Chapter 27

“Oh, right. They do a security check at the entrance. You must be carrying a lot of contraband, aren’t you?”

Before they went in, Yuan Fengying reminded him, “Also, if you fail once, they’ll refuse you the second time too. The guard will say he’s seen you before. So we’d better get through on the first try.”

Qin Xian nodded and asked, “Have you tried climbing over the wall?”

“Of course,” Yuan Fengying replied. “But when we climbed over, all we saw was a completely empty campus. There was nothing there. My guess is we can only get in by passing the security guard. By the way, we looked into it. That guard isn’t on the school’s employment roster. He appeared out of nowhere. If we try to grab him, our vision goes black and we end up back at the school gate.”

Remembering their previous failed attempts, she folded her arms and gave a cold snort.

“I’ll give it a try later… Speaking of which, what is that outfit?” Qin Xian asked.

Yuan Fengying had stepped away for a few minutes earlier and come back in a different set of clothes, but between the outfit and the wig… it was clear she was trying very hard to dress like a teacher. The problem was that she looked more like a rural schoolteacher from the sixties.

Yuan Fengying looked down at her old-fashioned floral dress and said awkwardly, “I didn’t have anything like what a teacher would wear, so I could only dig out something my mom used to wear… The wig is one I use for plainclothes surveillance… Does it not look like a teacher?”

“Teachers these days are actually pretty stylish,” Qin Xian said. “If the gate guard refuses you, you could try saying you’re cafeteria staff.”

Yuan Fengying gave a dry laugh. After thinking it over for a moment, she actually felt that cafeteria staff might be a viable option.

“If I really can get to the cafeteria, at least I won’t have to worry about weapons.”

Qin Xian gave her a thumbs-up. “Smart. Remember to grab two for me.”

Yuan Fengying nodded, then headed toward the school gate ahead of him.

Ten minutes later, she still hadn’t returned. It looked like she had successfully entered the school.

Qin Xian did not clear the contraband out of his backpack. He walked straight toward the guardhouse.

The moment he stepped inside, the surrounding environment noticeably changed. The noise of the city vanished completely. Everything around him fell silent, without the slightest trace of life, muffled as if he had walked into a giant glass dome.

The doors and windows of the guardhouse before him were shut tight, and the inside was pitch-black. Yet when he’d looked from outside just now, the lights had clearly been on. This place was already the entrance to the Domain.

“What are you here for?”

A hoarse male voice rang out. A sturdy security guard suddenly walked out of the guardhouse. His cap covered his eyes, but there was a fishy stench clinging to him. It wasn’t obvious at first, but once noticed, it became more and more nauseating.

Qin Xian answered, “The college entrance exam is coming up. My family kicked me out and told me to go to school.”

As he spoke, he kept both hands in his pockets, looking utterly arrogant. He looked exactly like a problem student, the very picture of a school tyrant.

But the guard said, “You are not a student of our school. We do not need students like you.”

Qin Xian leaned close to his face, pointed at himself, and asked, “Do I not look like a student? Fine, actually, I’m twenty-seven.”

“Irrelevant personnel are to leave at once!” The guard’s voice was as cold as a corpse.

Qin Xian smiled. “I really can’t go in?”

After saying that, he tore off the bandage covering a wound on his body. His expression stayed calm as he used his fingernail to pick open the not-yet-healed injury. Scabs wedged under his nail, and blood welled from the wound and dripped down.

Qin Xian raised his hand and held two bloodstained fingers in front of the guard, waiting for its reaction.

The guard immediately took a greedy, deep breath, swallowing over and over. Ah… what a wondrous scent. This human was strong. The stronger he was, the more delicious he would be. Unfortunately, with its status, it had no right to touch this ingredient.

Forcing itself to endure, it said, “You may enter. However, you need an identity.”

Qin Xian asked in return, “Then what do you think I look like?”

The guard slowly spat out two words. “A teacher.”

“A teacher? What do I teach?”

“You’ll know once you’re inside.”

