead, they had to be brought back. They had to go get them.

Shi City.

Zhang Kun was panting heavily, his breath ragged. “Put me down. Split up and run. You have to find a way out and report what’s happening here.”

The armed escort this time was led by Captain Zhuo. He held his gun, his body covered in wounds, yet he still led his team to shield the few people in the middle.

Hearing this, his voice was hoarse. “No. Your Space Ability has the Meteorite Fragment in it. Since the Aberrants want to steal it, there must be a reason. We can’t hand it over to them.”

Liu Yue and Ke Jiaxue were in even worse shape-both of them had already burned through their strength. One of Liu Yue’s arms was fractured, and his clothes were smeared with blood and caked with dust. He looked miserable.

Liu Yue’s expression abruptly changed. “They’ve caught up-move!”

Captain Zhuo gritted his teeth and split what was left of his men in two. Pointing at one group, he ordered, “You escort Zhang Kun and Dr. Zhao’s people out! The rest stay with me!”

Liu Yue’s eyes went bloodshot.

They’d already lost too many. Did they still have to watch more people die?

He stepped forward, sensing energy slowly gathering inside him. His voice was steady. “I’ll stay too. You all go.”

“No-” Ke Jiaxue objected. “You go; I’ll stay. There’s fire everywhere-they need your Supernatural Ability.”

Captain Zhuo didn’t argue. He shoved them forward.

“Quit wasting time and move! You must get the Fragments and the information out!”
