Chapter 227

At the entrance of Gray Mist Town Library, a spectacle rare enough to be seen only once in a century had appeared.

It was a foggy morning, the damp air carrying a thread of chill. A cold wind swept fallen leaves across the ground, no different from any other day. The only difference was that the Library entrance was much livelier than usual.

The Library Director, looking as though misfortune had been painted across his face, sat sickly in a wheelchair with his whole family in tow. Behind him stood his biological son, Han Zhusheng, dressed in a Zhongshan suit and clearly hoping his father would hurry up and reincarnate, as well as the Female Painter, who only pretended to be on good terms with him while waiting for him to die so she could experience heart-piercing grief and create art from the pain.

Not far away, the female classmate Han Zhusheng had casually brought out with him was still dripping blood from her throat. She held a pair of scissors and hid in the shadows.

Gu Huaiwei held four Contract documents signed with Anomaly.

From the Library Instance, every Anomaly that was even remotely presentable had been led out by her, except for Bella, who had vanished during this round of Samsara.

Gu Huaiwei did not need Anomaly to help her clear the Instance, nor did she need their protection. She paid a certain amount of Lifespan as the price, then earned even more Lifespan from these Anomalies in return.

On the other side, Qin Yuhuan was pushing her husband, Zhang Wenwu, in a wheelchair.

When she saw Gu Huaiwei maneuvering among the Anomaly, she forced a friendly smile at her to hide the unease in her heart.

Lu Xiaoxing, meanwhile, wanted nothing more than to flee in the Daily Newspaper Office’s vehicle.

Gu Huaiwei removed every wheel from the Fire Truck and the Daily Newspaper Office’s vehicle, then invited them all onto her own Apocalypse Armored Vehicle.

This trip had been a full haul.

Oasis Sanatorium.

[Oasis Sanatorium: Two-star]

[Paid unlocked areas: Trauma Treatment Room, Intermediate Recovery Room, Intermediate Nursing Service, Special Dietary Service.]

[Current resident customers in the Sanatorium:

Human: 11→14→17

Non-human: 1→4→8]

[Phase Two Customer Acquisition Mission:

Total new customers (13/20)

Non-human (7/5)]

[Remaining Lifespan: 14,736 days.]

Oasis Sanatorium only needed seven more ordinary human customers to complete the second phase of its customer acquisition mission and upgrade from Two-star to Three-star.

In the Mine Instance, Bai Yuzhen was still anxiously waiting for Gu Huaiwei to return.

“Shop Manager Miss, our Sanatorium is short on caregivers. A customer with a broken foot is making a fuss. He doesn’t want a male caregiver, only a female one.” He Xueyi liked young, pretty humans and hated dealing with smelly, half-crippled customers.

He had shoved the work of caring for patients onto Lin She, which meant Lin She had not had the energy these past two days to attract more customers to the Safe House.

The customer with the broken foot was Zhao Lianxin’s husband. He had previously tried to hit on Gu Huaiwei, and Gu Huaiwei had ignored him.

“I’ll go take a look.”

Gu Huaiwei headed to the Basic Care Room, with He Xueyi and Bai Miemie following on her left and right.

Zhao Lianxin’s husband was called Xiao Wu. At this very moment, Lin She had tied him to a treatment chair in the Basic Care Room, and he was screaming as though his heart and lungs were being torn apart.

When he saw Gu Huaiwei arrive, he complained with a sour face, “Shopkeeper Gu, you’ve finally decided to show yourself? My wife spent so much Lifespan to let me stay here, and this is the service you provide me?”

Gu Huaiwei saw that his foot was already more flexible than before. Her smile did not reach her eyes. “Dear customer, if there’s anything you’re dissatisfied with, you may bring it up.”

He Xueyi took out the complaint registration form and a pen that had run out of ink long ago but could still be used for appearances, then began working.

