Chronicles of Heaven's Chosen - Chapter 69
Yuan Yao sauntered through the streets, buying all manner of food.
Along the way, she attracted the attention of quite a few people with wicked intentions.
Just as she was about to buy some roasted bird eggs, she seemed to sense something. She spun around and looked sharply in a certain direction.
A white figure flashed across the second-floor balcony of a restaurant in the distance, then vanished without a trace.
Yuan Yao frowned slightly.
“Miss, how many roasted bird eggs would you like?” the vendor suddenly asked, breaking her train of thought.
She drew back her gaze and smiled brightly at him. “One hundred!”
The vendor stared at her. “Young lady, can you finish that many?”
“I’m not the only one eating them.”
The vendor smiled. His gaze drifted involuntarily over the precious objects adorning her, and something dark flickered in his eyes.
He packed the freshly roasted bird eggs into paper bags and handed them over. Yuan Yao accepted the bags and placed the still-steaming eggs in her storage space.
After paying, she headed toward a candied hawthorn stall nearby.
During that time, more and more greedy gazes fell upon her. It was broad daylight, however, and no one dared to make a move too hastily.
In their eyes, Yuan Yao was surely the carefree young heiress of some wealthy clan—and she did not even have a single attendant guarding her.
Yuan Yao carried on as if she had noticed nothing.
After buying every item on her list, she began making her way toward the alley.
But then—
“Miss?”
A melodious voice came from behind her.
Yuan Yao turned and found a tall young man standing there. Dressed in a pale-purple brocade robe, he was exceptionally handsome, with alluring peach-blossom eyes, a high nose, and thin lips. A tiny red beauty mark sat near one corner of his mouth, so faint that it could only be seen from close by.
He raised one hand. A pale-green bracelet rested on his palm.
“Miss, did you drop this?”
Yuan Yao took one look and shook her head.
“It isn’t mine.”
With that, she turned to leave.
Unexpectedly, he stepped forward until he was almost directly behind her. In a gentle voice, he cautioned, “Miss, many people have set their sights on the valuables you’re wearing. You must be care—”
Before he could finish, Yuan Yao sprang several feet forward. She whirled around, a riotously colorful sword appearing in her hand and pointing straight at the man in purple.
“Don’t come any closer!” she cried, fear written across her face.
The man froze. Before he could explain, Yuan Yao turned and fled at top speed, her many ornaments clanking and jingling against one another.
The people harboring wicked intentions witnessed the entire scene.
They secretly followed.
As if blinded by panic, Yuan Yao ran straight into the alley.
She pressed her back against the wall and panted for breath.
At that moment, a throwing dart shot toward her throat.
Her pupils contracted. She clutched her head and dropped into a crouch. Several more hidden weapons came flying, and she dodged them one after another.
“Don’t kill me! Please don’t kill me!” Yuan Yao screamed in terror as she continued to evade every attack.
Two burly men with black cloths covering their faces suddenly appeared, sabers in hand. Without hesitation, they swung their blades at her, plainly intending to kill her on the spot.
“Stay away!”
Yuan Yao’s beautiful face was full of fright. Gripping her colorful sword in both hands, she assumed a defensive stance and retreated one step at a time.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
Two concealed weapons flew at the saber-wielding men. They immediately raised their weapons to block.
Yuan Yao turned and ran deeper into the alley.
“Don’t let her escape!”
More and more people poured in from both ends of the alley and launched their attacks.
“You damned woman! If you dare parade your wealth around like that, you can die for it today!”
“Ah!”
Yuan Yao let out a short scream of terror.
The ghost-masked youth who had followed her happened to witness the scene, and the corner of his mouth twitched once more.
Just what game was she playing?
He stood atop one of the alley walls, watching the panic-stricken girl below with open amusement. Yet he also caught the tiny smile she tried to hide.
The ghost-masked youth clicked his tongue.
At last, Yuan Yao was forced to the very end of the alley—a dead end. She turned around in apparent panic and swallowed nervously.
Struggling to maintain her composure, she asked, “What do you want?”
“Hand over everything valuable on you!” a fat man with fleshy ears sneered.
Yuan Yao’s gaze swept over everyone now gathered inside the alley.
There were roughly twenty of them.
The corners of her lips began to rise. She was just about to speak when something unexpected happened.
Blood sprayed through the air.
Nine people had their throats sealed by sword energy before they could utter so much as a scream.
“Who is it?!” someone shouted.
The newcomer was the handsome young man in the pale-purple brocade robe. Holding a flexible sword, he approached at an unhurried pace.
“You needn’t be afraid, miss.”
Yuan Yao fell silent.
The remaining attackers’ expressions changed. As though by tacit agreement, they all charged at the young man.
They had grossly underestimated his strength.
One person after another fell. Panic finally took hold of the survivors.
Just as they turned to flee, they stumbled into a Gravity Formation. Before they could react, the crushing force drove them to their knees.
The young man was startled as well. Although the Gravity Formation had little effect on him, it made him realize what had happened. He looked up at Yuan Yao.
She pointed at him, cheeks puffed out in annoyance. “You. Come out.”
There had been more than twenty people, and he had killed so many that only seven remained.
Yuan Yao knew he had only meant to save her, so she decided not to hold it against him.
【Target Wu Liuyun’s Awakening Value has reached 3.】
System 250’s voice rang out.
The handsome young man was Wu Liuyun.
Realizing that he had ruined her plans, Wu Liuyun gave her an apologetic smile and quickly stepped out of the Gravity Formation.
The seven survivors tried to rush out after him. At that exact moment, however, the formation’s gravity abruptly intensified, pinning them so firmly that they could no longer move.
【Target Xie Yan’s Awakening Value has reached -95.】
Yuan Yao’s head snapped up, her eyes searching for Xie Yan.
Sure enough, the white-robed youth stood atop a wall not far away, the ghost mask still covering his face.
Their gazes met.
Wu Liuyun followed her line of sight and saw Xie Yan as well. His expression shifted subtly, and vigilance rose in his heart.
He could sense that the youth was dangerous.
Xie Yan did not spare Wu Liuyun a single glance. He stared down at Yuan Yao and drawled teasingly, “Little trash, your scream is pretty awful.”
Embarrassment washed over Yuan Yao, but none of it showed on her face. She replied coldly, “Dog Xie, do you think your voice sounds good?”
