Wen Fu’s next lash was about to strike Qin Wan’s face. I raised my hand to stop it, but Meng Xun acted first. From a distance, he turned the whip back on itself and bound Wen Fu’s hands.

Of course you worried most about your own disciple.

Since Meng Xun had intervened as Qin Wan’s master to stop Wen Fu, the match counted as Wen Fu’s win.

Qin Wan knew she’d lost, but couldn’t help looking dejected. She returned to Meng Xun’s side holding back tears.

Meanwhile, Wen Fu and Nan Yu began arguing again.

“All you ever do is protect that bitch!”

“You’re completely unreasonable!”

“You used to say I was gentle and sweet. Ever since she arrived, everything’s changed!”

“What does that have to do with Wan? Why do you blame everything on her?”

“You’re even calling her Wan now?!”

Young people had so much energy. Fortunately, Shengyue wasn’t here today. If she’d seen her only two darlings arguing like this in public, she’d have been angry enough to spend three days in bed.

I was a grandmaster, after all. I ought to take some responsibility. So I beckoned to them. “You two. Come here.”

They fell silent at once.

Once they reached me, Nan Yu lowered his head without a word. Wen Fu pouted and looked at me, full of grievance.

“What’s all this arguing about?” Of course I knew what they were arguing about. But a respectable elder ought to hear no evil. Their argument should pass my ears without entering my brain.

In front of me, Nan Yu lost all his steam. He didn’t make a sound.

Wen Fu glared at him resentfully and sobbed, “Sect Leader, they’re all bullying me.”

You nearly disfigured her. Who was bullying whom, exactly?

I was usually easygoing, so Wen Fu wasn’t afraid of me. But she was too young to let such immature romantic troubles corrupt her character.

I made my face stern. “Was it right for you to attack a fellow disciple so viciously today?”

Perhaps Wen Fu had never seen me look so severe. For a moment, she didn’t dare answer.

This seemed to be working. I continued, “You’re a girl yourself, yet you aimed a whip at the face of a girl even younger than you. Is this what your master taught you?”

She was still only a young girl. Frightened, Wen Fu dropped to her knees in a daze. “Sect Leader, please don’t punish Master. It isn’t her fault. I was the one who behaved badly.”

She bit her lower lip, struggling not to let the tears gathering in her eyes fall.

I glanced at Nan Yu. “Nan Yu, the two of you are fellow disciples under the same master. Won’t it break her heart if you damage your bond over something like this?”

After dismissing them, I spoke to Wen Fu privately.

“Little Fu, you can’t tie down a man’s heart. If he doesn’t see you, even if you force him to be with you, he’ll still think about someone else. If he used to see you and then starts looking elsewhere, his eyes were crooked to begin with. A defective man like that isn’t worthy of our little Fu. There are plenty of good young men in the world. Cultivate well. Don’t let this little bit of romance trip you up. One day, I’ll take you out to see this great wide world.”

Every person in this sect was real to me. They had flesh and blood; they laughed and cried. To my eyes, Wen Fu was simply a slightly spoiled younger disciple. She wheedled and pouted at me. She worried about her master. I didn’t want her to become the kind of supporting character in a romance novel who destroyed herself through love and jealousy.

Each of them deserved to be the protagonist of their own fate.

Shaoyin gave me a sidelong look. “You’ve seen this great wide world. How come you haven’t found yourself a good young man?”

A good young man… Of course there was one. He just didn’t belong to me.

Over there, Qin Wan sat obediently beside Meng Xun. Sunlight shone on his gold hair crown, dazzling my eyes a little.

Shaoyin liked making one-sided jabs at me. She generally didn’t expect a reply. Now she watched the arena seriously and said, “That boy has good potential.”

There were two people in the arena. I knew at a glance which one she meant.

The boy in black wore his dark hair tied high. As he moved, a loose strand brushed his rosy, thin lips. His alluring eyes held a wild, irreverent smile.

“He certainly does have the makings of a wickedly charming CEO. I like him,” I said sincerely.

Shaoyin glanced at me. “I meant potential for cultivation!”

“Oh, oh.” His movements were agile. His spiritual power wasn’t high yet, but he controlled it with great precision. “He really is a promising youngster.”

When the match ended, I asked the boy to come closer.

He bowed without either servility or arrogance and introduced himself with perfect composure. Everything about him was impeccable.

There was nothing unusual about his background. He’d passed the standard admission assessment, came from an ordinary family, was nineteen, and was named Chao Xuan.

I secretly signaled to Shaoyin with my eyes. Look! Here’s that promising youngster who can replace you.

Shaoyin was unimpressed.

I’d have plenty of free time from now on. Why not have him join Wen Xin as a disciple, while I taught him on Wen Xin’s behalf for the time being?

The more I thought about it, the better it sounded.

“I see considerable potential in you,” I said. “As it happens, I have some free time lately. I wonder whether you might be interested in—”

“Master, there have been frequent disturbances at the foot of the mountain. The sect’s disciples are finding them difficult to deal with, and I can’t be everywhere at once. We need you to help. I’m afraid you won’t have much free time.”

Meng Xun rudely interrupted me, giving me a cold look.

I, the distinguished leader of the Xuanxiao Sect, had to go down the mountain personally to do missions and fight monsters? I clicked my tongue. “What kind of fight requires the sect leader herself?”

“Your disciple is inadequate. I was even injured on a mission a few days ago. I can only trouble you, Master.” Humble words, delivered with his usual indifference.

But… Meng Xun had actually been injured?

If someone with his current cultivation could still get hurt, the situation really must be difficult.

Fine. What could I do? I was a conscientious sect leader. “I’ll go down the mountain with you tomorrow.”

Having agreed, I turned back to Chao Xuan to continue my career in HR. “Although I may not be free just now, it doesn’t matter. First, I’ll—”

“Master.” Meng Xun stood beside my chair, looking down at me, and switched on the refrigeration again. “Shaoyin hasn’t taken a disciple yet. This one is talented. I think he should become hers.”

For once, Shaoyin didn’t snap back at being dragged into the conversation without warning.

Fair enough. She’d noticed him first. I couldn’t shortchange my own darling disciple just because I owed Wen Xin. I’d let Shaoyin have this budding CEO and find someone else for Wen Xin later.

I gave a suitably solemn nod. That settled it.