“I want to file a complaint against this male caregiver of yours. He walks around with a long face all day, and his skin is as pale as a dead man’s. It makes me feel terrible!” Xiao Wu’s body was tied up, so he could only jut his mouth in Lin She’s direction. “Also, he’s too violent! When he gives injections, he just stabs them in. When he feeds me medicine, he just shoves it into my mouth. The moment I have any objections, he ties me up. Is this how you care for patients? This is clearly abuse!”
Lin She wore a white face mask, a syringe still in his hand. The needle gleamed coldly as he stared at the uncooperative Xiao Wu, seemingly baffled by his current behavior.

“I’m treating you.”

“You’re clearly trying to kill me!” Xiao Wu roared at him.

As the number of disabled customers in the shop increased, it was indeed no longer suitable to have Lin She and the others serve as caregivers.

Gu Huaiwei asked, “What kind of caregiver do you want?”

Seeing that Gu Huaiwei seemed inclined to compromise, Xiao Wu let his lecherous gaze linger over her body, then said with a sleazy smile, “At the very least, she needs to have your kind of vibe. Then she should wear one of those nurse uniforms, speak in a sweet voice, be gentle, and treat patients with the warmth of a spring breeze…”

As he spoke, Xiao Wu’s gaze landed on Gu Huaiwei’s face again. The corner of his mouth twitched, and he commented with a hint of disdain, “But I don’t want a glasses girl. And those blunt bangs of yours are way too old-fashioned. They’re covering your eyes. You barely wear any makeup either. That’s not respectful enough toward the customers at all. You have to understand, makeup is a form of etiquette…”

“Also, your shop charges way too much. Why do some medicines cost extra? You’re a Sanatorium. It’s only right and proper for you to cure us sick people. If you charge extra on top of that, then the nature of this place changes.”

He went on and on, proclaiming his dissatisfaction.

He had mistaken Gu Huaiwei for someone as good-tempered as Zhao Lianxin, thinking that no matter what he said, she would tolerate him.

Gu Huaiwei took the syringe from Lin She’s hand.

“I see. Then I’ll make some changes. Don’t worry. At the very least, I’m very gentle.”

Her tone was mild as she swept her bangs aside, revealing a smooth forehead, then took off her glasses. Without them, her upturned eyes were exposed, wild and catlike.

Combined with the special charm boost from the last Dimension settlement, Xiao Wu stared into her eyes and couldn’t look away.

She walked toward him.

He didn’t move at all, like a little white mouse frozen in place.

Then Gu Huaiwei smiled and drove the thick, long needle straight into Xiao Wu’s spine.

In one go, she pushed all the medicine in.

“Aaaagh!” In an instant, Xiao Wu let out a pig-slaughtering shriek. “The Black Shop is killing people!”

At the side, Lin She took out a capsule and held it between his fingers, reminding her, “Miss Gu, he should have been given anesthetic first.”

“Oh dear, I forgot.” Gu Huaiwei put her glasses back on, hiding the wicked amusement in her eyes.

She leaned closer to Xiao Wu, admiring the pained expression on his face, then said with a look of regret, “But this customer wanted to save on extra medication. We can’t very well charge him more Lifespan for anesthetic.”

Xiao Wu had already fainted from the pain.

Gu Huaiwei tossed the empty syringe back to Lin She. “If we run into a customer like this again, just satisfy his expectations directly.”

“Should we have Bai Miemie take care of him next time?”

“In his dreams.” Gu Huaiwei glanced at Xiao Wu. “But he was right about one thing. Our shop really does need new caregivers.”

Caregiving was physically demanding work. It required staying up all night, lifting patients, and being able to withstand negative energy, since sick and disabled people often had bad tempers.

Gu Huaiwei planned to recruit some sturdy caregivers in this Dimension.

Or, in the name of Oasis Sanatorium, recruit some Anomaly workers.

“Lin She, make a recruitment ad first. I want both a paper version and a digital version. Once I come back from the Mine Instance, we’ll go recruit caregivers together.”
