At that, Qin Xian raised his chin and sniffed as well. His nasal passages stung a little, but his reaction was nowhere near as severe as the Student Council President’s.

Still…

A subtle suspicion came over him.

Qin Xian pointed downstairs. “Come on. We need to go help.”

The Student Council President paused, lowering the hand over his nose. He answered with his usual careless air, “I don’t think they need us. Listen—that policewoman is still directing the fight. Of course they packed gas masks in their field kits. The two of us don’t have any protection at all. If we go in, we’ll be streaming tears and snot. Is that really what you want?”

Qin Xian smiled wickedly. “And if I order you to go down right now?”

The president smiled back. “You really are vicious. You just want to see me make a fool of myself. But what choice do I have, when I like you so much?”

With that, he actually walked down the stairs, brushing past Qin Xian as he descended.

Qin Xian watched in silence.

The president’s chest did not rise or fall in the slightest.

The bastard was holding his breath to keep from inhaling the irritant.

Or perhaps he did not need to breathe at all.

Before he made it all the way down, Yuan Fengying and the others charged up through the smoke. The instant she saw Qin Xian, she spun and fired several shots downstairs.

The Student Council President quietly retreated to Qin Xian’s side, wearing a grin that made Qin Xian’s teeth itch.

Yuan Fengying’s voice came muffled through her mask. “Be careful. There are eight of them, and every one has a gun. We’ve taken two already. Do you need them?”

“I’m not much of a shot.” Qin Xian shook his head and looked at the Student Council President.

The president spread his hands. “I only just turned eighteen.”

Qin Xian and Yuan Fengying both fell silent for a moment.

“Then I’ll keep them. Watch yourselves. They’re bound to—”

Before Yuan Fengying could finish, two bullets whistled toward them. They struck the window behind her, showering the floor with shattered glass.

Several officers immediately raised their shields and enclosed Qin Xian and the Student Council President, retreating slowly with the two protected at their center.

Six enemies mounted the stairs, advancing step by step with their weapons raised.

“Give up! You’re out of bullets, and we’ve still got plenty!” One man walked forward with a laugh.

Bang!

Before he could get close, he stared in disbelief at the bloody hole that had appeared in his thigh.

“Aaaagh!”

“They still have ammunition! Shoot!”

The others descended into chaos. They raised their guns and reached for the triggers, but the shadow of a whip flashed before their eyes. Flesh split open across the backs of their hands, and the guns fell to the floor.

The police advanced behind their shields, forcing the men against the wall. Then they turned their guns on them.

With nowhere left to retreat, the six men huddled together, their faces grim.

“What do we do?! Brother Huang, don’t you have that thing the Cult Leader gave us?!”

“We were told not to use it unless absolutely necessary. It has side effects…”

“How is this not necessary?!”

Yuan Fengying frowned. “Don’t move! Stop resisting, put your hands behind your heads, and crouch down! Otherwise—”

“Yuan Fengying, get back!”

“Fuck this! Kill them!”

Brother Huang did something. Black fog suddenly poured from his body, bringing a stomach-turning stench with it.

Yuan Fengying immediately retreated, but something inside the fog still tore a wound in her arm so deep that bone showed through.

Qin Xian watched warily.

More than a dozen pairs of eerie green eyes lit up in the darkness. Cats emerged around the cultists—more than a dozen of them, all visibly mutilated by abuse. Some had half their limbs cut away. Others had been sliced open across the belly, their entrails trailing outside.

It hurt simply to look at them.

Brother Huang, who had summoned the creatures, was ecstatic.

“Hahaha! It’s real! I can control ghosts! The Cult Leader was right!”

His companions showed nothing but envy.

“We did exactly the same things. Why didn’t we get that power?”

Brother Huang shot them a cold warning glance. He climbed to his feet and ordered the cat monsters, “Go! Claw all of them to death!”

“Meow…”

But at the sound of his voice, the monsters did not attack his enemies.

They turned in perfect unison and fixed their green eyes on Brother Huang and the others.

An icy chill crawled from the base of his spine to his scalp. Brother Huang’s expression changed.

“Go! Go kill them! Obey me!”

His voice seemed to strike a nerve in the monsters. They went berserk.

Their backs arched. Sharp claws scored the floor. Then they sprang at the cultists.

The first cat flew straight at Brother Huang’s eyes. Before he could react, it reached out and scooped.

A bloody eyeball rolled across the floor. It even drew the attention of another cat monster, which batted it between its paws like a toy.

Brother Huang collapsed screaming under his companions’ horrified stares. The scent of violence brought out the monsters’ savagery. Their bodies flew up and down, spraying fresh blood across the wall until it covered even the students’ graffiti.

Yuan Fengying stared at the scene in shock, then looked at Qin Xian. “This…”

Qin Xian shook his head. “We can’t save them. If we go over now, the cats will attack us too. Nothing can interrupt this kind of revenge.”

