Chapter 4

The candlelight in the hall flickered faintly. I had been a little nervous, but when I heard those words, I somehow relaxed.

I pressed my lips together and began to study my new husband in earnest.

He was dressed in a bright red wedding robe, with handsome, flirtatious features and a smile playing on his thin lips.

He was very tall, yet he stood without the slightest proper bearing, and the things he said were even more unexpected.

But no matter how I looked, I couldn’t find a single wound on him.

Perhaps sensing what I was thinking, Pei Changfeng’s gaze drifted for a moment. Then he cleared his throat, walked over to the table, and sat down with one leg crossed over the other. “All right, I won’t tease you anymore.”

“Still, your luck really is terrible. Prince Jing is such a good man, and so deeply devoted to you. How did you end up marrying me instead? My imperial brother, honestly. To think he lost his head over a woman.”

He must have been exceptionally good with words.

I had barely opened my mouth, yet he had already rattled off one sentence after another.

And so I learned that he had originally refused to marry me, but Pei Lin had insisted on his own way and had even given him his most treasured red-maned stallion. Pei Changfeng had coveted that horse for a long time, and in the end, half-pushed and half-willing, he agreed.

And Pei Lin had done all of this merely because of a few tears from Consort Shu.

When he finished, Pei Changfeng took a sip of tea.

“By the way, what exactly is going on between you and Prince Jing? That man is cold as ice. This is the first time I’ve ever seen him act like this.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.”

Pei Changfeng looked at me suspiciously.

But I truly had nothing to say. The Empress Dowager said Prince Jing was deeply in love with me, but in truth, we had only traveled together for a short stretch on the way back to the capital.

We had barely exchanged more than a few words.

That night, Pei Changfeng slept on the floor.

He said, “It’s our first time meeting. I can’t very well take advantage of you right away.”

I had grown up in Medicine King Valley since I was little. The Valley Master was old and taciturn, and for those thirteen years, only medicinal herbs and the chirping of insects kept me company. Over time, I had also become poor with words. This was the first time anyone had ever spoken so much to me.

I froze for a moment.

“Then I’ll trouble you to sleep here tonight. Tomorrow, I can take your place.”

At that, Pei Changfeng pillowed his hands behind his head and glanced sideways at me. “I’m not doing this for you. I’ve never liked sleeping on beds since I was a child. I prefer sleeping on the floor.”

I was left speechless.

I never would have imagined that someone of such noble imperial blood would have such a strange habit.
