Chapter 2

“The last time Sir tried to cook, he nearly burned the kitchen down.”

Me: “Oh… it’s fine. He’s rich.”

If it burns down, we’ll just move.

The butler: “…”

An hour later, Jiang Ye emerged, his face smudged with soot, carrying the finished product.

It looked… okay. Probably not poisonous.

Just as I scooped up a spoonful of porridge and was about to put it in my mouth, he suddenly pressed down on my hand. “Wait.”

Jiang Ye meticulously picked out every tiny fragment of shell, tested the temperature, and only then handed the spoon back to me.

I deliberately frowned. “It’s too bland.”

His hand reached for the salt shaker but stopped mid-air. He turned around, opened his tablet, and began seriously searching for the recommended daily sodium intake for pregnant women.

Me: “…”

And so, I began a life of prenatal care comparable to that of an Empress Dowager.

In the early morning, I had orange juice hand-squeezed by the villain himself. When I bathed, he treated me like a fragile piece of porcelain. Even when I kicked him awake in the middle of the night due to leg cramps, he would give me a gentle massage.

One morning, I woke up in a daze to find him using a soft measuring tape to measure my waistline, his expression as solemn as if he were defusing a bomb.

“It’s only been a month. What could you possibly see?” I teased him on purpose.

The tips of Jiang Ye’s ears turned red, yet he insisted on recording the data into his phone’s memos under the title: *Merfolk Hatchling Observation Diary*.

The most ridiculous incident happened last week when a business partner came to the company to see him. When the security guard called for instructions, Jiang Ye was down on one knee tying my shoelaces.

I was sitting in a rocking chair, eating fruit he fed me while playing games on my phone.

He spoke coldly into the receiver, “Don’t bother me with this kind of thing in the future. My wife is taking a nap.” After hanging up, he casually tucked the blanket around my knees.

“You’re lying!” I glanced at him, raising an eyebrow.

Right now, I was lying on the terrace rocking chair, watching Jiang Ye set up a swing set in the garden.

The sunlight dyed the tips of his hair amber, making the scene look momentarily heartwarming.

The System suddenly popped up a notification: [Warning! The villain darkening value has dropped to 90%]

[Host…] Its voice was filled with confusion: [Are you sure this is how you save him?]

I smiled and touched the pearl necklace around my neck. “At least he doesn’t want to die anymore, right?”

Once Jiang Ye finished the swing set, I wiggled my feet. “Hubby, my leg is cramping.”

He wiped his hands clean, knelt on one knee, and massaged it for me.

System: “666!”

“Hubby, I want pink pearls.”

A while back, I saw a pink pearl at an auction; it was beautiful.

Unfortunately, it was bought by the male lead, Xu Yao, to make Chen Mengran happy.

“Cry for me.” I casually picked up the plate that had held grapes and held it under his chin.

Jiang Ye’s movements paused. He looked up, his deep-sea eyes filled with disbelief. “…The color of the pearls depends on a merman’s emotions.”

“I don’t care.” I patted my stomach and said slowly, “If you don’t cry, I’ll release all your hatchlings into the wild.”

His expression changed instantly.

Three minutes later, I watched in stunned silence as the big villain, who struck fear into everyone’s hearts outside, sat there with reddened eyes, pearls pitter-pattering down.

Light pink pearls rolled into the plate, making a crisp, pleasant sound.

The System suddenly chimed: [Villain darkening value has dropped to 85%]

I happily picked up the pearls.

This mission is way too easy. If this keeps up, I’m afraid Jiang Ye is going to be raised into a sweet, simple merman who does nothing but drop pearls.

However, just when I thought victory was in my grasp, Chen Mengran arrived.

She was wearing a plain white dress, her eyes red, standing at the villa entrance like a white rose wilted by the rain.

“Jiang Ye, I beg you, save my father…” her voice choked with sobs. “He’s been arrested, and only you can find him…”

I blocked the doorway and sneered, “Go find Xu Yao.”

Chen Mengran bit her lip, her tears falling even harder. “He doesn’t have those kinds of connections…”