“They abused those cats?”

Disgust crossed Qin Xian’s face. “Mm-hm.”

“Then… do we wait until they’re dead before going over?”

“No. I’m afraid we’re about to fight a miniboss.”

“What?”

Yuan Fengying turned back to the carnage.

Under the relentless assault, the Ghost Path cultists’ clothes had been reduced to rags. Wounds deep enough to expose white bone covered their limbs and torsos. Their blood vessels had been dragged out in the cats’ teeth and torn apart, gushing onto the floor.

Their eyes were gouged out. Their noses were bitten off. Before long, they could no longer even scream.

Minutes later, they stopped moving entirely.

The cat monsters tearing at the bodies gradually stilled. They stared at the scene as if dazed…

Then they dissolved into pools of blood and fused with the six corpses.

Qin Xian’s expression sharpened. “Here it comes.”

Yuan Fengying and the other officers prepared themselves.

Under their watch, the corpses suddenly began to move. Throats that should have been ruined released fresh, heartrending screams.

Then metal skewers, chopsticks, needles, and razor blades burst from their mouths, their crotches, their empty eye sockets, and every other part of their bodies. Their skin scorched black. Flames ignited across them.

One officer cried out, “Oh my god! What the hell is that?!”

Yuan Fengying reacted at once. “Xun, Yu! Shields in front! Everyone else, open fire! Cover Mr. Qin and the others—watch your aim!”

The men, now transformed completely into anomalies, climbed to their feet. With a swing of their arms, the skewers and blades embedded in their flesh flew toward the group.

The two officers in front immediately raised their shields. Yet the blades and skewers struck with more force than bullets. Metal skewers punched straight through, their tips jutting from the rear.

“Holy—”

One skewer opened a small hole in an officer’s hand.

Qin Xian observed carefully. The moment the blades were launched, new ones grew from the same spots.

There would be no exhausting their ammunition, as he had done with the spider.

He turned to Yuan Fengying. “I’ll draw their attention. See if headshots work.”

He and the Student Council President charged out, one to either side. They ran up the walls as if gravity did not exist, leaping high over the stairwell.

The anomalies turned in unison.

Bang-bang-bang!

Several shots rang out. Bullets tore through their skulls, leaving bloody craters behind.

Qin Xian wiped brain matter from his cheek. His whip coiled around one anomaly’s neck, and with a vicious pull, he tore its entire head away.

The headless anomaly did not fall.

The severed stump of its neck squirmed, and a cat’s head rapidly grew in its place.

A rotting feline skull now sat atop the bloody wreck of a human body. Half an ear still twitched on top. On a living kitten, that movement would have been irresistibly adorable.

On this thing…

It made everyone’s skin crawl.

Bang! Bang!

“Don’t stop! Keep firing! Aim for the other vital points!” Yuan Fengying shouted with her gun raised.

But the six anomalies seemed to have entered a second form after growing their cat heads. Their agility was nothing like before.

One leapt, spraying bits of flesh as its body soared nearly two meters through the air and dropped behind the shields.

It immediately reached for the frozen officer with one claw.

Qin Xian arrived at the critical moment and lashed it into the wall.

“Meow!”

“Mrrrraaaow!”

The cat monster snarled and climbed to its feet. Together with its five companions, it rushed forward in an encircling formation.

Qin Xian widened the arc of his whip. Black afterimages flashed through the air, beating the anomalies back before they could close in.

The Student Council President, meanwhile, had acquired an iron bar from somewhere. He ambushed one cat monster from behind and drove the bar through its back. He kept pushing until the creature was flattened against the floor, then pinned it into the concrete.

To keep it from breaking free, he bent the end of the bar with his bare hands.

“AAAAAAAH!”

The monster shrieked and struggled desperately where it lay impaled.

Qin Xian spotted the problem at once. “They’re terrified of being pierced by sharp objects! It may be connected to how the cats were tortured before they died!”

Yuan Fengying and the others understood.

“We’ll use the shields to hold them off!” she called. “You two find something sharp!”

“There’s an iron gate in the hallway upstairs,” the Student Council President said.

He and Qin Xian immediately rushed up. Sure enough, a gate meant to keep students out had been installed across the middle of the corridor.

Several vertical bars were corroded with rust. Qin Xian stepped forward and kicked one heavily several times until it fell free.

He slammed it against the floor twice more, warping one end into a point.

A perfectly serviceable sealing weapon.

There were six cat monsters. One had already been pinned, so the two men hurriedly prepared five iron stakes and returned to the fight. Several officers had been injured in their absence.

“Move!”

Qin Xian took a step back, broke into a sprint, and leapt down all ten steps of the staircase.

Yuan Fengying hastily cleared the way. Qin Xian risked the flames and stamped one cat monster beneath his foot, then drove the iron bar through its body.

The blades protruding from the creature sliced his hand. His expression did not change.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “But it’s better to end your suffering sooner.”
