Chapter 140

When the alarm blared, Li Xin and Gu Qiansheng leaped to their feet, standing before Jiang Yu with expressions of high alert.

Simultaneously, Wan Yuan’s voice crackled in their ears.

“Aberrants are attacking the various Research Institutes. Currently, the main firepower is concentrated on the Meteorite Research Institute. Protect Jiang Yu and the people from the Planting Research Institute.”

Gu Qiansheng replied, “Understood.”

The connection cut off; Wan Yuan was clearly moving on to communicate with others.

Jiang Yu frowned. “Is there more than one Aberrant?”

Gu Qiansheng’s voice was certain. “Definitely more than one. Don’t forget Li Huai; his transformation happened without a sound. After the Meteorite fell, Supernatural Abilities became strange and varied. Wu Buyu and Ruan Zifeng can’t possibly root out every hidden threat.”

From the moment Song Linlin told them that Li Huai’s transformation had been silent, it was inevitable that Aberrants were still hiding within every Shelter.

There might not be many in the Core Shelter, but they definitely existed.

They never underestimated the Aberrants.

Li Xin’s nerves were taut, his tension high and his eyes filled with worry. “I hope everything goes well for Sister Sheng and the others.”

*

Shi City.

These few Aberrants weren’t strong. Perhaps because she had no Supernatural Ability, the leader of this Aberrant operation had assigned her opponents who also lacked Supernatural Abilities.

In less than twenty minutes, Sheng An had dealt with them all.

Gripping her gun and knife, she moved forward slowly.

Even within an Illusion Realm, there was no need for her to remain stationary.

Sheng An’s footsteps were light. After walking for a short while, she suddenly stopped and raised her arm to parry. An afterimage appeared from the side, and as their arms collided, the opponent was forced back two steps.

“Fuck, this Aberrant is actually pretty strong,” a familiar voice rang out from the opposite side.

Sheng An turned, and the two looked at each other.

The searchlight overhead illuminated the face opposite her clearly. Both of them froze.

Ji Yani cried out, “Sister Sheng!”

She looked pleasantly surprised and hurried over. “Oh my god, you scared me to death! I just realized you guys were all gone, and the moment I turned around, several Aberrants attacked me. I barely managed to deal with them. What on earth is-”

She walked toward Sheng An, getting closer and closer.

With a flick of her wrist, a cold blade flashed, slicing across the throat!

Sheng An withdrew her hand, watching as “Ji Yani” stared with wide, incredulous eyes before vanishing on the spot.

“If you can’t kill me head-on, you start using tricks?”

Sheng An lowered her eyes slightly as the blood on the blade gradually disappeared. She murmured to herself:

“An Illusion Ability and many Aberrants. Step one: the Aberrants try to kill directly. Step two: the Illusion Realm itself has poor offensive power, so it can only manifest familiar people to launch sneak attacks when one’s guard is down. The next step will be to make our own people suspect each other and fight amongst themselves…”

Sheng An’s expression turned grim.

She had already guessed that the owner of the Illusion Ability was an Aberrant infected before the apocalypse. Even if it was only meant to ‘trap’ them, it was extremely troublesome. Combined with the fact that the opponent had helpers, this was much harder to deal with than Zhang Jialiang.

Within their team, the first step wasn’t a problem, but the second and third steps were impossible to guard against. They had to regroup as soon as possible.

An Illusion Realm was hard to break, but there had to be a flaw.

Even if there wasn’t one, they could create a gap. Now, it just depended on whether it would cooperate.

Meanwhile.

Qi Lingwu finished off “Song Linwei” and turned to look at the cat on his shoulder.

He frowned deeply. “Shan Hua, can you find a Loophole and lead me to Sheng An?”

Shan Hua had that ability.

But the problem was, it was just a cat. Could it actually cooperate with them?

The Calico Cat on his shoulder was surveying the surroundings. Its green eyes were particularly clear in the darkness, glowing with an eerie light that could make one’s skin crawl.

Hearing him, it raised a paw and patted Qi Lingwu’s shoulder before jumping down and walking in a specific direction.

Qi Lingwu was startled for a moment but immediately followed.

He kept a very close distance to Shan Hua. This time, as they moved forward, the scenery beneath his feet truly began to change.

