Chronicles of Heaven's Chosen - Chapter 36
Yuan Yao watched the small Spirit-Gathering Formation nervously.
It soon became clear that she had failed.
Undiscouraged, she tried again and again.
At last, on her fifth attempt, the Spirit-Gathering Formation began to turn.
Delight spread across her face.
The spiritual energy at the bottom of the lake rapidly streamed toward the formation, gradually gathering into a small whirlpool.
As the vortex grew, Yuan Yao realized how serious the consequences could become and immediately dissolved the formation.
Before the unidentified object could speak to her, she rushed back to her rock, sat down, and closed her eyes.
The unidentified object was baffled.
After that, Yuan Yao woke every hour to construct a different formation on the lakebed.
One sent a tornado whirling through the water. Another made flames blaze beneath the lake. Then came lightning and thunder, spikes of ice, and drifting ghosts…
The unidentified object could only stare, dumbfounded.
Elsewhere, the ghost-masked youth sat silently in a pavilion.
Every so often, a tremendous noise rolled toward him from the distant lake, as though something were stirring up chaos on its bottom.
The ceaseless disturbance grated on his nerves.
Xie Yan knew the secret treasure was hidden on the far side of the lake.
To reach it, however, he first had to cross the water.
Several two-hour periods had passed since he nearly drowned. That little trash was somehow still at the bottom of the lake, causing one deafening commotion after another.
What was she doing down there?
Xie Yan slowly lifted his eyes toward the lake.
Another burst of noise came from its direction.
He rose and vanished from the pavilion.
An instant later, he stood on the shore once more. The once-crystal-clear water was now heaving and churning.
His brows drew faintly together.
His curiosity sharpened. What could she possibly be doing to throw an entire lake into this state?
After a while, the water gradually calmed.
Xie Yan withdrew his gaze and turned his attention to the Treasure Pavilion on the opposite shore.
He glanced once at the lake, then leaped. His toes skimmed the surface, and moments later, he landed on the far bank.
He entered the Treasure Pavilion without delay.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the lake, Yuan Yao had mastered several formations and could finally understand every formation recorded in the *Heaven-and-Earth Formation Diagram*.
She turned to page thirty-six.
There it was: the formation totem sealing the unidentified object, complete with the location of its nexus.
After studying it carefully, Yuan Yao finally understood how to break the formation without wasting any strength.
She opened her eyes and told the unidentified object, “I’ll break the formation now.”
It trembled with excitement.
Yuan Yao first formed a hand seal from all five elemental energies. Five-colored light radiated from it as it moved toward the left side of the sealing formation.
“Phantom Spirit, go!”
Whoosh!
The Phantom Spirit Sword shot through the five-colored seal and plunged straight into the formation.
Clang!
Crack—
The sealing formation shattered in an instant like a glass mirror struck by a hammer.
At that exact moment, the countless binding chains began shaking violently. They tightened around the unidentified object as though trying to destroy it.
The three Saint-grade talismans also swelled on the verge of detonation.
Yuan Yao was caught completely off guard.
She could sense the unidentified object’s anguished roars.
She immediately recalled the Phantom Spirit Sword and swam upward.
The unidentified object felt her moving away and believed she had betrayed it. It thrashed in agony, making the chains collide with ear-splitting clangs.
A terrifying pressure engulfed the entire lake.
Once Yuan Yao had put some distance between them, she abruptly turned and shouted,
“Idiot!”
“Stop moving!”
Her words slowly pulled it back to reason.
Through every restraint and obstacle, it “saw” her.
Her face was grave. In her hand, she held a brilliantly colored longsword whose light curved beautifully through the water.
Her voice reached it.
“Remember this. Once I save you, you’re mine!”
As the last word fell, she drew a finger across the Phantom Spirit Sword. Blood instantly stained the blade. Then she raised it overhead with both hands.
The Phantom Spirit Sword expanded with a violent surge, becoming enormous.
Its many-colored blade turned scarlet, as though forged in flame, and shone with the molten glow of magma.
“Thousand Mountains, One Sword—”
“Sever the Ages, Sink the Ark!”
Yuan Yao gripped the hilt in both hands and brought the massive sword crashing toward the three Saint-grade talismans.
“Break!”
Like a meteor tearing across the heavens, the Phantom Spirit Sword struck the talismans with thunderous force.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
All three talismans exploded beneath the blow. The resulting shock wave swept across the lake with the force of collapsing mountains and overturning seas.
The water boiled violently beneath the impact.
A towering wall of water rose from the lake and crashed toward the shore.
The blast hurled Yuan Yao backward as well. Her chest tightened, and fresh blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.
The currents twisted so chaotically that she could not see what was happening below.
But she could feel it.
The thing was about to break free.
Crack! Crack!
Countless binding chains shattered.
Then a burst of golden light erupted from the depths.
It was blinding.
Yuan Yao’s face had gone deathly pale. She raised a hand to shield her eyes.
Through her fingers, she saw a mass of golden light drawing closer.
With it came an immense pressure.
At last, she saw what it was.
A gigantic golden egg.
Yuan Yao’s eyes lit up, and she swallowed reflexively.
She wanted to eat it.
The golden egg sensed her thoughts and fled from the lake in terror.
Yuan Yao hurried after it.
When she broke through the surface, she called helplessly, “I won’t eat you. I really won’t.”
System 250 had told her she had choked to death after eating ten bird eggs. How could she possibly dare eat another?
Even if this golden egg looked absolutely delicious.
It hovered high in the air, refusing to come down.
“Come here,” Yuan Yao said.
The golden egg shook from side to side.
—No.
“So you’re casting me aside the moment I’ve served my purpose?” She glared at it. “Do you believe I won’t build another formation and seal you again?”
She was nowhere near capable of constructing such a high-rank sealing formation, of course. She only wanted to frighten the egg.
From the upper floor of the Treasure Pavilion, the ghost-masked youth witnessed the entire scene.
His gaze settled on the golden egg, and his eyes narrowed.
That aura…
It belonged to an ancient divine beast.
And unless he was mistaken, it was…