The gate guard split its mouth into a grin, its tongue flicking as it opened the door for Qin Xian.

“I hope you live a little longer. Heh heh heh. Though it would be nice if you died, too…”

Qin Xian couldn’t even be bothered to look at him. Carrying his bag, he walked straight into the campus.
The school inside the Domain was completely different from the outside world. The sky above the teaching building was an ominous dark red, and every so often a breeze would sweep through the school, carrying a faint smell of blood.

There were many messy noises inside the school, most of them coming from voices that still sounded a little immature, like teenagers in the throes of puberty. Some people were crying, some were arguing.

Qin Xian walked along the road until he reached the first building. A large sign on it read “Comprehensive Building.”

What was chilling was that this building had already been cordoned off. There was a large pool of blood beneath it, along with drag marks.

Someone had died here, but the body had only been hastily dealt with. The remaining blood had been left completely unattended and had already turned dark red. There were also messy bloody footprints nearby.

The senior-year students were basically all gathered in No.3 Teaching Building. Qin Xian walked through the huge campus for seven or eight minutes before he finally got close.

Just as he was about to enter the building, two people dressed as security guards suddenly blocked his way.

They looked exactly the same as the security guards at the school gate, so they were probably mass-produced little monsters. The two of them sized Qin Xian up and down before asking, “Are you the new teacher?”

Their voices came from a bizarre place-not from their mouths or throats, but seemingly from under their hats.

Qin Xian remained calm and replied, “Yes.”

“Do we still need teachers?” one security guard asked its companion.

The other answered, “Of course we do. Two died last night, and nearly twenty were captured. They don’t support the current teaching philosophy and still wanted to resist, heh.”

“Such outdated educational thinking. Do they really think society still goes for that stuff now? Our current teaching philosophy and content are the most suitable, the best at helping children avoid getting screwed over in the future!”

“Exactly, exactly.”

Seeing the two of them start rambling about the current education system, Qin Xian interrupted, “Oh? I’d really like to see that for myself.”

The two security guards immediately shut up and looked at the human who had cut them off with obvious dissatisfaction.

“Heh. Then I hope you really do learn and teach well. Otherwise, we do have a punishment system.”

“Everything is for the sake of educating outstanding people, heh heh heh. Come with us. You need to go see the dean first.”

Qin Xian followed behind them, turning his head slightly to carefully observe the teaching building beside him.

The students were all staying in their classrooms at this time, and noisy sounds kept coming from the building.

City No.1 High School was an old school with a history of a hundred years. The buildings were very archaic, and the camphor tree branches nearby spread out to cover most of the sky.

The campus environment had originally been quite nice, but now ugly slogans had been freshly graffiti-ed onto the white walls of the teaching building: Be stingy, be harsh, live a joyful life; selfishness is humanity’s true nature; the strong allocate resources, the weak submit to the strong.

Qin Xian frowned.

What kind of garbage slogans were these? But at a glance, they did sound a lot like some of the darker rhetoric on the modern internet. There would definitely be people who supported this kind of thinking, but if everyone really took it as their life creed, then society would become utterly hellish.

“Alright, we’re here. This is the Academic Affairs Office.”

The two security guards took Qin Xian to the office door, then turned and left. Qin Xian didn’t knock; he just walked straight in.

By the desk sat a boy who looked to be only seventeen or eighteen. A cigarette dangled from his mouth, and he had his feet carelessly propped up on the office desk. His still-youthful face was trying hard to imitate the arrogant expression of a bad adult in power.

When he saw Qin Xian come in, he didn’t even bother to put his feet down and asked directly, “Oh? You’re the new teacher?”

Qin Xian asked, “You’re the dean?”

The boy’s face instantly darkened. He flicked the cigarette butt straight at Qin Xian and cursed, “Fuck your mother. What, I don’t look like it? Looking down on me? But from now on, you have to listen to me!”

This kid was like a barrel of gasoline-just a spark and he’d explode. Irritable, rebellious, and self-centered.

