Twin Wolves - Chapter 2
Chapter 2
I sat blankly on the living room sofa until the middle of the night.
Time and again, I picked up the mirror, staring at the girl reflected within-her round face and dull skin. I had always thought my face was average, but now, the more I looked, the uglier I felt.
I set the mirror aside in disgust, only to find myself picking it up once more.
I thought of my cousin’s bright, dazzling smile.
I lowered my head, letting myself be swallowed by a wave of inferiority.
The sound of the door opening echoed through the room.
Luo Bei walked in, reeking of alcohol. He gave me a fleeting, indifferent glance before turning toward the bedroom.
I wiped my tears with the back of my hand and stood up. For the first time, I reached out and grabbed his tail, but he immediately slapped my hand away.
He took a step back, his voice freezing. “Don’t touch me.”
It was the exact same reaction as the first time I had tried to touch his wolf ears.
I had once thought his distance was just a result of a naturally cold personality, but in reality, it was simply his loathing for me.
And this was despite the fact that I had taken Luo Bei in and cared for him devotedly for thirteen years.
I couldn’t help but let out a self-deprecating laugh. It turned out that if you weren’t beautiful, your sincerity wasn’t even worth being taken seriously.
I didn’t know when my tears began hitting the floor. When I looked up again, I was the only one left in the living room.
My tears fell like broken strings of pearls, pitter-pattering without end.
A vast, silent despair enveloped me.
Inevitably, my mind drifted back to the garden parties the school used to organize.
Back then, I would find Luo Bei in the courtyard with a large pot of beef. “Luo Bei, can you come to the school garden party with me this time?”
Luo Bei would poke his head out of the swimming pool. “No.”
“But a lot of people are bringing their family’s beastmen.”
“I’m not going. If you want someone to take, you can adopt a new beastman.”
So, I went to every garden party alone.
I would stand in the corner, watching Luo Nan. He had the same face as Luo Bei, yet his smile was incredibly gentle.
Luo Nan would rub my cousin’s head and ask her, “Qingqing, do you want that teddy bear?”
Liu Qingqing would nod with a smile and stand on her tiptoes to touch Luo Nan’s wolf ears. Luo Nan always leaned down to make it easier for her.
I watched them like a thief, coveting my cousin’s life while terrified of being discovered.
But once, Chen Sian and his lackeys pushed me to the ground.
I panicked in that moment.
Chen Sian’s voice was filled with utter mockery. “Oh, isn’t this our class’s top student, Liu Yu? Why isn’t your little beastman out here with you?”
His lackey chimed in, “The beastman in Liu Yu’s house and the one in Liu Qingqing’s are Twin Wolves. But the older brother ended up with a great beauty, while the younger brother got stuck with a pancake-face. If I were him, I wouldn’t come out either.”
I refused to back down. Gritting my teeth, I stood up and swung at the lackey’s face.
After I knocked him to the ground, Chen Sian lunged at me to fight, but I pinned him down and thrashed him too.
The result was my parents being called to school.
I thought my mother would take my side.
Instead, she complained right in front of the teacher and Chen Sian, “Honestly, your classmate wasn’t wrong. Why did you have to go and hit him?”
I tugged at my mother’s sleeve and whispered, “Mom.”
As if she hadn’t heard me, my mother continued, “You’re not pretty to begin with, and you have such a foul temper. Even the beastman you’re raising doesn’t care about you. How did I give birth to such a bookworm? Sometimes, I really wish Qingqing was my daughter instead.”
I don’t know how I managed to run out of that office.
I only remember crying in the park all night. When I finally went home, I was greeted by a slap from my father.
And those words: “I really regret ever giving birth to a thing like you.”
