Chapter 138

Sheng An and her team had a very unique mode of transportation.

Li Xin had crafted a specialized metal basket that was incredibly hard yet light. Although the “flying” dream Sheng An had once promised him hadn’t been realized yet, Li Xin was more than capable of creating an ultra-light metal.

The metal basket could hold over a dozen people, yet it weighed less than ten kilograms. The real weight came from the people inside.

Wu Buyu gripped the basket with his talons. Three people stood on his back: Sheng An, Qi Lingwu, and Yu Feng.

Yu Feng used his Wind Ability to buoy the metal basket, reducing its effective weight so that Wu Buyu could fly with it.

Qi Lingwu had his Supernatural Ability fully active, remaining on high alert for any unexpected incidents.

The entire team worked with seamless coordination.

After all, Yu Feng had only recently awakened, and his power wasn’t very strong. Fortunately, Song Linwei was positioned below him in the basket; he could use his Enhancement Ability to bolster Yu Feng. Together, their combined effort was greater than the sum of its parts, allowing them to sustain the flight for a considerable duration.

While they couldn’t maintain this pace for a long-distance journey, it was just barely feasible for the trip from Jing City to Shi City.

Sheng An remained silent throughout the flight.

Yu Feng was exerting a great deal of effort, and his face had turned somewhat pale.

“Sister Sheng, just how many Aberrants are in Shi City? Are Zhang Kun and the others still alive?” Yu Feng asked softly.

Sheng An shook her head.

After a long pause, she finally spoke. “I don’t know how many there are, but there will definitely be some very powerful Aberrants.”

“Hmm?” Yu Feng’s mind was sluggish from the constant use of his ability, and he didn’t quite follow. “You mean Aberrants that have been strong since the start of the Apocalypse?”

Qi Lingwu added, “She means Aberrants that were infected ahead of time.”

There was already a precedent for this, wasn’t there?

Hearing this, Yu Feng stiffened, his heart sinking.

It was true. There was no guarantee that Aberrants appearing before the official start of the Apocalypse hadn’t gone into hiding. As for how strong they could be, “Zhang Jialiang” had already shown them.

Yu Feng spoke again. “Zhang Jialiang’s Supernatural Ability was unique. Even if there are early-onset Aberrants, we have so many Superpower Users who awakened early. We’ll definitely be able to save the people and bring back the Fragments.”

These people had managed to intercept a Meteorite. If they moved out together, surely there was no Aberrant they couldn’t handle?

Sheng An didn’t answer.

She had a nagging feeling that Shi City wouldn’t be so simple this time…

Soon, they entered Shi City.

The Meteorite had left Shi City in ruins. Looking down from above, the scene was even more desolate. Almost the entire city had become a massive basin, with the Meteorite at its center.

The once-towering buildings and brilliant neon lights had been utterly destroyed, leaving nothing but a mess of wreckage.

With no time to dwell on the sight, Wu Buyu circled them through the air.

Qi Lingwu shook his head. “No one within range.”

Sheng An frowned and tapped Wu Buyu. Understanding the signal, he let out a long cry and expanded their search radius.

However, no matter how hard they looked, they couldn’t find a single person.

Shan Hua was quite bold, crouching right on the edge of the basket. The wind ruffled its fur, making it sway slightly.

Song Linwei glanced at the cat a few times.

This cat was remarkably calm, as if this wasn’t its first time going out on a mission with them…

Hao Jingye held a tablet, pointing to a specific spot. “Let’s land here and take a look.”

Wu Buyu descended.

The metal basket was set on the ground. He retracted his wings, and his talons transformed back into hands and feet as he landed.

Sheng An and the other two jumped down from his back.

The ground was somewhat hot. They could see the massive Meteorite in the distance, but other than that, there was nothing around them.

They carried specialized lamps that could shine a great distance, equipped with telescopic lenses that allowed them to see exactly what the light hit.

Hao Jingye held his laptop, scanning the ground and muttering, “This is where they lost contact. It doesn’t make sense. No matter what they encountered, there should be some trace left behind.”

It was truly strange.

If something had happened to the people-whether they were alive or dead-there should be someone here. At the very least, there should be some evidence of a struggle.

“It’s too dark. We might have to wait until dawn to check from the air to be sure no one is here,” Long Tianyu said, his brow furrowed. “Where on earth are they?”

