A Rose on Thin Ice - Chapter 1

The good news: I had transmigrated into a filthy-rich family.

The bad news: no one cared.

Ever since I was born, my domineering-CEO father and caged-bird mother had been acting out an endless cycle of she-runs-he-chases. I grew up clutching a bottle in the housekeeper’s arms.

Then came my third birthday.

In my sweetest baby voice, I told the handsome deliveryman bringing my cake, “Man, you have successfully caught my attention.”

The housekeeper went white with fear. He bit his nails and paced in circles before finally slapping his thigh.

“Young Miss, it is time you received the cleansing light of education.”

My eyes widened in disbelief.

The housekeeper seemed to have made up his mind. He was determined to return me to the thought patterns of an ordinary child.

And so, one morning, I shouldered an enormous backpack and said goodbye to the aloof Fu Sinian and the absentminded Shen Mo.

The door slammed shut behind me.

Faint voices drifted through it.

Shen Mo asked hesitantly, “Did you see that?”

Fu Sinian fell silent for once. “Mm.”

An eerie quiet filled the air.

Then, at the same time—

“Fu Yao—Yaoyao is going to school?!”

I sighed, clasped my hands behind my back, and slowly shook my head.

So they had finally noticed me.

My first day was only for registration.

When I came home early, the living room was a wreck.

Fu Sinian’s furious roar came from upstairs. “Why him, of all people?”

It took me a moment to remember what was happening.

Shen Mo’s best friend worked in the restaurant business. Her new place had opened today, and she had invited Shen Mo to show her support.

But Shen Mo had not asked Fu Sinian to go with her. She had invited the gentle second male lead, Ruan Jingtian.

I frowned as I recalled what came next in the novel.

Against Shen Mo’s will, Fu Sinian would exact a brutal sexual revenge. It would leave her with an ectopic pregnancy.

Afraid she might die in childbirth, he would force her to terminate the pregnancy. A surgical error would then cause irreversible damage to her body.

That was one of the main reasons Shen Mo tried to take her own life later in the story.

The commotion upstairs grew louder.

I tore free of the housekeeper’s hand, flung down my backpack, and charged up the stairs. The thunderous rattle of my extra-loud pellet drum rang through the villa.

I pounded on the door. “Daddy, open up!”

Fu Sinian soon opened it, his face thunderous.

I barreled past him like a launched missile and rushed to Shen Mo’s side.

Her clothes were only slightly rumpled.

I nimbly dodged Fu Sinian’s reaching hand and held up my drum. “Mommy, my teacher gave me a prize!”

Shen Mo froze and stared at me.

In all three years of my life, I had never descended from the heavens like this to rescue her from a waking nightmare.

I lifted her hand and placed it on my head, blinking up at her with grape-round eyes.

“Mommy, I was very good.”

Mist gathered in Shen Mo’s eyes.

She pulled me into her arms. “Yes. Yaoyao is a good girl.”

Once Shen Mo had calmed down, I turned to Fu Sinian. The rage in his eyes was gradually receding.

“Daddy, my teacher gave me a form for my parents. Can you sign it?”

Fu Sinian came back to himself and instinctively looked at Shen Mo.

She lowered her eyes, avoiding his gaze.

He silently turned his head away.

“Fine.”
