I cleaned myself up as fast as I could.

When I reached her room, my young mistress was quietly reading a book.

Dressed in white, her eyes lowered, she looked like a poem made into a painting.

Her sleeve had slipped to her elbow, revealing a length of arm as smooth and lustrous as white jade.

She was more radiant than the moonlight outside.

Seeing me, she set the book casually on the table.

I went over and lifted her out of her wheelchair.

Whenever I held her, she instinctively hooked both arms around my neck so she wouldn’t fall.

She knew perfectly well I would never drop her.

But her body reacted that way all the same.

Her palm rested against the side of my neck.

At those moments, I always slowed my steps on purpose.

I wanted to hold her a little longer.

Her hair brushed my cheek.

I could smell the clean fragrance of soap pods.

My young mistress and I were so close.

I was endlessly grateful to be a woman.

It was only because I was a woman that I could be this close to her.

She never let men near her.

Even in that, she was just like the Divine Sovereign.

Immortal Manor was the intelligence arm of the Changming Order. Because my mistress had shown extraordinary intelligence as a child, Lady Jinzhu, the Divine Sovereign’s protector, had personally appointed her its young mistress.

Even though her legs were already crippled at the time.

Lady Jinzhu cared nothing for her disability.

She had stroked her head and smiled. “I like clever people. And you remind me a little of the Divine Sovereign in her younger days.”

That was high praise indeed.

For Ye Changming, the Divine Sovereign, was a legend no one could surpass.

She had begun with nothing. Yet in a few short years, she had risen from a beggar anyone could trample on to the Divine Sovereign who commanded eternal life.

Her Changming Order reached everywhere. Her believers permeated the entire country. She had controlled the court for years, and no one dared question her decisions.

She had raised the late empress, then the grand princess, to the throne before withdrawing to the Sacred Mountain. She had never descended again.

Since then, the throne had changed hands and the court had been shaken by turmoil. The present emperor was the late empress’s youngest son.

Everything changed. Only the Divine Sovereign’s authority, and Lady Jinzhu at her side, remained the same.

Lady Jinzhu still appeared from time to time to convey divine decrees on her behalf.

And the most astonishing thing about Lady Jinzhu was…

After all these years, she was still so young.

Time seemed to have stopped for her.

Through that strange fact, people caught a tiny glimpse of the Divine Sovereign’s unfathomable power.

Even her protector did not age.

Then what of her…?

Whenever people saw Jinzhu’s youthful face, their awe of the Divine Sovereign deepened despite themselves.

Now the Changming Order was choosing a new leader.

The three young heads of Immortal Manor, Nethermarsh, and the Guixu Bureau were all candidates to succeed her.

My young mistress had the weakest body and the strongest support.

She was simply too much like Ye Changming.

And she was different from the other two. Her name was Ye Feisheng. The Divine Sovereign had personally bestowed that surname upon her.

That gift alone placed her above the others in the believers’ hearts.

It also made her the target of more attacks.

The young heads of Nethermarsh and the Guixu Bureau seemed to be forming an alliance. Apparently, they planned to bring her down first, then fight it out between themselves.

Whenever I saw them attack and slander her, I wanted to draw my sword, storm both their headquarters, and kill the lot.

She had saved my life. I would gladly let myself be torn to pieces for her.

But she wouldn’t let me.

…She was simply too softhearted.