“No, we can’t wait for dawn. Every second we wait is another second they’re in danger. As long as we haven’t found bodies, it means they’re still alive. We have to hurry,” Sheng An said calmly.
She hadn’t come just for the Investigation; she also wanted to save people.

Hao Jingye let out a long breath.

He turned the tablet toward Sheng An and pointed to two locations. “This is where the plane crashed, and this is where the second-to-last message was sent from. Let’s split up and search.”

Sheng An nodded in agreement.

She formed a group with Wu Buyu, Ji Yani, Zhuang Fan, and Long Tianyu, heading toward the location of the second-to-last message.

Qi Lingwu, Hao Jingye, Yu Feng, Song Linwei, and Li Wanyun took the cat and headed toward the crash site.

The sky was pitch black, filled with rolling smoke and dust. It was stiflingly hot.

The environment was extremely hostile to humans. Surviving in such conditions would be nearly impossible even without encountering external dangers.

The ground was devoid of any vegetation, nothing but a vast expanse of black.

Ji Yani’s voice sounded a bit muffled. “Jing City is in much better shape. I can’t believe it’s this bad out here. I wonder how the people in other Shelters are doing…”

This was their first time leaving Jing City since the apocalypse began.

It was their first time facing the world’s horrific transformation head-on. It had only been a few days-how could the world have turned into this?

Long Tianyu said, “They’ll survive. In my Previous Life, there were no underground Shelters, and the whole world looked like this. Everyone had to face these changes directly. Humanity will soon adapt to the new environment.”

He sighed. “However, the casualties were heaviest at the very beginning. Fortunately, the people of Shi City were moved to Jing City.”

He was a native of Shi City himself, so he knew all too well how tragic the situation had been there in his Previous Life. He was incredibly grateful that the Nation had relocated the residents to Jing City; this city was now a ghost town.

They swept their flashlights around, trying to find any traces.

Nearby, Zhuang Fan suddenly stopped and spoke up: “Here.”

Instantly, everyone gathered around.

Sheng An frowned slightly. There were spots of blood on the ground. It looked as if it had just dripped there, not yet fully dry.

Ji Yani cried out, “There’s some over here too!”

Sheng An went over immediately. Sure enough, there were several drops of red blood on the ground. They weren’t very noticeable against the black earth; if one weren’t paying close attention, they would have been easily overlooked.

She reached out and touched a bit of the blood, her frown deepening.

Human blood. And it was fresh.

They continued forward, finding occasional bloodstains. Sheng An’s brow furrowed tighter and tighter.

Soon, they discovered something behind a large Meteorite-

The lifeless bodies of Zhang Kun and the others.

When she saw the scene before her, Ji Yani’s eyes instantly turned red. Long Tianyu and Wu Buyu looked on with fury, their eyes nearly splitting, while Zhuang Fan clenched his hands into fists.

Academician Cheng, Dr. Zhao, Captain Zhuo, Zhang Kun, Ke Jiaxue, Liu Yue… every member of the Scientific Research Team was lying behind the Meteorite, surrounded by pools of blood. None of them were breathing!

Their eyes were wide open, as if they had died with deep regrets.

Ji Yani was on the verge of tears.

She couldn’t bear to look and turned her head away, her voice hoarse. “How could this…”

Only Sheng An kept her brow furrowed, staring intently at the scene.

-This wasn’t right.

She stepped forward. Long Tianyu and the others quickly followed. No matter how heavy their hearts were, they hadn’t forgotten that Sheng An’s Supernatural Ability hadn’t manifested yet; she was still technically an ordinary person.

Sheng An was inspecting them.

Suddenly, her eyes turned cold. “It’s a fake. The bodies look like they died recently, but Zhang Kun is a Space Ability user.”

When a Space Ability user dies, their stored supplies burst out.

Furthermore, she had long ago placed small, high-powered bombs inside the storage spaces of the two members with the Space Ability. The trigger for the bombs was simple: hitting the ground.

That meant as long as the supplies were expelled, there would be an explosion.

If someone didn’t know about the bombs beforehand and wasn’t prepared, they would likely be caught in the blast.

This was the final trump card of the two Space Ability users.

This place didn’t look like supplies had burst out, and there were certainly no signs of an explosion.

As Sheng An’s voice trailed off, there was no response. It was as if the world had suddenly fallen silent.

She whipped her head around. There was no one behind her!”
