Chapter 210

In the end, the man traded fifty days of his Lifespan to Gu Huaiwei for a new wheelchair.

Lifespan was recorded on Yellow Paper.

A Trial-taker would use their heart’s blood to write the amount of life they wished to trade onto the special Yellow Paper and then gift it to another to complete the transaction.

The recipient only needed to burn the Yellow Paper to obtain that Lifespan.

Having received her payment, Gu Huaiwei pulled a wheelchair out of her Jadeite Space. She lifted the man into it so he could push the wheels and move forward on his own.

She helped him leave the incorrect Mine Tunnel.

The man looked down at his empty pant legs, his voice raspy. “Aren’t you going to help me leave the Instance?”

“Your Lifespan was only enough to buy this wheelchair.” Gu Huaiwei smiled and patted the armrest. “Transaction complete. It was a pleasure doing business with you.”

As for whether he could actually escape the Instance, that would depend on his own luck.

Gu Huaiwei could not help beyond what was paid for.

The man pushed the wheels with trembling hands, moving forward with great difficulty.

Inside the pitch-black Mine Tunnel, the sound of the wheelchair grinding over gravel echoed.

The man’s figure gradually vanished into the thick darkness.

Gu Huaiwei then wandered through the other tunnels.

Like a hunter scenting blood, she searched for Trial-takers who still had a glimmer of hope. She offered them small favors and lined her own pockets with the Lifespan she earned.

When the time was right, Gu Huaiwei followed the Red Blood Line through the darkness to return the way she had come.

When she reappeared at the entrance of the Mine Tunnel, she held a thick stack of Yellow Paper in her hand.

Seeing Gu Huaiwei emerge, Bai Yuzhen rushed over to meet her, her expression filled with anxiety. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” Gu Huaiwei said, patting the thick stack of Yellow Paper. “I didn’t see any Anomalies, just some heavily contaminated humans. They couldn’t leave the Instance and didn’t have much value as customers, so I just earned a few notes and left.”

Bai Yuzhen stared at the stack of Yellow Paper, stunned.

Her lips parted, her dark, bright eyes filled with disbelief. “You earned all this in just that short amount of time?”

“Yes.” Gu Huaiwei blinked, her tone light. “Since I was already here, I figured I’d make a little extra on the side. Isn’t that killing two birds with one stone?”

Bai Yuzhen opened her mouth to speak but forced herself to swallow her words.

Finally, she could only mutter, “You really are…”

Gu Huaiwei noticed Bai Yuzhen’s sudden excitement and asked, “I’m what?”

Bai Yuzhen had originally wanted to say “terrifying.”

But the word changed to something softer as it reached her lips.

“You’re really… um… a reliable companion.” Bai Yuzhen smoothed over her words.

Choosing Gu Huaiwei made Bai Yuzhen feel like she had bet on the right person.

Gu Huaiwei gave a light chuckle. She pulled two sheets from the thick stack of Yellow Paper, held them between her fingers, and held them out to Bai Yuzhen.

Bai Yuzhen froze. “This is?”

“A reward for choosing me with your eyes closed.”

Bai Yuzhen’s eyes lit up. She quickly reached out to take them, her voice brimming with irrepressible joy. “Thank you, Shopkeeper Gu!”

Because of the Lifespan Gu Huaiwei had given her, Bai Yuzhen became much more enthusiastic toward her.

Along the way, Bai Yuzhen told Gu Huaiwei many things about the world outside the Instance.

Gu Huaiwei gathered quite a bit of intelligence from her.

The two eventually arrived at the Miner’s Canteen.

It was the first time Gu Huaiwei had seen so many Anomalies.

Inside the vast Mine Tunnel, three types of Miners were eating.

They wore Yellow Hard Hats, White Hard Hats, and Red Hard Hats respectively.

Certain parts of these Miners’ bodies were abnormally swollen.

They were all infected with Mist Lung Disease.

Each Miner sat with their head down, holding a Meal Box.

Inside the boxes was mostly rotten food.

He Xueyi did not like Instances. They were permeated with the scent of death, and his meticulously cultivated Red Fruit could not take root and sprout in the bodies of the dead.

Bai Yuzhen was eager to prove her worth.

“Shopkeeper Gu, you stay here. This part is simple and doesn’t require you to lift a finger. I’ll handle the rest.”

“Mhm, you go ahead.” Gu Huaiwei had her own business to attend to.

Following the guidance of the Rules, Bai Yuzhen searched through the crowd of Yellow Hard Hats for a couple who didn’t have a Meal Box. She handed them one and received a new map in return.

Gu Huaiwei didn’t need to follow the Rules.

But Bai Yuzhen did.

She had to complete a series of tasks as written in the Rules to obtain the relevant clues within the Instance.

While Bai Yuzhen was delivering the meal boxes, Gu Huaiwei went from table to table handing out flyers for the Oasis Sanatorium.

“Take a look, have a gander! Our Sanatorium has launched a new Anomaly Custom Meal plan. It’s all-you-can-eat and included in the basic room rate at no extra charge.”

“If you’re tired of the day-in, day-out grind of the Instance and want a peaceful vacation, the Oasis Sanatorium is definitely your best choice.”

The numb, ghostly Miners looked up.

A few were actually attracted by the advertisement. They held the flyers and huddled together, discussing the prices in the clicking, raspy language of Anomalies.

Gu Huaiwei couldn’t understand them.

She needed a translator.

Bai Yuzhen returned quickly with the new map, her expression grave.

“Shopkeeper Gu, the Rules say we need to watch out for people not wearing hard hats. Those people are Bandit Overseers hired by the Black-hearted Merchant…”

Before Bai Yuzhen could finish, a deafening explosion echoed from deep within the Mine Tunnel.

The sound was like rolling thunder, mixed with the roar of collapsing rock.

The entire cave trembled.

Gu Huaiwei looked up immediately, feeling a wave of scorching heat surge through the passage.

Debris fell from the ceiling like rain, and the air became thick with the pungent smell of gunpowder.

Shrill screams rang out.

“A cave-in! Help!”

“They… they’ve blown up the entrance to the Mine Tunnel!”