Qin Xian couldn’t be bothered to lecture him, and he didn’t want to make too much noise right from the start and trouble himself. In fact, kids like this were easier to deal with. He answered calmly, “Oh. Then what arrangements do you have? What subject am I teaching?”

Sure enough, seeing that he wasn’t arguing back, the boy immediately lost interest.

“Anything. Pick whichever subject you want, anyway.”
He tossed over a class schedule.

Qin Xian opened it and took a look.

Required: The Art of Internet Slang, Male-Female Relations, Violent Aesthetics, Criminal Arts, Religion.

Electives: Scam Studies, Unspoken Rules, PUA Methodology.

Well. This curriculum was really…

“So which subject are you choosing to teach?” the boy asked. “Let me warn you up front: you have to teach according to the course standards. If we find out you’re teaching some other positive crap, you’re dead.”

Qin Xian pointed at the words “Violent Aesthetics” and said, “This one suits me.”

The boy leaned in for a look, clearly unconvinced. “You can teach this? A pretty boy like you knows how to fight?”

But the second the words left his mouth, Qin Xian kicked his chair.

With a thump, he toppled straight off it, clutching his butt as his features twisted together in pain.

It took him several seconds to recover. Then he shot to his feet in a rage and swung a fist at Qin Xian. “You’re asking for a beating!”

Qin Xian easily caught his fist with one hand. Then he gripped the boy’s wrist bone and twisted hard.

“Ah!” The boy’s hand immediately drooped. It was dislocated.

“Shh.” Qin Xian covered the boy’s mouth with one hand and said, “Don’t scream. Am I qualified for this subject now? Agree, and I’ll put it back for you.”

The boy nodded frantically without the slightest hesitation.

With a crack, the dislocated bone was successfully set back into place.

The boy collapsed on the floor from the pain. He still wanted to keep cursing, but the moment he saw Qin Xian’s eyes, he instantly chickened out.

“Fine, fine, fine. You can teach this. You can go to class right now! Class 2212 on the third floor. That class doesn’t have a teacher, so just go straight there!”

Qin Xian did not move. He stood where he was and continued questioning him. “Who made you the dean of discipline? How did you get the position?”

The boy’s expression soured, but he did not dare show Qin Xian any attitude. He answered obediently, “They said they needed someone to stay here and manage the students and teachers as dean of discipline. I said I wanted to do it, so they let me stay. That’s all.”

“They?”

“I don’t know them. They should be the people who occupied the school, I guess. They all wear masks and act all mysterious…”

He looked completely lost. Even when Qin Xian pressed further, he could not provide any valuable information. From the looks of it, this kid had simply been tossed here at random…

Qin Xian glanced around the kid’s office. A pack of cigarettes and a lighter sat on the desk.

Seeing him eye his precious treasures, the boy immediately stuffed the cigarettes into his pocket. “What? I’m the dean of discipline now. It’s not against the rules for me to smoke.”

A ridiculous kid. An inexplicable arrangement.

Qin Xian asked, “Since you’re the dean of discipline here, do you know what your job is?”

The boy looked a little blank. “Uh, arrange the class schedule, and if any new teachers come in, just assign them a random subject. Also, I can punish students who break the rules however I want…”

“Oh.” Qin Xian suddenly put on a friendly expression. “From now on, unless it’s something that will cost you your life, don’t leave this office lightly. If I run into you outside, I’ll beat your face to pulp in front of your classmates.”

With that, he slammed his fist into a nearby desk. The wooden surface instantly shattered and caved in.

“Holy shit! Superman!” the boy cried out, but under Qin Xian’s terrifying stare, he immediately chose to shut his mouth.

After teaching the brat a lesson, Qin Xian left the academic affairs office. He followed the stairs up to the third floor. First, he stopped at the rear door of Class 2211 and chose an angle that would make it difficult for anyone inside to notice him as he observed the room.

A potbellied middle-aged man stood on the podium, speaking at length to the students below about physiology.

But unlike normal sex education, the things coming out of his mouth were filthy beyond belief. Most of the students below the podium looked awful, and some were clamping their hands tightly over their ears.