It worked!

Qi Lingwu watched the cat walking ahead with practiced ease, his eyes filled with doubt.
It was truly cooperative.

It was as if they had worked together many times before…

Before the man and cat had gone far, they heard the sounds of battle. It was Long Tianyu and Li Wanyun, locked in a back-and-forth struggle. The location of their fight was very close to where Qi Lingwu had been standing just moments ago.

He hadn’t heard a sound earlier, but following Shan Hua, the noise was now crystal clear. It seemed they had indeed pierced through the Illusion Ability.

As for the two currently fighting, they had likely experienced fake teammates appearing, and now each suspected the other was an impostor.

Qi Lingwu had a high Ability Level and could tell that both of them were real.

However, he and Shan Hua didn’t stop, heading straight for Sheng An instead.

-These two were roughly equal in strength; they wouldn’t kill each other.

Besides, if he showed himself now, they might not believe he was real either. It was better to find Sheng An first.

Thus, the man and cat appeared silently and passed by just as quietly, unnoticed by the two in the heat of combat.

Long Tianyu snarled, “Fuck, this Illusion Realm is too damn persistent. It can even simulate that dead woman’s abilities?”

Li Wanyun countered, “Does it know I hate this guy the most? Is the Illusion Realm letting me vent my anger?”

She swung a Spatial Blade at him.

Long Tianyu used Flash to dodge, but he still took a hit.

*Damn, that was close. This Illusion Realm is terrifying!*

He suddenly Flashed next to Li Wanyun, raising his blade to strike.

Li Wanyun reacted quickly, narrowly avoiding the blow despite her injuries, and simultaneously struck back…

Too difficult to deal with!

This cursed Illusion Realm!

Qi Lingwu had already walked far away, and the sounds behind him vanished once more.

Just then, his ears twitched slightly.

It seemed as if a sound had pierced through all the illusions, reaching the deepest imprint in his mind.

It was Sheng An!

Qi Lingwu’s eyes lit up and then narrowed slightly. Instead of listening intently to the sound, he cleared his mind, trying not to listen at all.

Paradoxically, the faint, ethereal sound became even clearer.

Qi Lingwu’s steps became firm as he walked quickly toward the front left. Shan Hua walked ahead of him, moving in the same direction.

Sheng An curled her fingers, held them to her lips, and blew the Whistle Signal she and Qi Lingwu used for contact.

How did an Illusion Ability work?

It did nothing more than deceive their five senses and consciousness. Even if two people were very close, they wouldn’t hear each other’s movements or see one another.

Therefore, as long as one awakened the most instinctive cognition deep within the mind, ignored the deception of consciousness by the illusion, and bypassed the five senses, they could perceive the signals sent by the other.

The signal she gave was her location.

Soon, the sound of footsteps became clear. First, a cat appeared, followed by the person behind it.

Qi Lingwu’s eyes brightened. He quickened his pace, stepping past the cat to stride toward Sheng An. Sheng An lowered her hand and smiled.

The two shared a brief hug before letting go.

Shan Hua: “…”

Accustomed to such sights, the cat waited for them to separate before using the momentum to leap up onto Sheng An’s shoulder.

Qi Lingwu said, “I just saw Li Wanyun and Long Tianyu. The others are likely in trouble as well. This cat can find a Loophole. Should we find the others first, or…”

He didn’t finish the sentence, but she understood.

Sheng An looked at the cat on her shoulder.

It stood calmly on her shoulder, scratching its head with a paw, ears pricked as if waiting for instructions.

Sheng An remarked, “We’ll have to analyze this little fellow thoroughly after we get back.”

Shan Hua flicked its tail, its ears twitching slightly.

Sheng An took Qi Lingwu’s hand and stepped forward, her gaze sharp.

“We won’t look for the others first. Finding them one by one is too slow. We’ll go straight for the Aberrant creating the Illusion Realm. Once we kill the Aberrant, the Illusion Realm will naturally break. Shan Hua, lead the way.”

Shan Hua’s supernatural power enveloped Sheng An, and since Sheng An was holding Qi Lingwu, he was included in the range as well.

The cat raised its paw and pointed in a specific direction.

Sheng An and Qi Lingwu lunged in that direction at extreme speed.
