Chapter 171

“You recognize me?”

Gu Huaiwei was currently posing as her sister.

Seeing the tears in the eyes of the plump, middle-aged woman standing before her, she couldn’t help but think that no matter which dimension her sister went to, she truly left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

“Of course I recognize you. I could never forget this face.”

Sister Yu’s fleshy hand gripped Gu Huaiwei’s. Her palm was covered in cold sweat, feeling damp and clammy, like a wet wipe that had been left out too long in humid weather.

Gu Huaiwei found the sensation unpleasant, but out of politeness, she didn’t pull her hand away by force.

Sister Yu, however, was overcome with genuine emotion. “Miss Gu, the allies who went to investigate already told me,” she said, her voice thick with feeling. “It’s truly a shame that you’ve forgotten so much of the past.

“It doesn’t matter. Once the Baptism is over, I’ll stay by your side and slowly help you remember everything. Everything here still bears the traces of your presence. Without you, the Dawn Alliance wouldn’t be what it is today.”

“Thank you for remembering me.” Gu Huaiwei finally managed to pull her hand back. She reached into her pocket, took out a napkin, and handed it to the woman to wipe her tears.

Sister Yu clutched the napkin, her eyes shimmering. “You’re still as caring as you used to be.”

Gu Huaiwei offered a small smile.

It was all she could do.

Lu Beijiu watched from the side, his gaze more discerning.

He could see things more clearly. This girl before him shared the same face as Gu Changge, but she seemed to lack Gu Changge’s soul. Were they truly the same person?

What Lu Beijiu held onto were memories of the past. If the person in front of him had lost those memories, then she was no longer the person he once knew.

“What was I like in the past?” Gu Huaiwei played along with Sister Yu’s assumption of amnesia, trying to stall for time.

She was far more pragmatic than they realized.

Handing over the napkin hadn’t been an act of care; it was because Sister Yu’s hand was too sticky.

Asking about the past wasn’t because she wanted to reminisce about beautiful memories; it was a stalling tactic.

Watching Gu Huaiwei act this way, Lu Beijiu found it impossible to see her as Gu Changge.

Gu Changge possessed a certain warmth that could touch people’s hearts.

That was something Gu Huaiwei lacked.

“You used to be our hope.” Sister Yu wasn’t as sharp as Lu Beijiu. As she recalled the past, the folds of fat on her face smoothed out, and her tone became exceptionally gentle. “It was you who discovered this abandoned Nuclear Submarine base. You provided the underwater construction technology, and you gave us the technology for the Baptism, allowing us to find reliable partners.”

Gu Changge’s prestige within the Dawn Alliance seemed to be immense. Whenever her sister was mentioned, their eyes filled with admiration and faith.

Underwater construction technology, Baptism technology… Gu Huaiwei pondered her sister’s capabilities. These technologies were likely things her sister had brought over from other dimensions.

Sister Yu’s words brought back memories for Lu Beijiu as well, but he remained more rational. Since Gu Huaiwei hadn’t undergone the Baptism yet, he didn’t want to say too much.

He reminded her, “Sister Yu, let’s proceed with the Baptism first. Once it’s finished, we can sit down, pour some wine, and have a proper heart-to-heart.”

There was only a fine line between a “Baptism” and a brainwashing.

Gu Huaiwei’s primary goal was to stall for time, giving Lin She enough of a window to steal the data.

“Wait a moment.”

Her dark, grape-like eyes flickered behind her glasses as a clever excuse came to mind. Her expression brightened suddenly, and she turned her head toward Lu Beijiu.

“Mr. Lu, before the Baptism, I just remembered something you promised me before.”

For a moment, Lu Beijiu couldn’t recall what she was talking about.

He asked, “What are you referring to…?”
Gu Huaiwei clasped her hands together and looked at him expectantly. “Zhou Chuanning’s Bonding partner looks seventy percent like you. Are you twin brothers? You promised me back then that you’d give me an answer once I reached the Dawn Alliance.”

“About that…” Lu Beijiu looked up and rubbed his chin, remembering that he had indeed said those words.

However, Lu Beijiu felt that now was not the right time.

He corrected her, “Miss Gu, what I said was that I would tell you after we became colleagues.”

“Eh? Is this a lack of trust?” Gu Huaiwei lowered her lashes, her voice tinged with the sadness of being suspected, though her eyes remained perfectly clear.

“You’re interested in my past, and I’m just as interested in yours.”

Gu Huaiwei placed a hand over her heart and began her performance.

“Even after I lost my memory, we’ve known each other for some time now. I thought we had already developed a certain level of rapport, enough to share some heartfelt words. You call me by my name, and I’m willing to let you get to know me. Human hearts are mutual. Is it possible that you aren’t willing to let me understand your past?”

Gu Huaiwei was a good actress.

She was playing the role of a passionate and sensitive person.

“That’s not what I meant, it’s just…” Lu Beijiu paused, his tone helpless.

“If that’s not it, then tell me.” Gu Huaiwei took advantage of the moment to step closer.

She touched her own face, her tone shifting from sadness to a smile, the corners of her lips curving up lightly.

“If I really do recover my previous memories, and then I remember your suspicion of me at this moment, I’ll be heartbroken.”

“…” Lu Beijiu was somewhat unaccustomed to Gu Huaiwei’s sudden change in tone.

Most of the time, she carried herself with a hypocritical politeness.

That face of a shrewd, pseudo-enthusiastic merchant suited her much better.

“Lu Beijiu, do you have the heart to make me sad?” Gu Huaiwei softly called his name, pretending to wipe away a non-existent tear from the corner of her eye. “We’re at the bottom of the sea-where could I possibly go? Besides, if I really wanted to cut ties with my past, I wouldn’t have followed you here.”

Lu Beijiu looked at her for a moment before finally turning his head in compromise. “Sister Yu, would it be convenient for you to step away for a moment?”

Sister Yu, watching this scene unfold, suddenly burst into laughter.

She crossed her arms and looked at the troubled Lu Beijiu. With a slight arch of her brow and the flesh on her face trembling as she spoke, she said, “Little Lu, you might as well just give in. Even if Gu Changge has lost her memory, you still have no way of refusing her.”

“Yes, yes, yes.” Lu Beijiu surrendered. “Sister Yu, please stop teasing me.”

“Alright, alright, I’ll stop.” Sister Yu raised an eyebrow and smiled, patting his shoulder. “You two talk. Call me when you’re finished.”

Sister Yu walked into the inner room, giving them some space to chat.

Lu Beijiu let the words brew in his mind for a moment before he finally spoke.

“If you really are her, and you’ve lost your memories, then this face of mine… was actually given to me by you.”

Lu Beijiu felt conflicted.

Before Gu Huaiwei remembered the past, he was actually quite reluctant to equate her with the Gu Changge in his memories.

Gu Huaiwei remained calm on the surface, but her heart was filled with endless amazement.

Sister Changge could even give someone else a face? That’s insane.

Gu Huaiwei was already used to her sister’s various feats.

The more Gu Huaiwei saw in these small Dimensions, the more she looked forward to meeting her sister again.

Sister Changge had been through so many Dimensions-she must have amassed terrifying strength by now. If Gu Huaiwei could grow too, then the two of them, as sisters, would surely have a chance to make it out of Paradise in one piece.
