The guy by the wall had a split lip and a cigarette between his fingers.

His pale eyes looked at me as if I were garbage.

Not a single hair on his body had anything to do with the word “soft.”

I gave him the middle finger right back.

“I’m waiting to see when you’ll die, you little bastard, so your daddy can come collect your body.”

The system shrieked inside my head as if it had exploded.

“Host, what are you doing? That’s your target! Have you lost your mind?!”

Jiang Jibai stubbed his cigarette out against the wall.

He walked over, seized me by the throat, and slammed me hard against the wall.

“Say that again?”

The web between his thumb and forefinger clamped tight around my throat. The smells of tobacco and blood flooded my nose.

“I’ll give you a chance to say it properly. Who did you call ‘Daddy’?”

I had a chest full of fury and nowhere to vent it, and now a punching bag had delivered itself to my door.

Back when I’d been a thug in my last life, I’d used every dirty trick in the book.

When it came to fighting, I’d never been afraid of anyone.

I jerked my knee up and drove it hard into the spot just below his stomach.

Jiang Jibai grunted and doubled over, fighting the pain.

I pressed down on his shoulders and slammed my knee into his stomach again.

I watched him slowly slide to his knees.

Crouching down, I patted his cheek.

“Call me Daddy, you little bastard.”

The system panel flashed.

【Jiang Jibai, Affection: −30】

The electronic voice held a calm sort of insanity.

【Congratulations, Host. You’ve set the worst first-day record in this system’s entire operating history.】

A beam of light swept over us, and several security guards charged our way.

“What are you doing?! What school are you from? Stay right there!”

Jiang Jibai’s expression darkened as he gave me the middle finger.

“Just you wait.”

I returned it without backing down, then turned and ran.

Only after losing the guards did I rub my aching neck.

Tsk.

Even swallowing hurt. He sure hadn’t held back.

And the system called him soft.

Fucking unbelievable.

On the very first day of my new life, I’d made a mortal enemy of my target.

To tell the truth, I’d only died two hours ago.

I clearly remembered jumping from a building, but when I opened my eyes, I was in a completely unfamiliar place.

【Congratulations, Host, on binding with the Reformation System! This system upholds truth, kindness, and beauty, and is dedicated to helping every poor little soul escape their suffering! Your target is…】

I cut it off impatiently.

“I’m not doing it. Kill me. Right here, right now.”

【Sorry, Host. You can only have your wish granted after successfully reforming your target.】

I took a deep breath.

“So what you’re saying is, if I don’t finish this bullshit mission, I’ll have to keep…”

【You’ll have to keep living, sweetie.】

Kiss my ass.

I was brimming with hostility and had nowhere to put it, while the person I was supposed to reform was a fucking lunatic.

With him like that, and this place like this, what was there to reform?

The information the system sent me gave me a rough idea of the situation.

This place was called Bincheng, a city by the sea.

But the sea was gray.

A revolting salty, fishy smell drifted off it.

The buildings were low and crowded, with alleys tangled between them as densely as blood vessels.

The place the system had arranged for me was on the fourth floor.

The stairwell reeked of cat piss and mildew.

A section of laundry pole stuck out from the floor above.

Faded underwear and towels hung from it, dripping water steadily down.

I’d never seen a place this rundown in my life.

My already rock-bottom mood finally erupted when the sound-activated light failed to turn on.

“Why the fuck do I have to do this bullshit mission? You think I won’t jump off the building right now?”

【You can give it a try, sweetie. Survival guaranteed!】

For fuck’s sake.

I forced down my disgust and climbed to the fourth floor.

The door was plastered with all kinds of little ads.

There was also chewing gum stuck there by some asshole.

It sat in clumps and patches, like irregular growths of lichen.

I couldn’t hold it in. I rushed to the bathroom and emptied my stomach.

Stupid fucking system. Stupid fucking place. It wouldn’t let me die, but it wouldn’t let me live properly either.

This was torture, plain and simple.
